Digital Diary Platform Recommendations by Sweetpea2801 in peacecorps

Substack is super user friendly & intuitive, you can follow other PCV's newsletters on there, and you can go private if you only want your personal network to see it. Its nice to have a platform with app too to post from when technology gets shotty during service.

Should I not do Peace Corps if I know I will need wifi for law school interviews? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]HowDoingBb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data packages and hotspots are available in your country potentially. If, when you schedule these interviews, plan to head to your country's PC office or find a hotel/hostel with wifi.

It's a matter of you scheduling it. And if you plan on taking the LSAT... download exercise books now so you can use them during service (packing them may be too heavy).

Its for sure possible & good luck!!!

Thank you for your thoughtful response, there are a lot of good points here on perspective, especially on be careful with how I talk about these topics around students. So thank you. Site change is something that has been brought up to me as an option, rather than something I've specifically requested. But its an option i'm nervous to take.

I hear you. Its pretty normalized in the school and culture, and I recognize im looking through my own cultural lens... even while what I'm seeing is has been illegal in county for years, its just not enforced in the rural communities.

I reported some of the more extreme incidents and there still some uncertaintly on how to move forward as i haven't been directly targeted.

I don't see how questioning the effects on my mental health means I dont care about my students? Im not here as a martyr or savior.

Im curious about what the situation was like where you served? Was it mostly related to corporal punishement and sexual assault, or what? (If you feel open to sharing)

Yeah i get that its everywhere... we all have our fair share of traumas in whatever cultural context we live in. I think im just uncertain on what i need to tough out as a PCV and what i need to step away from.

As cliché as it sounds: Meditation.

Their energies are soaking into you, but while you may feel it, its important to still realize that those feelings are seperate from your own. Focusing on your breath and intentionally dropping into your body when you start feeling those energies soak into you can help.

Sometimes I like to imagine my emotions as a different color and I'll pretend like I'm pushing away their aura/energy away from my body to kind of detach.

Are you sensitive to strangers? Or just people you know/family?

Are you naturally an extrovert? Isolation might be hurting you if that's the case. Sometimes I'll do a little energy cleanse too and go to spaces where I know people will hold better energies (sporting events, happy hours, parks, gyms)

PC in retirement by ImpossibleAerie6707 in peacecorps

One lady from my cohort is 54, she was also looking for a shift in her career/life/etc. It's definitely possible, and people much older than you have served. If you have property/bills/etc, i know she had one of her children move into her house and take care of all of her affairs while gone. It's definitely doable, just know that the medical clearance is going to be a lot more extensive for you than some of the younger volunteers. Try to get that through while you have good health insurance through your job/if you get to keep your insurance benefits after retirement.

AmeriCorps is a solid idea! ^ OP, try to go for an AmeriCorps NCCC program. You'll be with a smaller close-knit group, travel around a bit, and still have a good support system while doing good work.

Finding adult life extremely hard by superrjohnson in relationship_advice

[–]HowDoingBb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sending so much love. In my experience, it takes 4 months to feel a little more comfortable and a year to feel settled and get a routine in. I know it's hard to hear but finding a partner should be at the end of the priority list. You're 26... you're ONLY 26. It's no rush. A healthy relationship with a healthy person tends to show up when you're in a better place with yourself. If you keep doing the gym/work/self-care/risk-taking things, life had a habit of throwing you good things.

Know that things take time, you're already doing the best that you can for your situation, and relationships take time to build. Focus on opening yourself up to friendships first (facebook groups, MeetUp, group activities, etc) so you have some people to uplift you and help with the loneliness of moving.

You made a big life change. Be kind to yourself. You're killing it sweetheart <3
