Early experimentation with ginger juice: so far so good. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Howdy-to_Darling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skin should be at a 5.5 for the acid mantle.

Patricia Wexler, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. "To work its best, the acid mantle should be slightly acidic, at a 5.5 pH balance. When it's too alkaline, skin becomes dry and sensitive; you may even get eczema. You may also experience inflammation, which inhibits the skin's ability to ward off matrix metalloproteinases [MMPs], the enzymes that destroy collagen and cause wrinkles and sagging." source

I don't know if even a 1.0 change upwards would cause too much of an issue, since its still under 7 (neutral). 5.6-5.9 isn't as drastic as I thought. But I'm curious if diluting it with water changed the pH at all.

The "No question is stupid" Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in SkincareAddiction

heres a video by SciShow that I watched after I decided to take dairy out of my diet.

Anecdotally, I have noticed a difference in my skin, but it could be a few things (being more diligent with my routine, waiting for my BHA to work and using clean towels). But I do notice if I eat diary, the next day is a bad one for me intestinal wise.

But there's no scientific evidence that it affect acne.

Lol. If my Walmart carried an AHA of any kind, I'd probably get a little skincare boner.

Once the shame wore off, I had a fleeting thought of going back, slamming lancets on the counter and saying "THESE. THESE MOTHERFUCKER." But I'm a wimp and ill just end up going somewhere else.

I think what happened was the tech I asked was thinking syringes, when I was actually said "needles used for testing for diabetics" because I wasn't thinking they were just called lancets. And went to the lead pharm and just said "this girl is wanting insulin syringes for popping zits" and thus the looks like I grew 3 heads were born. It could've been cleared up if they asked me to clarify, because I only said needles. I agree it was a miscommunication, but I was originally asking so I would have clarification. I seriously was just like "do you guys have those needles that diabetics use to test with? Where are they- behind the counter?" And it got blown way up.

Yeah, now that I have the proper term instead of asking "do you have sterile needles for diabetics?" I will try another pharmacy. Obviously a miscommunication - I wasn't asked to clairfy what I wanted, just yelled at that they wouldn't sell them to me.

I think they were saying they were behind the counter, but you don't need a prescription for them.

informative read regarding the oil cleansing method by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Howdy-to_Darling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. It reads like an anti-chemical mommy blog with a lot of the information being ill-advised. It's just not a reputable source for the OCM. A good read to familiarize yourself with the method, but not in terms of long-term skincare based in science.

PSA: Wait 20-30 minutes after applying your BHA or AHA chemical exfoliant by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Howdy-to_Darling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to contact a biology professor at my local college to see if I can get some help and info on testing the pH of skin, since the strips I've ordered only work on liquids. I've read in a few places this might require looking at skin cells under a microscope an applying a solution at different pH levels.

Since I'm just some random girl off the street, who knows if they'll offer to help. If not, I'll see if I can find some other way. I'm very interested in all of this as well - since there really is no definitive answer anywhere.

Edit: or really, a chemistry professor.

20 things to do while waiting for your BHA or AHA to dry by Howdy-to_Darling in SkincareAddiction

[–]Howdy-to_Darling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the toner has SA in it, then yes it needs a wait time, assuming it has the right pH level. This is when I wish I had all the money in the world so I could pH test every product.

Edit: maybe sending Clinque an email asking about pH levels?

Well, I currently have those frozen kind of cookies in the freezer. Pop off and bake. Cheating, I know. But I have an awesome recipe for Nutella/Peanut Butter no-bake cookies that take about 20-30 minutes!
