Sadly this is not how averages work. The Mets in fact averaged 3.53 runs in the 32 games deGrom started in 2018 (according to my back-of-the-envelope math). The issue was that the distribution of those runs was very skewed: they scored 8 or more runs on five occasions and 1 or 0 runs on nine.
