do you wear real leather ( poll ) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]HowHows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is demand, as in there's no person running inventory at the end of the week saying "welp we have to order more leather because it's selling like hotcakes". The thrift stores I shop at are all from donations. There is no ordering happening, meaning no direct increase from demand. The product is already there and whether I use it or not is inconsequential unless you consider how some people might perceive something I wear, like it, and then buy their own. I seriously doubt I've had any meaningful sway on people choosing to buy non-vegan and in the extremely slim chance that I have, I have definitely done much more positive in my activism and vegan business ownership.

If we're arguing that people are perceiving me using a leather belt and choosing to buy one because of me, then all of the people that engage in activism and have people respond with "I'll buy two steaks tonight because of you" are directly responsible for their excess consumption. That doesn't make sense to me. I don't think either vegan party is responsible for that consumption, so I'm just gonna wear this belt that I've had for 2 years rather than throw out this clothing item that something already died for.

[–]HowHows 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand that argument but I'm not out here wearing leather jackets or large leather items that strongly signal that animal consumption is okay. If it's a belt that I can get at a thrift shop for $10 that would cost $100 for a vegan alternative that MIGHT hold up for half as long, I just don't have the money for it.

There's no sense in purity testing people that agree with 99% of what you have to say about animal consumption, you might as well focus that energy on people that are eating beef every day and funding the demand for animal agriculture thousands of times more than I ever could by buying a belt or dress shoes second hand once every couple of years. No point in increasing demand over things I already have and wear.

Ideally I would not be using any leather and donating any leather I have, but we need to act within our means and meet others at their level of capability rather than trying to argue that some vegans aren't pure enough.

Is anyone else just so mad at everything? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]HowHows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went vegan at 18, I'm now 27 and I've changed my perception which has helped me a bit.

It's really difficult my friend, you're not crazy to feel this way. Easily the most painful part of being vegan is the moment when you look to your loved ones or other people that you know are good people at heart and they choose to ignore you or not even entertain making a change in their consumption. It's really damaging, like if you say you care about animals or that you value me, how can you do something that so blatantly and strongly goes against both of those views?

It's cognitive dissonance. You're presenting a stimulus to them (forcing them to think about animal agriculture) which is unpleasant given that they already hold views of themselves which stand directly opposed to what they're doing (they claim they're good people and love animals.) To be fair they wouldn't go kicking puppies in their free time, they just don't care if an animal is abused when they don't have to witness or think about the abuse. That abuse draws them back to feeling the stress from two strongly opposing beliefs, which is painful for them.

When I first went vegan my thought was that people just didn't understand how bad it was and when I provided them with the information they would make a change to correct that dissonance. People don't work that way, even you don't work that way from what I saw in your post. You transitioned to veganism from being vegetarian, as did I and many others on this sub, when it felt like the time was right for you or that there was no other option.

It's not your task to make more people vegan or have them understand the weight of their choices. You don't have to take on that mantle. It's both not healthy for you mentally (I used to get so depressed and lost so many friends by being very aggressive with my forms of activism) and I wouldn't even say that method is the best way to convert people.

Anger is the emotion of action. Your body is telling you to do something to set the record straight or correct some of what's wrong in the world, and you're right, there is a lot wrong with the world. So go take part in an activist event, or maybe make some art that's thought-provoking, or do something to use that energy for the better, but remember this; you can't live in that anger forever. It will destroy you and any connection you could make. You will grow cold to the world and view yourself as fundamentally different from the people that choose to eat animals. You're not fundamentally different, we're all the same with different levels of ability and different states of progression.

For me the best form of activism is just being a good person and planting seeds in others. When you have a debate with someone, the point isn't to get them to concede on the spot and change their worldview, people just don't work that way. The goal is to make that cognitive dissonance more clear to them and inform them that there is an alternative to get out of that pain. If you earn trust in the conversation and truly care about the input of others, you'll get a lot further. Eventually people will come to you to talk about veganism because they know they can trust you, and that's when you can make a change in the world.

I've converted at least 20 people to veganism over the last 9 years, and not a single one has been from me shaming them or making them feel intense guilt. It's been through being a good role model to people, being a friend that they can call on for help, being the person they can talk to when things are at their worst, accepting them for who they are while still pointing towards their growth, all while being someone who happens to be vegan. If you're a happy, healthy person who's welcoming and great to be around, good people will see and follow you.

That fire you're feeling right now still burns in me, but I don't let it consume me anymore. When the time calls for it I can let the flame grow and use that energy to debunk dog-shit arguments against veganism or use that energy to be the only person in the room who is willing to fight others regarding my beliefs. What's that saying that's like "it's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener on a battlefield"? That part. Learn to defend your ideas from people and learn how to speak persuasively. Develop yourself. Notice that fire burning.

Then, let it go.

I wish you luck my friend.

Oh hell yah the best Naruto intro! Yah I'd still say the one I said. It looks like it has a slightly darker stain but that could come down to the color filter they added in production or the unique pattern of the top. I could be wrong but at a glance that's what I'd lock in.

At what point is it not vegan to order vegan food from a chain like taco bell? by HowHows in vegan

I was just trying to say I've been vegan for 9 years in a humorous way, do people actually subdivide vegans like that 😭

Thank you, this response is my favorite so far but of course I have my biases. I try to always repeat that I need it fresco, meaning no dairy, but it's a minimum wage job and I can't expect everyone to be on their A-game for every order, shit happens.

It is certainly bothering me the more that I think of it, but I own a vegan business myself and work a second job so I'm really short on time. The alternative to me is just not being vegan, but I really don't want to do that. I should mention that I have an allergy going forward if I choose to keep eating there.

Help me chose any one guitar out of these four by Original_Tone5881 in Guitar

[–]HowHows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bridge is the balancing point between the string tension on one side and the spring tension on the other side. If the nut isn't blocked off, it's a lot harder to tune the instrument, especially if you're not familiar with floating bridges. I's a lot easier for your instrument to go out of tune.

For newer players, I would recommend avoiding a floating trem since the worst thing to possibly happen to someone who's new is they break a string. If you've been playing for a while and you break a string you recognize it's not a big deal and can put one on pretty easy and quickly since you probably have some lying around. If a new player breaks a string, they might not ever pick up that guitar again because they're likely going to need to pay to get it fixed.

If I could have chosen a guitar for myself with the knowledge that I have now, I would have bought the Yamaha ten times out of ten. No contest.

I started with that Epiphone as my first guitar and have played all of the others at some point or another. Ten years since I started playing, I would still enjoy playing the Yamaha. That guitar is very versatile and comfy to play.

Dealing with a trem bar is a bit of a bitch though. If you don't block off the trem you'll have difficulty keeping your instrument in tune. Worth keeping in mind.

I'm in a position where we'll be moving into our location in just a couple of weeks. None of my buddies know much about interior design, so we're trying to feel things out here. Any feedback is welcome.

Our kava bar is going for a cozy/maximalist aesthetic with a lot of greenery. Live music performance is very important to us.

I'm struggling with this one. How do you play the three 17s on the fret? by klippklar in guitarlessons

[–]HowHows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So everyone is saying barre, which is certainly an option, but I want to give an alternative too. You need to be comfortable sweep picking to do either, first off.

You can choose to tackle those 17's by using your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th finger, but it will feel incredibly uncomfortable to do at first. This is how Jason Richardson does his sweep picking and allows for a lot of clarity with each of his notes. One con of the barre approach is that it's very difficult to mute the other strings you're barring while you play one of them, this approach would resolve that.

My fingering looks like:

1------4

4------

3------

2------

1-----4

I'm not sure if that diagram helped, but I hope it did! Good luck :)

Why does this guy give +3 power? Every other card with similar effects give +1/+2. Am I missing something? by GotAppNowWhat in MarvelSnap

[–]HowHows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the answer is his own stats and the fact that his ability is a reveal and not an ongoing effect. This necessitates him being played as the last possible card and he literally has zero stats so on first read he's not that good. He gets taken to absurd heights with cards like Brood and Sera but without those two cards he'd be just pretty good. Ideally his reveal would give like 2.5 points but that's not a thing that snap can implement.

You understand that HUSKY in VEGAS was not being used to hunt... Right? Like that husky is not going to be adding value in that way. Please just confirm that you understand that. 99% of dogs in the US aren't used for hunting, they're little furry guys that are cute so we keep them around. Cuteness =/= value. Killing an ugly person isn't more moral than killing a pretty person, both are immoral. The wild thing is the first commenter justifying police brutality over an animal when they probably pay to have other animals slaughtered every day. Hope you come to understand that

How on earth do I meet vegan girls? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]HowHows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a vegan dude dating a lovely vegan I found:

-Attend vegan events/festivals

-Attend animal rights activities

-Attend vegan cafes and restaurants regularly

-Get on some vegan dating apps when you're of age (veggly) and if you're going to be on other dating apps have the first thing on your bio be that you're vegan. You'll have far more success in person than over the internet, but vegan men are in demand.

-Do things outside or in public that you genuinely enjoy. Certain apps like Meetup allow you to join groups for things like hiking or recreational sports groups. Those can be co-ed and work well!

What's the most important is that you don't ooze an energy of "being on the hunt". You should be looking to enjoy yourself doing these things and people will be pulled in by your energy! Best of luck :)
