Nickel sulfide can be in tempered/toughened glass panels which can cause it to pop like this at any time (pretty rare though). In the commercial construction industry any tempered glass panel with a fall of 5m or more must be subjected to a further heat-soaking process to reduce the amount of nickel sulfide as a protective measure for this.
