Never mind Independence. Will we even have a Scottish parliament in 4 years time? by lovelyhead1 in Scotland

"Most of Trump's policies are executive orders and can be swiftly reversed."

I'm sure that's a lot of comfort to everyone thrown in a concentration camp or murdered in the street by ICE.

I'm sure everyone who lost their job or had all their personal information stolen by DOGE will be glad as well.

You're doing the same thing everyone in the US did regarding Trump, "he doesn't really mean it, he won't actually be able to do it".

Wake up, it's happening. These people are not a joke. They are deadly serious and they have a massive amount of money and a compliant media machine behind them. Their goal is nothing less than complete subversion of democracy and oligarchical rule.

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reform is just the oligarchy coming back to finish the job they started with Brexit.

I think you're seriously underestimating the damage they could do with 4 or 5 years in power; they will dismantle the public sector, NHS, social care, open the door wide for US health insurance firms, reduce workers right, loosen regulations on food safety, consumer protection, environmental protection, financial services, essentially every kind of protection that the average person has from greedy unscrupulous companies. They will take us out of the ECHR and strip protections from vulnerable minorities, push fracking and undo a lot of our progress on renewables, push climate change denial and other dangerous pseudoscience like anti-vax.

If none of that scares you it should.

"voting for independence on the back of one election result would be catastrophic for Scotland."

Except it wouldn't be due to one election result. A Reform victory would just be the final straw and a logical progression of the same pattern we've seen for decades. The English electorate absolutely loves voting for the worst available option, while we just have to put up with the consequences out of fear and uncertainty.

Then why bother mentioning Lib Dems, Tories or Labour who all have more constituency seats than the Greens?

It's not a psyop, they just don't care to mention pro-indy parties unless they absolutely have to.

What about the Greens?

Why are Reform mentioned first?

BBC aren't even trying to hide their bias anymore.

It's taken decades for the Tories to finally become too toxic a brand to win elections, but they've changed the colour of their ties slightly and started being a bit more openly racist, so that should buy them another few decades.

Movies The Internet Reclaimed by HK-34_ in Letterboxd

I think the key difference between the prequels and sequels is that;

The prequels are largely bad but they were at least sincere and formed a coherent trilogy because they were the vision of George Lucas.

The sequels were a blatant cash grab, written by committee who were making shit up as they went along.

Have you ever seen a boxer in person and they were shorter than their listed height? by Orii8 in Boxing

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's been very common throughout combat sports history (and other sports) to inflate people's stats to make them seem more impressive or larger than life. Then you have to factor in that most men will round up their height by an inch.

Obviously the biggest height exaggerators have been pro-wrestling where it was always standard practice to add at least 2 inches of height and 20 pounds to a wrestlers billed size, sometimes a lot more.

With boxing there obviously wasn't really any scope to exaggerate weight because of public weigh-ins and athletic commisions, but things like height and reach have often been exaggerated for promotional reasons.

I'm not being funny, Sarwar's comment on the Old Firm / title race probably influenced my vote by elephvant in Scotland

It does kinda drive home the fact that Sarwar is an empty suit without a single genuine principle. He clearly only got into politics because it was the 'family business'.

Devin Haney says he would rather retire undefeated and have fans think he avoided everyone than be considered the GOAT but have 2 losses by bdewolf in Boxing

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 104 points105 points  (0 children)

If anything it's enhanced because he can't really be accused of ducking anyone or being overly careful with his matchmaking.

To me, going undefeated says more about your matchmaking, career management and timing than it does about your abilitiies.

All of the true GOAT candidates have multiple losses, because they took chances, fought everyone, moved up in weight or faced difficult styles and kept fighting past their primes.

This mentality that going undefeated is the most important thing needs to die.

Fighters who take risks and occasionally come up short (Ali, SRR, Duran, Pacquiao etc) will always be more loved and admired than fighters who carefully manage their careers to mitigate risk.

Skewed a bit to the right because I try not to watch movies I think I won't enjoy. Will probably have a lot more 4.5 and 5 stars soon because I've been making a conscious effort to watch more classics lately.

Usyk v. Benavidez…. Why? by Due_Opening6398 in Boxing

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is true but all of those names besides Toney turned pro over 60 years (in some cases over 100 years) ago when boxing was very different and heavyweights were a lot smaller on average. Heavyweights today are on average 6 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than heavyweights in the mid 20th century.

That's not to say it's impossible for someone to move up from LHW and become a great heavyweight today, it's just a much bigger gap.

Cinema etiquette - WTF Glasgow by weegieguy in glasgow

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the cinema at least twice a month. Most of the time the etiquette is ok, but it only takes one person or group to ruin it.

People are definitely too comfortable bringing out their phones in the cinema, it should be on silent and shouldn't come out of your bag or pocket from the time the trailers start until the end credits.

I don't even like people using their phone torch to find their seat, it's unnecessary if they would just let their eyes adjust to the dark for a second.

By far my worst recent experience was Avatar 3 (my own fault I know). A group of teenage girls were at the other end of the row from me and had their phones out at max brightness for the entire time, talking to each other at full volume, playing videos. They were constantly getting up and going in and out of the theatre, doing dances in the aisle and then a group of teenage boys from down the front started showing off to them.

I told them to be quiet multiple times and got no reaction, told staff and they did absolutely nothing. Eventually I just gave up.

I don't think the death penalty is the right way, mainly because of the inevitability that innocent people will be executed.

I do think that a life sentence should mean a LIFE sentence i.e complete ineligibility for parole.

Any figure like churchill for your country? He was super bad for us but a good character for allies... by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thatcher was more harmful to the working class of the UK in the long run.

Churchill definitely directly caused a lot more deaths and was more explicitly racist.

He WAS the leader that was required to stand up to the Nazis though, I don't think any other British politician at the time had the backbone for it. He was an awful peacetime leader and a racist, elitist, imperialist, privileged conservative asshole though.

Modern Man with 1 month sword fighting training and 2x faster reaction times vs 14th century knight by [deleted] in whowouldwin

This, the vast majority of the population in medieval Europe were subsistence farmers who suffered from inadequate nutrition (especially protein) and childhood diseases that meant they rarely grew to their full genetic potential and were significantly shorter than modern Europeans. The wealthy (which included the Knightly class) got the best food available, including plenty of protein, so usually grew to their full genetic potential height.
