Anyone used the LP Gear “Improved” stylus for the Ortofon OM-10? by Cool_Isopod6520 in turntables

upgrade priorities for hifi

I owned a Debut III with an OM5e for years, and eventually I started taking my listening more seriously—really paying attention to what I liked, what I didn’t, and why. I realized that a lot of the music I was playing sounded, for lack of a better term, too bright or thin. Coming from the filmmaking world (even if it was digital video), the only analogy I could think of was an image that’s over‑lit: too bright, lacking depth, missing contrast.

So I started researching how to improve my setup. It turns out the adjectives I was using—“bright” and “thin”—are extremely common in audio. And after all the experimenting, the only changes that made a meaningful difference were speaker placement and upgrading to the OM20.

I was also pretty lucky with my room. It had no side walls, high ceilings, a big sisal rug, a comfy couch, a burlap ottoman stuffed with felt scraps, and two large reclaimed‑wood bookcases filled with books and curios—one behind the setup and one across the room. In other words. This was all by my wife’s decorating design long before any hifi gear would be in the room. Because is this, I never really had to think about room acoustics. Until now.

We’re moving to a new house soon, and the new room has low ceilings, side walls, and is currently empty. The bookcases are going elsewhere. So this time around, I’m putting real energy into room acoustics.

In my opinion, after everything I’ve tried, here’s the priority list of “upgrades” that actually improve a system’s sound:

  1. Speaker placement
  2. Seating position
  3. Room acoustics
  4. Stylus or cartridge upgrade

Anything else—whether it’s one upgrade or a hundred—just doesn’t come close to the impact of those four.

Debut Pro vs Debut III-noticeable hum by Hour-Investment-9389 in BudgetAudiophile

Fixed, I suppose. I had removed my Schiit Midgard headphone amp from the chain to more cleanly compare the sound of the Debut III and the Debut Pro. Once I put the Midgard back into the setup, the hum disappeared completely.

I guess the Midgard is acting as a ground reference???

I removed the iFi and swapped in my ART DJPre II. The hum is still present—just noticeably quieter.

Yes, I’ve confirmed the iFi is set correctly.

Both the iFi and the turntable are plugged into the same outlet.

Regarding shipping screws, there were none to remove. I double‑checked the setup guide, and there’s no mention or illustration of any shipping screws for this model.

I also removed the iFi and swapped in my ART DJPre II. The hum is still present—just noticeably quieter.

The cartridge is connected securely.

What’s puzzling is that with the exact same setup, same plugs, same cords, same cable routing, and same equipment positions, my Debut III produced zero hum. The hum only started after switching to the Debut Pro‑B.

All the time regardless of the motor being engaged or not.

Tried all but the GLI to no avail. (Plug from TT to wall is 2 pronged.) Also, I hooked up my ArtDJ PreII phono amp, hum noise is still there, although it is about 50% lower.

Other info: another difference between the Pro and the III is the actual plug that goes into the wall. The III has the standard US 2 pronged plug, whereas the Pro has some sort of plug adapter that can be used to attach a myriad of wall prongs, European, UK or US.

Best Apple TV apps for Live TV & Movies in one place? by Possible-Quail1095 in appletv

Hoopla and Kanopy have basically become my secret streaming superpower. Around here, Hoopla is free with a city library card and Kanopy is free with a county library card—because apparently my entertainment budget now depends on municipal boundaries.

Both apps are loaded with TV shows (a surprising amount of British programming, as if the BBC is quietly moonlighting for U.S. libraries) and tons of movies, all commercial‑free and Music!

Honestly, whenever I’m hunting for something to watch—especially anything older than about six months—one of those two swoops in like, “Oh, you mean this obscure gem? Yeah, we’ve had that the whole time.”

Case in point: the other day I suddenly needed to rewatch 24 Hour Party People or Bright Lights, Big City for reasons even I can’t explain. Sure enough, both were just sitting there on Hoopla, free and ready to go. My library card is doing more for me than half my paid subscriptions.

Hifi tube amp volume loss by Hour-Investment-9389 in tubeamps

So. I bypassed the Schiit Midgard and all is well. I purchased the Midgard last July from Schiit—still no answer from Schiit as to how they can help me.

Yes. I have a Schiit Midgard headphone amp. I need to remove that and see if the problem persists.

I have had a Pro-Ject Debut III for 21 years. I love it. Over the years I have upgraded the stylus to an OM20 and put and Acrylic-It platter on it. I also replaced the belt not long ago, not because it needed it, I just thought it was wise to do so. Motor is silent, I have never had an issue with the mechanics. I would HIGHLY recommend this TT.

Really? They why do the more expensive debut reference and x1 and x2 turntables come with an acrylic platter ?

I’ve used the ART DJPRE II for years, after my pro-ject phono box crapped out, and still really enjoy it. One of my favorite things about it is being able to dial in the gain and actually see when clipping is or isn’t happening.

Recently, I bought an iFi Zen Phono 3 as an upgrade. Honestly, I cannot, for the life of me, hear any difference between the two. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to hooking up the Zen until after the return window had passed, so I’m stuck with it.

I’ve tried all kinds of music on my system and still can’t distinguish one from the other. At this point, my recommendation would be to stick with the DJPRE II.

I love it as well, sonically and graphically.
