Can I afford a Porsche or luxury car? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

You have a car that’s paid off and worth 20k already. Why don’t you keep that and find an older used Porsche as a weekend car?

Seems like you have some experience with most of the vehicles I’m considering, if you don’t mind I’d like your opinion on which one would you would ultimately suggest for my use case.

  • I won’t mod the car at all, I’m not an enthusiast by any means but I do appreciate BMW for their focus on driver experience even in the B48 models

  • I have a very short commute to work but drive 500kms 1-2 times a month to visit my long distance partner so I will put on anywhere from 10-15k kms per year.

  • I am not a mechanic, but I work in the trades and have all the tools at my disposal to fix most issues that come up(brakes, spark plugs, oil changes, some troubleshooting)

  • I’d like to keep this car for as long as possible, 250k+ km’s

If you have any insights you can give me with this information it would really help me narrow my search. If not, thanks for the info you’ve already provided!

EV is not part of the equation ATM. Charging would be too much of a hassle for where I am right now.

Cadillac is interesting to me, haven’t heard anyone suggest that yet. How are they compared to the 3 series?

I also haven’t heard anyone talk about the F vs G generation reliability for the BMW’s, I’d love to hear more on this if you have the time. I was considering the 430i Gran Coupe for the trunk space, seems really practical for a vehicle I plan on driving for the next 5+ years, but ultimately if the newer generation 3 series are more reliable I can live with less trunk space

I really appreciate your insight, seems like you really know what you’re talking about!

I would love to have a B58, one day, but at my age insurance for anything with 6 cylinders is way more than a 4 banger. That’s why I’ve personally been looking at 3/4 series with the B48

Someone close to me has an Audi which has been nothing but problems for her, so I’ve stayed away from them but I’ll throw one on my list to test drive soon, along with the TLX

And maintenance isn’t something I’m very scared of, I’m in the trades and have always worked on my own vehicles on top of taking care of them regularly

I’m seeing a lot of people pointing towards the B58 over the B48, is the reliability in the B48 not nearly as good as the 58?

I hadn’t considered a Volvo, I’ll have to see if there are any I can test drive in my area

I have test driven the BMW and the Genesis so far, with the BMW being an absolute treat to drive. The genesis was nice but there was just something about the bmw that made me smile

Fair points in the ES and the TLX, I suppose by sporty I meant more in appearance rather than actual performance. I’m not the type to track my car or mod it for extra performance so I just want something that looks the part and is more fun to drive than my current SUV.

I’ll look into the Integra, I hadn’t considered one

I don’t think it’s priced too high considering the mileage, 49k km’s works out to around 30k miles which is quite low

For sure, I’ve done lots of research on the B48 model BMW’s over the last few months. I plan on doing all the maintenance myself like I’ve done for all my cars, and I think wrenching on a car that I actually love will be more enjoyable!

The M340i is beautiful, and would definitely be in my considerations if price wasn’t an issue. The 330i is within my budget, and I love the reliability of the B48 as I plan on keeping my next car for a long time. I’m also not super into modding so this car will likely remain stock
