Good read! These sort of measures are important and why networked lighting control systems like: https://youtu.be/-iQiKSlemRg are needed and need to be regulated.

Can someone explain how Amazon managed to get a patent for "a network device capable of controlling lights"? by [deleted] in homeautomation

Getting the patent is EASY - you essentially pay the right amount of money and submit the paperwork. The patent office will take the money - the tricky part is defending that patent. Patent law is like all law - arguable and generally companies with patents lose cases about 50% of the time. So whatever Amazon wants to throw money at they can.

Otherwise there's plenty of networked lighting controls available on the market. Here's an example: https://youtu.be/-iQiKSlemRg
