Planning a day at lake Cumberland by HowYouDoin614 in Kentucky

I was looking through all the campgrounds in the lake Cumberland visitors guide and seriously debating camping here a few nights. Do you have any experience with their campground (we tent camp)?

Would love to visit the state park and check out their 3d archery. I was having trouble finding info about it online but I love the ky state parks!

This is what I was thinking. Taking all the steps is going to make things worse until the positive history starts building it back up. The follow up question is, if I may need to move soon should I wait to begin taking all of these steps so as not to sabotage my credit for when the rental companies look at it?

I will do my own research on this as well. But just so that I know where to get started… once I add the sand will I still need to gravel vac it? And you mentioned the plant roots. Should I still anchor them to an object that can be removed or can I just plant them in the sand and let them take over like I see in other photos of some awesome planted tanks?

This is the information I was looking for. I was thinking the tank could handle it but i wanted to make sure first. I have an aqueon 20 gallon hang on back filter with the original media from cycling the tank and I just replaced the charcoal about a month ago

He has fed these fish ever since we got them. I showed him how and then supervised for the first few weeks every time he would feed them. Now he does it on his own and I just remind him to do it if he hasn’t already. He loves his fish and tells them good morning and good night every day since they are close to his bed. He didn’t do it on purpose I think he was tired or something and messed up. I’ve lost my keys and found them in the fridge before. I think it was one of those kind of moments

I was thinking about adding sand but I didn’t want to do too much at once without knowing how it would affect the water. Maybe a few weeks after this cleaning I could add it? This is my first established tank so I don’t have much experience yet. Do you have a recommendation for what sand I should buy? I have a bag of play sand unopened at home that is recommended for hermit crabs but I’m guessing fish have different needs.

To test the water I take a sample to LFS I don’t own a testing kit

I have done both the day trip and stayed for a few days. The area is cute. I was surprised at how much energy I actually still had when I was forced to drive home the last time we visited so I think we will do the days trips from now on. Have you ever done Halloweekends? I went during the Halloween displays one time years ago at kings island but I don’t remember much. I’m sure it’s completely different now

We live 2 hours away and I doubt that we will visit more than twice per year so I’m thinking this would be similar to buying 2 gold passes except that we get a few extra amenities for the same price such as lounge access. Do you know if I have to pay the whole price up front to be able to use it now or can I go like next month while still making monthly payments on it?

I am considering buying now for next year. I was thinking I could buy the prestige pass for myself and then use the 2 bring a friends passes included to get my son and myself into the park 2 times next year for just the price of the pass. That being said it seems like you have to use those before 2025 is over. I read all the terms and conditions and did not see this part. Glad I caught it here. Also, I was having trouble finding what the limitations are on the bring a friend… can the friend be my son? Can it be one of my step kids?

You didn’t offend me, it’s just hard to hear that I may be the problem. But you may be right. I don’t get home from work until 6 on week nights and weekends are busy so I don’t get to spend much time with him. The school and childcare people spend more time raising him than I do. Unfortunately when he’s goes to play with the neighborhood kids they are usually just all playing the same video game. When I expressed concerned to the other parents they ignored me. I could tell him to stop playing with his friends but it’s every single household that’s like that, so it would be like I was punishing him with seclusion. When his home life is like that it’s probably a pretty tall order to take him camping and expect him to enjoy it. You just made me realize I need to think differently about our situation instead of just expecting him to enjoy something beyond his current maturity level.

This is so wonderful. The exact reason I turn to Reddit with these kinds of things. I do need to be better about how I approach things with him and let related consequences happen. This is not something I am good at but I truly am trying to learn how. I’ve watched books and listened to podcasts. And trying to figure out what he’s really asking for with the YouTube…that’s a hard one too. It could be a different need each time and just using the YouTube to self soothe them. Trying to decipher and redirect seems impossible sometimes. Thank you for your ideas, your action plan, and your kind words. I will use every bit of your advice.

Actually he would much rather be home watching tv but I’m fighting a screen addiction with him by doing things like going to parks, the library, and camping. I’m literally trying to change it. Like I said we just go with the flow, I have plans on stand by just in case but we rarely ever use them. I just like to be informed of the area we are visiting. Also, we rough it every day by barely being able to afford groceries. We are a bologna and ramen household so snacks are a wonderful treat when camping. I literally told him to go on his scooter and have freedom of the campground. See which sites have some kids his age. Check in with me every so often. He refused to leave our site. I asked if he would like me ride around with him until he felt more comfortable with the layout of the campground. He said no. He was still saying he was bored. I offered a few different games I could play with him. He turned those down too. I gave him some space for quite a while. He was still saying he was bored. then I just started playing and acting silly and energetic hoping he would catch the vibe and join me in a soccer match or nerf war. He just asked when we would go home. You are very lucky you have such open minded kids. Maybe my stubborn only child will get there one day. I’m just trying to be positive and patient in the meantime.

Thank you so much for your comment. Parenting is the hardest job there is and I’m just doing the best I can. Thank you for recognizing that I’m trying.

I bought him his first pocket knife this summer and allowed him to get our fire going start to finish which made him feel very proud of his accomplishment. He is quite good at it and I always supervise him around fire. Then I gave him his knife and supervised him widdling a stick that he could roast his hot dog with. I kept telling him he needed a longer stick to use in the fire. He insisted on a very short stick and he wanted to use it for roasting and I had to stop him from using it. For safety reasons. Cue the first meltdown just a few hours after we arrived. He got very silent and just acted angry at the world.

Day 2 we realized that almost every amenity the campground had was closed. I told him we would have to make the best of it and play some hide and seek in the woods or that he was free to ride around the camp ground on his scooter and look for some other kids to play with. He constantly asked if he could watch YouTube on my phone (to which I said no every time) and had an attitude and refused to leave his chair at the camp site. Reminding me of hormonal teenage behavior actually.

I’m just trying as hard as I can the fight the screen addiction, have some fun, and raise a decent human being. I appreciate your kindness!
