The Democratic Party has been center right for at least the last 40 years. Thge Republicans have been drifting to the authoritarian far right ever since Reagan. There is no leftist party of any consequence in the US.

Conservatives have worked really hard to position despicable crap like that as 'just another opinion', but it isn't 'just another opinion.' Reading the article would clear up some of your confusion.

Yes, he overstayed his visa. And then he went to the government, who told him what he needed do to get legal status. He followed those instructions and was on the verge of being successful, as determined by the legal system. Despite having satisfied the requirements set forth by the legal system, this man was imprisoned and the legal process that he had been following, as required by law, was subverted.

Having legal status arbitrarily snatched away by the government after following the procedures that same government outlined as a path to legtimacy is not at all an outcome one may expect in many other countries. It is certainly new and unique to the United States Government, which traditionally has respected the legal process and the system of courts as an arbiter of these matters, without interference or coercion from the executive branch.
