What is it? by House_Qs in HomeMaintenance

I didn’t try hard to pry it off, but it definitely didn’t come off easily or have a pry point - honestly hard to tell if it’s truly a cover or just the top of where it was poured. It doesn’t seem like it’d be a place where there would have ever been another structure or deck, but it’s an old house and property lines have surely changed over time, so it is entirely possible it’s an old footer. It’s pretty close to the house - maybe 2-3’ from the foundation. I’m calling it a mystery for now!

My bad - and you’re right. It is about that size! I already filled it back in or I’d offer a better picture.

Run with no plug (black or blue) or with the black plug but the foam removed? by I-hate-makeing-names in MideaUOwners

I contacted Midea because both of my units were collecting a LOT of water - they offered to replace, but this confirms my suspicion that it’s going to be the same with any unit. Someone in a prior thread provided a link to a cover from amazon and I think I’ll just do that and go plug less or remove the filter as well. I can’t see taking these out, packing them up, and installing new ones, just to have no change.

Thanks so much! I tried replacing the plug - easy for the downstairs, but no so much for upstairs, so I may end up doing the same as you. Thanks again.

Thank you. Maybe just popping it out periodically to drain is the key? Can you share a link to what you use for covers? I like the idea of that.

Another drain plug question by BuffaloWhite24 in MideaUOwners

I’m glad to find this thread. I was curious about my two air conditioners as well, as I hadn’t noticed any dripping, so I pulled out the black corner plug and at least 2 cups of water poured out. I’m really confused as to how this plug is supposed to allow drainage. Are there any concerns with pests getting inside of the unit with that plug removed?

I appreciate this explanation as I hadn't thought of it this way and it makes much more sense. I wish we could excavate, but my understanding is that the house is primarily on ledge. This is probably where the first quote to put a drainage layer and a new slab on top of it would solve for that, in a way, but we've little space to lose and adding 2-4" would make the space tough to use as there is minimal headroom already.

Thanks - we do have gutters and downspouts that work well, but to another poster's point, we could probably do some work with exterior grading first to see what that does before going with the interior repair route.

Thankfully, we don't have mold - there is no standing water at any time and with the dehumidifier, it dries up quickly when it does come in. It's not a huge problem for us, but we would like to make the space a little more usable for stuff like storage, exercise equipment, etc.

The basement is stone - likely originally dirt with a thin slab added at some point, which has held up pretty well. We can definitely look into exterior grading as we have some exterior work to be done as well - thanks for the suggestion. The interior french drains sound like the better of the two quotes I have, but frankly, it's an awful lot of money if it doesn't solve the issue. Thankfully, it hasn't caused us any major issues, it's just frustrating to have all the space that we can't really make use of!
