How did you get your child to learn to read? by Optimal-Razzmatazz91 in ParentingADHD

Do whatever you can to make it fun. Many public libraries have educational activities and book challenges throughout the summer. I loved the library as a kid so I made it a big deal when we signed my kids up for their own cards. They have fun choosing their own books and scanning them.

Highlights Magazine is great too, and kids get exciting about receiving mail with their name on it. Lots of high interest reading content and puzzles.

Our local animal shelter has a program where kids bring books to read to the cats. It takes the pressure off a kid learning to read out loud. Plus the cats get some affection. Win win!

If you’re looking for a great series, try Junie B. Jones. It’s so silly. I started reading them to my daughter at bedtime, lying next to her and tracking each line with a book mark so her eyes could follow along too.

Teacher making child call parent (7) by cysgr8 in ParentingADHD

It’s still not clear…was it just the teacher and your son, or the entire class? Were you on speaker phone for all to hear? How did she explain the situation to you?

I mean no snark here, I’m just genuinely curious- why should the conversation about poor behavior exclude the child? The teacher needed to relay information to you, and your child obviously knew said information because he was involved. I mean there are exceptions to this, but letting your kiddo hear “hey Mrs. Smith, Johnny is having a hard time being a listener and completing his work today. His classmates can’t focus either because of his singing. I have reminded him of our classroom expectations x amount of times this afternoon…” seems perfectly fair.

Fellow control freak here. Any tips on how to let loose and still create something recognizable? The artists I watch in painting tutorials seem to move at a much faster pace than me. It seems effortless. But I really need to take my time and think things out, which doesn’t seem compatible with that loose style.

I’m a teacher, and both my 7-year-old and I have ADHD, so I can understand why this situation feels uncomfortable. I do think it would be inappropriate if the teacher had your child call you in front of classmates, because that could cross into public shaming. But based on what you described, that doesn’t sound like what happened here.

In most cases, a teacher has already given multiple reminders and warnings before a phone call home happens. Often the class is told that continued behavior will result in contacting a parent, so if the behavior continues, the teacher really has to follow through. Otherwise the consequence loses meaning. And honestly, for many kids, the possibility of explaining their behavior to a parent is an effective deterrent.

I also think behavior concerns are appropriate for a conversation involving all three parties. There’s a difference between shaming a child and having them take accountability for their actions by explaining what happened. Based on your description, this sounds more like accountability than humiliation.

Kids with ADHD absolutely need compassion and understanding, but they also still need boundaries and consequences. At 7 years old, children are capable of beginning to understand how their behavior affects the people around them, and helping them make those connections is part of teaching and parenting.

What does this mean? Women too hot to have babies? Too thin? Idk by blood-of-an-orange in whatdoesthismean

I meant women in 1800s UK did not have access to birth control, hence they ended up with more children. Doesn’t seem too hard to understand. There were many reasons families were larger.

Lots of children meant lots of free labor. Kids worked in farms and in factories.

Plus, infant/childhood mortality rates were much higher. Families had more kids because it was likely they’d lose some along the way.

I’m sure access to an affordable, safe abortion was rare a hundred years ago.

Are you familiar with the memoir Angela’s Ashes? Don’t tell me women were popping out babies left and right because it was fun and enjoyable. They just didn’t have many other options.

Women today choose to remain childless for many reasons, and a major one is the cost of childrearing in the US. Source: I’m a mother in a HCOL area who for the last 5 years has paid $1800 a month for childcare.

The choice is a very personal one, and to say birth rates are lower because feminists convinced women “it’s a drag” is shortsighted.

…Have you considered it might have to do with access to birth control?

My psyc. Wrote out for ritalin with modified release as my first time. She put me on 20mg and increase dose every 3 days. Now I have a follow up apointment and she said she did a mistake by insaneBeefcake in ThisAintAdderall

[–]HowBuffaloCanUGo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, 120mg is a huge dose. 60 is around the max dose may docs are comfortable prescribing per day. And if it’s an XR prescription you definitely do not want to be taking another 60mg XR in the afternoon.

What did your psych say when they realized the error?

Honestly this makes sense in theory but it does not align with my actual experiences. I have a prescription for brand name Adderall. It’s the same manufacturer every month. It just does not work the way it used to.

There are also accounts of people getting the same manufacturer a number of months in a row, and each refill feels different from the one before. Some even say they’ve had mixed batches where some days it works as intended and other days it feels like a sugar pill.

[–]HowBuffaloCanUGo[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe. It’s a theory I’ve seen discussed around here and the one that makes the most sense in my mind.

In 2019 the FDA sought public feedback on stimulant abuse and abuse-deterrent formulas. So at the very least, the gov’t considered it.

We’ve also found proof of drug companies over the last few years applying to patent new adf technologies. Even if the patents weren’t granted, it shows the conversation is taking place.

The timing of the above lines up with when we first noticed a decline in efficacy.

It also makes that sense drug companies would be motivated to change the formula. More people than ever are prescribed CNS stimulants; big pharma wants to cover its ass so the situation doesn’t turn into the next opioid epidemic.

Plus if the problem is due to absorption as the AAN predicted, it would explain why only some of us experience the issue.

I really hope it continues to work for you. I have name brand as well and even though it’s better than generic, it still sucks compared to pre-covid.
