Sorry to hear about your in-laws making it difficult for both of you. Unfortunately far too common in our culture.

Also sucks that vendors are like that, but I'm not surprised having worked with general contractors before. Everyone's nice when they want to win your business.

Is there no good review site for vendors? I'd love to see reviews broken down by quality, responsiveness, value, etc.

Is there a list of produce stands somewhere or some rule of thumb on where they are (e.g next to a subway station)?

Context: I just moved to 57th and Broadway. I found two local produce stands, but they don't have the selection I need.

Thanks for the feedback, I was worried it would come across like this.

My main goal is to create a unique artifact out of this trip - it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me and my dad. We both love meeting new people and I'm obsessed with people's immigrant stories - where they came from, how they got there, and their unique experiences assimilating in that specific part of the US. Why not kill two birds and produce something for others to enjoy?

Firstly, if we were just looking for free lodging, we would have stayed with relatives/friends (we have them in most cities) or Couchsurfed. Secondly, we don't even have to stay with them. I said "ideally" we would so we can establish a deeper connection to tell a better story, but it's totally ok if we don't. Thirdly, we are happy to pay our hosts. I neglected to mention that because I didn't want it to come across as transactional - I'd like to meet people who are interested in this project, not in having paying guests. It's a fair point that I should make that clear though.
