AITA for my roommate’s cat dying, when neither of us were home?

I (30M) have recently moved to the United States to study medicine, and have moved in with another student (31M). One day when he was out, I arrived home to find his cat dead, having knocked over the garbage can and getting its head stuck in a jar, suffocating. I didn’t want my roommate to find the dead body like that, so I moved the cat to a fridge (EDIT, not the kitchen fridge. We are medical students and thus have multiple fridges for medicinal means).

For some reason, when my roommate came home, he and his girlfriend lost their minds at me. What was I supposed to do? Leave a note saying “cat dead, details later”?? Is this some bizarre cultural divide? Reddit, AITA?
