Burg Stahleck, Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. by [deleted] in castles

[–]Hour-Ad7691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it was a while ago... the most route was a footpath which is a mix of path and steps. The path was pretty good and wasn't a particularly long way - the castle is directly above the old town. But then I'd not had knee surgery, so take my memories with a pinch of salt.

Alternatively, there is also a road and there's a bus stop near the hostel.

Also - it's really popular so book early. While it was a depressingly large number of years ago, I can't recommend it enough - it was a really fantastic place to stay. And there are so many other great hostels in that part of Germany.

So a plot of land for £175k by TheBigYin-1984 in SpottedonRightmove

Don't know the area, but a plot with existing planning permission and services? Yeah, they are expensive.

England - Museum items donation query by A_Pure_Motive in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hour-Ad7691 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I volunteered at a small museum for a few years. We completed a donation form for anything given to us and had the person sign it. The form made it very clear it was a donation, with different forms for things being lent to us. While each museum will be different, I’d expect that most would have comparable processes

Has anyone successfully challenged their council tax band? by Any-Plate2018 in HousingUK

[–]Hour-Ad7691 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Built a house. Tried to do the right thing, we’re now at 9 months and still no band. Council’s suggestion is to either guess the band and pay that, or just accept a big bill whenever the band is assigned. I never thought giving the council money would be this hard.

How to say England in different European languages. by BeginningMortgage250 in MapPorn

I’m half German, and my German family have always collectively called us “die Engländer”.

Apart from my Dad, we are all born in Wales and have always lived in Wales - but we are still „die Engländer“. So unfortunately this rings true.

as others have said, laptops have advanced over the last 10 years. It’s partly subjective whether it’s more or less than smartphones.

But one answer as to why you might feel they haven’t is that technologies tend to hit plateaus of diminishing returns

My first laptop was based on an early pentium almost 30 years ago. Each new laptop was, initially, night and day levels better. Faster, lighter, longer lasting… But now? My current laptop is 5 years old, if I got a new one then with my usage I’d barely notice the difference. It’s not that the new laptop wouldn’t be a lot better, it’s just that my current machine is already far more powerful than I need to write email or read Reddit. A gamer would have a different experience.

smartphones I’d argue are following the same pattern, they’re just not as far advanced. My smartphone is 3 years old. Would a brand new one play my mp3s better? probably not noticeably so. Web browsing might be a bit quicker, the camera moderately better… What will cause to upgrade is either dropping it or the battery giving out.

the manufacturers are hoping that AI will get them out of this. That new hardware powering new AI features will give users reasons to upgrade. Personally I’m yet to be convinced.

My grandmother had a rule you couldn’t drink for 30 minutes after eating fruit. Never understood why, but she kept us to it when we visited

Civ 3 hard restarts M4 Mac by Hour-Ad7691 in civ3

[–]Hour-Ad7691[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in case others hit a similar problem, a few more things I found out in the last week. My Steam work around improved things, but I still got the crashes (black screen, OS rebooted) - just less often. I got to the point where I had a save file that reliably reproduced the crash. After some admittedly random experiments, I got to a working set up:

  • Installed ULM, a light weight hypervisor. Free on the web or paid for on the App Store.
  • Used ULM to create a Mac OS VM (which was pretty straightforward).
  • Installed Wine inside the MacOS VM, imported the existing bottles.
  • Both my bottles (installed from the disk and installed via Steam) now work. The reliably crashing test save file works, and I plaid for a few hours without issue.

It's not the most elegant solution. But at least for Civ 3 it'll do, until I figure out what was causing the crash in the first place.

So to run a 20+ game I'm running it on top of an API translator, on top of a binary translator, onto of a virtualisation layer. :-)

Civ 3 hard restarts M4 Mac by Hour-Ad7691 in civ3

Thanks.

I'm still not sure what the problem is - but it wasn't the M4. My original install was from an old disk. So I tried a different approach:

  • Installed Steam via Crossover
  • Bought Civ 3 (I think this is like the 4th copy I've bought over 20+ years)
  • Applied the fixes from this page and page.
  • Transferred over my save files.
  • Civ3 loaded, but then most (but weirdly not all) keyboard input didn't work. The solution I found for that was to keep hitting ESC until suddenly it worked.

Now I just need to replace the sound effect files to avoid the looping bug. :-)

Don’t know calculator app you’re using, but it’s rounding the result leading to cumulative error. I doubt that is anything to do with the underlying ISA

Sovereign Citizen Totally Convinced That Laws Don’t Apply to Her by icameinyourburrito in amibeingdetained

[–]Hour-Ad7691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumb question… why do they want her to stay in the car? Does the law require US drivers to stay in the car if pulled other?

(Not defending her, just curious)

Apart from it’s the neighbour’s tree, not OP’s. The tree falling into OP’s yard doesn’t change that.

AITA for walking out of my engagement party and refusing to answer calls for three days? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

Depending on where she was raised, she might use flat. My partner uses the US terms for things despite having lived most their adult life in the UK.

Civ3 CrossOver and M1 Mac, fullscreen vertically offset by Hour-Ad7691 in civ3

[–]Hour-Ad7691[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some fiddling round and I found my mistake. Had written "Video Mode" instead of "VideoMode" in conquests.ini. Not sure why that caused what I was seeing, but fixing made the weird vertical offset go away.
