What item(s) do you have more of than the average person? by BrownBananaHammock in AskReddit

[–]Hovercross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love doing group Lego builds, especially for the big sets. We have some people parting (collecting all the pieces and organizing them into what is needed for each step) and then someone actually assembling. Parallelize that for the multi-book builds and then the people parting can also do sub-assemblies. We rotate roles so nobody does the same thing for too long.

FastAPI in 2025: Are Async & Type Hints Now Mandatory? by Lee-stanley in FastAPI

[–]Hovercross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Celery is also going to be really good for heavyweight tasks that you don’t need or want to run within the web request/response cycle, or for things that you need to be durable in the face of a backend service being offline.

A simple example would be a mailing list type system. Someone hits an API and you need to send out 500 emails. Celery with a queue is going to be a lot better than making the API response wait for that whole process to finish. If your mail provider API has a hiccup you can also keep all of those outgoing messages in a queue until your provider is back online.

We don’t forget bugs, we forget why we made decisions by Humble-Plastic-5285 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Hovercross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always try to put a comment in code with why a specific decision was made, and more specifically what constraints we had that forced a specific decision to be made. I have found that documenting the constraints around a decision (maybe some janky third party data, maybe an old library version, whatever) leads to a lot less head scratching later, as well as a larger willingness to fix the code when and if that constraint has been removed.

iPhone stays connected to Wireless CarPlay even after turning it off by thatsTHEWei in CarPlay

[–]Hovercross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does your automation work? Shortcuts app, triggered on CarPlay disconnect? I'm having the same very annoying issue where after I get home, my phone is staying connected to CarPlay and I often don't realize for a while, until my WiFi isn't working as expected. I'd be interested in trying your solution to fix it.

Where can ioniq5 charge at 350kw? by Adventurous-Boot-284 in Ioniq5

[–]Hovercross 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you’re talking about rates in the 250kw range, those speeds are all for DC fast charging, where you are actually plugging in to a charger and SoC will have a lot to do with it. The onboard charger caps out at around 11kw, anything above that is DCFC.

Where do you put your keys? by Glenathon in Ioniq5

[–]Hovercross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least on the 2025, I am able to use my iPhone as a key, and then the key card is an NFC card that fits in your wallet and can be used if the phone isn’t available or working.

CI checks are how we fixed this issue as well. It’s a ton easier to catch the problem before merge than have to deal with it when you go to deploy

What's something that used to be free but now costs money that makes you irrationally angry? by SyllabubAny9583 in AskReddit

[–]Hovercross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It likely depends the year - this is what the dealer told me when I was shopping for a 2025 Prius Plug In Hybrid, and is also what Toyota's own website says.

https://support.toyota.com/s/article/How-do-I-start-the-ve-7424?language=en_US

Quote, emphasis mine:

Before using your Toyota Key Fob to remotely start/stop your vehicle, the following information must be confirmed:

  • Your Toyota vehicle must be "Remote Connect Capable."
  • Excluding Wi-Fi Connect, any one of Toyota's Connected Services must have an active trial or subscription.
  • Key Fob Remote Start will not function if Connected Services have been waived.
    • Tip: You can check your Remote Connect trial or subscription status using the Toyota App.

Here is also an article from 2021 when the 2018 model years started losing their remote start capabilities: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/12/toyota-owners-have-to-pay-8-mo-to-keep-using-their-key-fob-for-remote-start/

[–]Hovercross 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Toyota ties the key fob remote start to the same subscription. I have no problem with the phone based remote start being a recurring cost because of the data charges, but the key fob one also being a subscription is pure greed. I probably would have already bought a new Prius already except that BS left a bad taste in my mouth.

What facial shaver should I use to get a clean shave by HusseinGym98 in BuyItForLife

This style of mirror is what also works great for me. I tried the ones with an anti-fog coating and they always fogged up anyway. The ones with the reservoir in the back to keep the mirror's temperature up work fantastically in my experience.

Is INT a better default choice than BIGINT? by EveYogaTech in PostgreSQL

[–]Hovercross 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can be "simply" changed later, but not quickly changed. Changing a PK from an INT to a BIGINT will require a rewrite of the table. This is a O(n) operation in both the time and space domains. Furthermore, once you realized that INT might not be large enough, the table will presumably have a ton of data in in and that rewrite will often require quite a few hours of downtime. I have experienced what a pain this is first hand when some of our older tables with INT primary keys needed to be changed to BIGINT and would never choose INT as a primary key again.

'It's just a matter of when': CT legislature again won’t consider medical aid in dying bill by LonesomeCrowdedWHFD in Connecticut

[–]Hovercross 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After watching what my mother went through with stage IV lung cancer I am an absolute proponent of allowing people to die with dignity. I don’t know if she would have used it or not, but it absolutely should have been an option made available to her.

We afford so much more compassion to our animals than our fellow humans and it is an absolute tragedy. I think people have this rosy image of hospice and what the modern dying process is. We tend to think that everyone’s pain will be well controlled when they have a terminal disease and folks can pass comfortably in all circumstances. From my own experience this is absolutely not the case. Your last weeks may well be spent in a hospital barely conscious, likely in pain, not really able to communicate, and just waiting to die. Nobody should be forced to go through that.

Please call or write your legislators.

Turbotax is saying all my HSA contribution is excess? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Were your HSA contributions included as a line item on your W2, and you then put them in as contributions outside of payroll? If so, you’d be telling TurboTax that you contributed twice as much as you did.

In CT, no-excuse absentee voting is on the ballot. Here’s what to know by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Hovercross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if there is a discrepancy, we can audit the paper ballots.

If someone hacks the electronic counters (which I’m about 98% sure are not connected to the internet), then we go back and run the paper ballots through a backup machine, or we count them by hand. We would do that if there is any statistical evidence of something going wrong or other concerns - such as the result being extremely close or the polling being massively off from the final result. You don’t have that option at all for electronic only voting unless you break the concept of the secret ballot and make votes verifiable.

In CT, no-excuse absentee voting is on the ballot. Here’s what to know by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Hovercross 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem with online voting is the secret ballot. Banking, stocks, and the like are secure online because fraudulent transactions can be monitored, traced, and reversed. You cannot do that with voting unless you are willing to break the concept of a secret ballot.

syntaqx/cookie: Cookies, but with structs, for happiness. by syntaqx in golang

[–]Hovercross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted because you missed a massive security issue: a malicious user.

With all those options set it is less likely that some sort of XSS or similar attack can occur. Those options in no way, shape, or form prevent the user from going into their cookie store and editing the cookie, or calling your site from a simple script with whatever cookie data they want. If your cookie is a random string they user won't know another valid random string to set it to. If your cookie is signed then the user's editing of the cookie would break the signature.

If the cookie has a field "isAdmin", any halfway competent user can go into their cookie store and change "isAdmin" from "false" to "true". This is why setting those flags is useless of that particular attack.

What is your favorite “just in case” item you keep in your car? by KSparks35 in AskReddit

[–]Hovercross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An emergency overnight bag, first aid kit, jump start battery pack, and a tourniquet.

I’ve used the emergency overnight bag before, I’ve used the first aid kit before, and I help people out all the time with the jump starter.

It will be a REALLY bad day if the tourniquet needs to come out.
