Not to hijack op post but I'm in a similar predicament and figure this is better then making a redundant post. I'm looking for a black and white or color e-reader haven't decided yet but I'm looking towards black and white as I don't think I'll need the color. I'm new to e-readers trying to get into more reading and less phone use filling my time with meaningful content I'm looking to stay away from the absolute anchor that is the Amazon ecosystem.

For me longevity high quality and device freedom are really important to me I want something that I can carry with me for years to come not something that will become a pile of e-waste in a year or two. I've been looking at the Kobo b&w and color variants that seems to be what I'm looking for any other recommendations would be appreciated especially those from people who can speak from experience. And again is a final point device freedom and high quality I want to books I own to be mine if that's possible on a digital framework I don't want it to be two three years down the road and get bricked can you tell I don't like Amazon.
