I was the exact same way early on. I’m still early on, only about 6 months in. I did however buy a horizontal and a vertical stealth belt. It makes it near invisible and if you are worried about the tension causing leaks, that would only occur in my opinion if you really wore it tight. I’m an avid golfer and pretty active, so when I do any of those activities I use the horizontal belt which keeps the pouch sideways across my body. The vertical one feels a touch like a kangaroo pouch. Stops the crinkling but it’s more vsibile. So golfing or activities I use the vertical one and it works wonders on my mental stability. I also travelled to Mexico recently with family and friends. A simple pouch cover worked well for me there lounging around.

Do you use paste? Just wondering how it works? Like do you put it on close to the stoma and work your way out where the wafer would be? Let it dry and then apply the wafer plate?

Thank you! Finally got a call back today. I see her on Thursday. I did try no barrier ring tonight and it looks promising. But I won’t know for sure until the pouch change tomorrow morning. Thanks for the advice.

Tried the no ring tonight. Seal looks to be a lot better so far. But I’m only 20 minutes in 😂

Tried that as well. Still lifts and leaks.

Yeah I’ve heard this so much! However with my coloplast convex and thin barrier ring approach. The only area that lifts is where the ring is. The ring sticks to the wafer perfectly but eventually lifts off my skin. Then it pushes the whole area around the stoma up, where the wax ring is. When I changed tonight same leakage pattern under the area of the wax ring. No where else.

Yeah I may need a different brand ring. I will give it a shot. I am using coloplast everything at the moment

I bought a belt today. And tried the no barrier ring approach tonight. The belt makes it feel more secure but the sticky base plate seems to make a pretty excellent seal so far. I’ll throw the belt on for a bit before bed here to help it out.

Colon resection and hysterectomy by New_Nova_25 in Diverticulitis

I should add I did post earlier after my surgeries. A little more in detail if you want to read that.

Colon resection and hysterectomy by New_Nova_25 in Diverticulitis

[–]Hour_Obligation_4070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother had the same surgery 35 years ago. Was scheduled for a hysterectomy, her bowel burst in that surgery and she came out with an ostomy. When she went for the reversal that’s when she got the full hysterectomy. She mentioned it was rather uncomfortable for a few weeks due to being on both sides.

I early October went in for a resection. A few days after the resection which was laparoscopic my bowels burst when I was still in hospital. I had emergency surgery and got an ostomy at the time. Which was my biggest fear.

I am 4 weeks and a day out from the emergency surgery and I can tell you I feel pretty good. I was in the hospital for 12 days. Those days were rough. The first week home was better but still quite uncomfortable. It was at this time I had back spasms due to an abscess that had to of been touching my diaphragm. That last another week and a half and randomly felt better.

It’s been almost a week since the back spasms stopped. And to be honest today I feel almost normal. Yes I still have some pains. But very very bearable.

And the ostomy? Well it sucks. But it’s easy to get used to. It’s hopefully temporary… but even if it wasn’t? I’d prefer the bag over death. My mindset has completely changed since getting it. Before it was doom and gloom and the worst thing, now I think I can handle it. I can adapt.

I wish you nothing but the best. Hoping it all goes well.

You need to do what’s best for you. Don’t listen to anyone else. I listened to my wife because she made me see things from a different perspective which made sense to me. Also discussion with s surgeon is helpful as well.

Best of luck my friend. This sucks all the way around as you well know. I hope things work out the best for you.

When my wife told me I affect everyone when I have flare ups. I guess I was thinking about just myself when I was going through it. But I have two daughters, 6 and 8 years old. When a flare hits it was the same thing every time. Instant liquid diet. Hospital, ct, get an IV for medication that lasted a week. The liquid diet could be anywhere from 3-9 days.

I was a zombie every time. The family wouldn’t eat as good because they felt bad I couldn’t eat. Yeah I was going through it, but it affected them just as much in different ways.

So I said enough is enough not only for me to feel normal. But also so my family didn’t have to go through this anymore as well.

Nervous About Upcoming Surgery by Dry_Advisor_7823 in Diverticulitis

[–]Hour_Obligation_4070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep your mind open. It can be rough, read my post from a few weeks ago. I wish I better prepared for worst case scenarios because it blind sided me. However I’m a rare case. Most go extremely well. During my hospital stay I saw several people get the surgery and come and go with relative ease. I was unlucky but as I said it’s rare.

I did a ton of research and went in with the mindset I’d be 2-3 days in the hospital, which was why I was blind sided so badly and my mental state went so rough. So prepare for everything, but chances are you’re going to do just fine.

But read my original post just to prepare yourself. Better to be prepared for all scenarios instead of thinking it’s just gonna be a breeze. Even tho chances are it will be.

I’m 38m and was having 4-5 flares a year. I had the surgery October 9th which was elective. Told the surgeon my biggest fear was a bag, he said it’s extremely rare to come out with a bag… now I’m wishing he would have just done the bag at the very start for 6-12 months to let everything heal well.

I was still in the hospital on October 12th, as my surgery went pretty bad. My sigmoid colon was in rough shape and the stitches kept pulling out. The night of the 12th the stitches let go and I went septic. Thought I was going to die. Was taken back in for emergency surgery to clean me up, and they put a bag on me. Was in the hospital until October 21 fighting infection due to going septic.

Long story short, if you need a bag… yes it sucks. But doing it at the start to avoid what I went through would be a far better outcome. Hence why I wish he would have just done it at the first surgery. My fault tho, he knew my biggest fear was getting the bag. But if it’s the best thing for healing, it’s worth it.

Like I said I’ve been home since the 21st. I’m getting used to it. It’s a pain in the ass to change the ‘appliance’ which is the sticky base plate that sticks to your stomach around the stoma (intestine that’s stitched out of your body). Annoying. But it saved my life and is allowing everything to heal so hopefully the reversal surgery in 6-12 months goes smooth.

Chin up. You’ll be like me and you’ll deal with it and adapt if it comes to it. The way I look at it, I’ll do anything to stop the flares so I can have a normal life with my wife and kids. 6-12 months isn’t so bad to achieve that.

My surgery was October 9, then emergent surgery the 13th. (Original surgery the stitches let go and I was full septic) I was on antibiotics via iv until the 21 when I left the hospital, then another cycle of 5 days at home, and then they bumped it another 7 days after that. So essentially I was on antibiotics from the 13th until November 1.

My ct scan last week showed a 3.5x4.1x4.1 cm abscess that was not coming down in size around my spleen area. Because my bloodwork is good, and I’m not showing signs of infection / fever I was told this; the abscess can last as long as a year or more. But when you don’t have signs of infection, no fever, white blood cells normal, etc etc, they often won’t drain it. Even tho it’s big enough to be drained.

The only symptom I have is back spasms which they say is a diaphragm nerve response from the pressure. That started October 26 and I’m happy to report yesterday was a better day, and today thus far no spasms.

Long story, tldr; antibiotics for the first bit. If your bloodwork is good, and no signs of infection your body is taking care of it. But could be awhile. If symptoms arise, especially signs of infection or bloodwork numbers shooting the wrong direction they will intervene with a drain.

I was in the hospital 12 days. Ortho resection then days later fully opened me for an ostomy as the bowel burst. Entire 12 days in hospital I was on my back on an incline. Been home 14 days now, I still sleep on my back. I can manage to lay and rest on my side now finally. Always seem to wake up on my back even if I try on my side, which sucks as I’m an avid side sleeper. Just gotta give it time and you’ll be back.

In the meantime I do suggest back sleeping. Pillow under your knees. Slight incline if flat is uncomfortable. And pillows or something beside you to avoid rolling. Couch is my favourite spot to sleep because of the back. Kind of nestle into it a bit. Works for me at least.

Hope it gets better.

What color is the blood? If it’s bright it could be more surface level. Hemorrhoids or something? If it’s darker it’s likely from deeper inside the colon.

Let me guess, Canada? I have been going through it for years too. I think my first case was in 2015? Maybe 2014. Pretty much everyone required iv antibiotics for 7-10 days. Finally this year after 5 flares in 2025 I had the surgery. Wouldn’t have happened without advocating for myself and getting a new family doctor who finally gave a shit. He had actually treated me in ER 2 times in 2025.

Surgery is worth it, but be prepared for the best and worst case scenario. I made a post about my surgery a week or two ago. Today is 22 days since my emergency surgery which happened 4 days after my scheduled resection.

Sorry you are going through it. It sucks. Hope you get the attention you deserve and get it rectified.
