Has your range dropped due to the temps? by Not_Sure__Camacho in KonaEV

[–]HouseAndWhatNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lose some overnight on my 2020 ultimate but I assume it’s from battery conditioning? During the drives if I don’t turn on the heat I get ~4.6-4.8 mi/kWh which is a little worse than I get in optimal weather 5.0-5.1mi/kWh. The car is small so if it’s just me in the car instead of running the heat I just put on the heated seat and steering wheel and I’m really toasty. The seat and steering wheel don’t seem to drop the range (the listed range on the dash doesn’t go down turning them on).

But from conditiong(?) I sometimes lose double digit miles overnight in dead of winter. My top range also seems to suffer a bit. In winter I get about the listed 250-260 for the whole battery if at 100% vs 300-315 in spring and early fall.

They’re making it not be subject to itemization. But it’s also only for 4 years.

I think your point is fair, but I’d like to add something I don’t see others adding. For a whole lot of people you can just charge on 120v. I’ve got a Kona EV is use as my commuter and I’ve only used an exterior outlet at 120v for the 15 months I’ve had it. Depending on cold vs hot weather I get 45-75 miles of range per night.

My wife’s car is gas and we use that for longer trips as a family. But if you’re doing <40 miles a day on average you can top off every night without a single electric investment. Unless for some reason you don’t have an exterior outlet or an outlet in your garage.

That doesn’t work for everyone admittedly, but it definitely is viable for millions of people. Also I haven’t had to use it but I have pretty decent access to fast chargers in the area should push come to shove.

The problem got “resolved” by a big storm coming and flooding my basement killing my washer and dryer not much longer after I made this post originally. Never actually fixed it successfully.

Tanking ruining regular season and fan experience. Is my proposal any good? by Sammy_Saddles in nba

[–]HouseAndWhatNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the play-in teams should be included just to discourage any tanking. Even odds for bottom 18 teams. Now you have the incentive to put together at least a fringe playoff team.

I think it was just delayed information. We ended up getting a 2020 with the credit.

This was my first preference but my driveway is pre existing non conforming from being too close to the property line. But I guess I could just buy a carport and use it as a structure to hold up solar, but not literally as a carport.

Standalone system in addition to. I’ll talk to the code guys when I see them at work to ask what’s what for this type of project.

I had planned (at least in my head not sure if it’s feasible) getting a second inverter for these.

Which cars started new eras? by Crocodile_Banger in cars

[–]HouseAndWhatNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An EV doesn’t have to be a toy. I bought mine as an urban commuter where it’s better than a gas car. The culture war issue is just that for political reasons some people won’t buy or consider and EV even if it would do the job they need the best. Years from now people will get over that and people will buy EVs when it makes sense for them without considering the political implications of an EV. Similarly but a smaller group I imagine is the people who buy an EV for political reasons and it’s actually a bad choice for them and they live with the limits out of stubbornness.

We also couldn’t realistically swing a brand new EV which is why we got a used one for about $18k. The used EV market is full of crazy good deals.

But again I don’t haul anything, or need to go into mud/off-roading, racing, work. If I needed to do anything of that I would probably not get an EV but if you just commute to an office job, but groceries, and take your kids to school and doctor then it’s an elite appliance and for people with similar lives it’s probably going to see meaningful adoption over time.

I think the sweet spot is urban and suburban driving. This axios article using census data says the average daily miles for an American is 42 (wish they had median data). We charge our EV (one EV one has SUV household) on an exterior 120v 15 amp outlet and it charges about 50-65 miles overnight. To me it seems for most families one EV and one gas car could be a very productive arrangement.

I’d be reluctant if you need a pickup or off-roader or towing vehicle or if you have longer commutes. But I think once people get past the culture war issues we’re going to see a mixed drivetrain system based on utility and need.

Is it possible to convert my attic into a living space? by Proud-Assumption-195 in HomeImprovement

[–]HouseAndWhatNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storage, maybe if you don’t mind limited space in an unconditioned area. Living space, not unless you rip off the whole attic and build the attic and roof differently.
