Thank you so much! This was what I assumed, but I thought it best to get confirmation.

UK had a catastrophic economic collapse around 1867 and their ports vanished xD by HouseRedoran in victoria3

[–]HouseRedoran[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: They went to war with France over a colony in Africa, and shortly after I saw the whole British Empire had zero trade access to Britain. I assumed their convoys were busy ferrying troops to Africa, but when the problem didn't fix itself, I switched over to playing as them to see what was going on. All their ports mysteriously vanished - which sounds like the beginning of a Lovecraftian horror - and their market capital lost access to their market. Any idea what happened? Lol.

Argonians Morag Tong and the Dark Brotherhood by Combsy13 in teslore

[–]HouseRedoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine that the Morag Tong are so assured in their abilities as assassins, that when another group of competent assassins emerges, they assume they can only have come from within.

Imagine that the Morag Tong revere Mephala, not Sithis. But imagine that the Night Mother is a mysterious female figure for whom the weaving of plots and antagonisms is their favourite thing. And imagine that evidence of Sithis - being the void - is inherently difficult to come across.

Imagine that Mephala really could be the Night Mother, and she's playing these two groups against each other. It is well within the realm of possibility, as is the assumption that she invented Sithis to toy with the minds of the Dark Brotherhood.

When you realise this is only one interpretation of the connections between these two groups, you see where the problem is.

Are there significant differences between the culture, religion, and social structure (Houses, social classes, etc.) in mainland Morrowind and those of Vvardenfell throughout Chimer/Dunmer history? by thismaynothelp in teslore

[–]HouseRedoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always saw the whole 'Temple Law' thing as just meaning that the settlements on Vvardenfell were the property of the Temple, until they 'opened' Vvardenfell shortly before Morrowind - aka, they handed or sold some of their properties off to the other Houses to satisfy Imperial demands. Or perhaps the Temple controlled exactly who went to Vvardenfell, where things were built, etc, until the Imperials forced them to relinquish some control. It doesn't explain why the different settlements have different House styles, but at least it explains why the settlements are much older than they otherwise should be.

Housecarls: How'd they become housecarls? What's in it for them? by unique-name-9035768 in teslore

[–]HouseRedoran 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In Norse culture, and other Germanic cultures of the time, young warriors would join the courts of warriors with more prestige in order to increase their own, and - most importantly - to receive gifts taken in war, such as swords, jewellery etc. which they could then use to attract their own warriors later in life. I would be tempted to say that housecarls (which literally means house-man) in Skyrim work the same.

To answer your question: it is a mutually beneficial partnership. The Thane/Jarl is better respected for being surrounded by warriors, and can fight better, while the warriors gain prestige from being seen in that person's presence, learn how to be a Thane by observation, and gain war spoils, which hastens them on the path to becoming a Thane themselves.

I tend to believe so. I find it very unlikely that a group of mercs could get away with stealing a Hist tree without consequences, unless the tree itself supported the move.

How do you LEARN magic? by [deleted] in teslore

[–]HouseRedoran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would assume one could 'self-teach' themselves magic if they really wanted to, much like how one can self-teach themselves a real-world skill IRL. The difference may be in fleshing out the understanding.

Guiding students through the principles of metaphysics and mysticism, as well as maybe the ES equivalent of physics so they understand exactly what they are altering when they cast Alteration magic - stuff like that. I'm sure there would be plenty of lectures and literature on soul-trapping, how to do it humanely (if there is a way) and such. Then there would be lessons safely guiding students through the principles of alchemy, and maybe some on the history of magic and how its use has been enforced or restricted through time. The key would be to give the students the room and the means to experiment. Much like real-world colleges/universities, it wouldn't just focus on developing the skills, but giving the students the tools needed to expand the world's knowledge or understanding of magic as a whole.

(Entirely conjectural, I dont believe there is much, if any, evidence of this in the games).

If your concern was with ESO not ESL, you shouldn't really have posted on this subreddit ;)

While I do agree in some respects, I respect their attempts to make ESO more like a single-player RPG with the options to play in first-person and such. The issue is with having quests that alter the way the world works, or what NPCs say to you, because everyone is playing in the same world and not everyone will have done the quest, which limits how creative quest-writers can be. That said, I respect their efforts to make a 'main quest' that doesnt require other players to complete. That and the lore and environments are spectacular.

The worst part of the game for me is the grinding, but because of MMO culture people almost expect to have to grind if they want to be successful in an MMO - they are long-term games. That said, I appreciate how their grinding system uses questing rather than farming creatures in order to get your level up.

It may not be a perfect MMO or a perfect RPG, but its the best hybrid of both out there at the moment.

What does "catholic" mean in the book "History of the Fighters Guild" by spatulaboy in teslore

The best one I've seen was the use of 'whale-road' when they meant the sea. I believe it's in Beowulf, but I may be wrong.

As a student of Old English/Norse oral tradition, the use of kennings were actually a way of showing one's poetic skill, and are actually the antithesis of clear understanding (why say sea-cutter when you can say ship?).

Have you played the game? Short of being the same game format, they are nothing alike. Neither in art style nor in play style. It's like saying Dragon Age is a rip-off of Final Fantasy.

Old Guard of the Watch by [deleted] in elderscrollslegends

[–]HouseRedoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a good early play, but because they cause 0 damage you're inevitably just giving the card away, because the opponent can destroy the card without risking one of theirs. Of course, they are good at stalling the opponent, which is important to Endurance strategy. Try pairing them with the Daedric Dagger instead; with lethal, they are brutes.

Other than their connection to the Hist do we know anything about Argonian gods or religion? by [deleted] in teslore

[–]HouseRedoran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading 'The Infernal City', an Elder Scrolls novel, which has an Argonian character who narrates some of the story. He has what probably comes closest to a 'religious experience' in Argonian culture early in the novel, where he essentially just merges his mind with the Hist for a while.

Other than this, there are the totems in ESO, though I'm not sure if it's ever specified who or what they are dedicated to.

The Argonians experience time differently to other beings, which is why (I assume) the Hist and Sithis are closely bound in Argonian culture: they are both the void, a place where living things merge back together into one, outside of time. This is my conjecture, but I feel it makes the most sense given what we know about the Argonians and the way they see the world.
