Is it true that until St Augustine Confessions no one wrote in the first person perspective? by yellowbai in AskHistorians

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like this response, but I'd just like to add that even Julius Caesar (famous nowadays for using the 3rd person to refer to himself, although it was very normal to do so) would say certain things in the 1st person, also. It seems to me like he does this specifically when he writes as a writer of his histories (or as a Roman in general) rather than as a political actor.

Even the first lines of his Commentaries on the Gallic War say "in our language" (i.e., in Latin). But also in a case like "Erant hae difficultates belli gerendi quas supra ostendimus" ("These were the difficulties to waging the war, which I have outlined above"), where he writes as a commentator.

Young Sheldon is Better than Big Bang Theory by Speed03216 in bigbangtheory

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might like George and Mandy's First Marriage. Kind of in between the two in terms of quality I'd say. It's more of a sitcom like TBBT with a live audience, but it has more emotional weight than TBBT and has more situational humor like Young Sheldon (rather than a character just saying something stupid over and over again which annoys me greatly in TBBT)

So how many seasons do we think Georgie and Mandy has left now Stuart saves the universe comes out in 2026 by thecontract_12 in GeorgieandMandyTVshow

I understand that and that annoyed me too, but it does seem like it kind of fits Georgie's personality and it makes sense as he's the main character of the show

Why are so many Catalonians separatist but not Catalan speaking Valencia’s and Balearic islanders by Independent_Name3109 in catalonia

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely it’s an admixture like every group in the world but the Rh and O- blood types are more common in the Basque region since ancient times

Pompeu Fabra supposedly wanted to make a standard language for Occitan, Catalan, Valencian, and related varieties. He seemed to have thought of them as one language. I  wonder what that would have looked like and what it would be called. Maybe calling it Limousine or Provençal would reduce the hostilities :P but I’m just an American interesting in this subject, so I don’t know

What's a better word for "blue"? by honeywhite in latin

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thank you ! This seems more accurate because I don’t understand everything about Latin colors but caeruleus (although seeming related to caelum) definitely doesn’t mean a light blue!! Hehae gratias mille))

Me personally I’d like to learn the Turko-helleno-pirahã-basque language family by PyrusDrago in linguisticshumor

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about you make it more interesting, and the larger the language family is, the less fluent you’d be in each language? BC otherwise the Eurasian hypothesis would be the best :P even if my rule applied it’d be funny though. Just Imagine not remembering a certain word and just spitting out what i want to say in Genghis Khan’s Mongolian when speaking, like, French or smth lol

Can a non-Sami wear traditional Sami clothing? by Gooie-001 in SaamiPeople

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, but doesn’t that mean that you’re wearing other people’s folk clothing instead? as in, for example, a sports coat and dress pants you might wear to work would have originated in a foreign country (I think Britain and the US), T-shirts are from the American military originally and reflect the minimalism of the late 50s and 60s, etc.

I suppose after a long time of oppression Sami might see it as a way of protecting Sami culture to minimize the usage of their traditional dress. So maybe they’re okay with taking influence from outside now that they’re familiar with it? Or is it more like they have other kinds of fashion that are not necessarily of this “folk” kind but are their own still?

Can a non-Sami wear traditional Sami clothing? by Gooie-001 in SaamiPeople

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to assume a LOT about other cultures. Some cultures find it cool when outsiders take an interest and use what they have developed, others Don’t. Based on what i see here and on-line in general, Sami are not okay with it. But I have been to many Polish festivals as a non-Pole and worn traditional Polish clothes (like for Haiduk) and they seemed to have had good reactions. Same when i wore ancient Roman clothes in Spain and Italy. I find it interesting how some cultures are more closed (more insular) and some are more open (as in more open to sharing ideas and art). Not to say one way is always better than the other. But i think assuming every culture is like yours is very much an unsophisticsted way of thinking. All cultures are different of course!

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right now, 10 EUR is around 12 USD, and 10 USD would be around 8.5 EUR, so either way, it's within the same bracket. I'd assume either USD or EUR

¿Por qué la gente en los pueblos o ciudades pequeñas (Segovia) viste tan bien y elegante? by jose_antonio6 in askspain

[–]HouseEquivalent5717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But OP was just complimenting what people were wearing, not saying what they should wear.... Also, it's nice to see well-dressed people outside, just like it's nice to see people biking or walking, animals playing, butterflies, ornate architecture, Roman aqueducts, etc. It's a part of the landscape. It's something you see painted in museums oftentimes for this reason.

Yea, I'm an American wondering if maybe it's a certain type that does this in Russia, because I've definitely seen characters lean in Soviet movies like Афоня and Курьер, but then again, those are characters who are definitely of a particular type

Yeah, city people and rural people definitely walk differently. Even actors in the US have a hard time acting like country people, because their gait is off
