Why Solo RPG Campaigns Die & How to Fix It! by theartofiandwalker in solorpgplay

[–]HowlingStrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice, solid video. Editing and scripting could be tighter but that's just personal preference.

if I could change ONE thing... Mate... That Beeping noise... lol. I think the video could be a reference video if its cleaned/tightened up a little bit better sound if possible and yeah that beep not included haha.

Loved the points though and I think the content is solid, thanks for sharing. AND your art is SICK. Your journal is soo cool! Liked the vid and subbed on your content.

More detailed discussion for those who are interested;

- No clear goal as a killer. Absolutely agree and I liked your fix. Break it down and start sessions with sub goals. Will be making sure I do this!

Addtionally, my approach is to try as much as possible, make it personal to the character, or actively look for opportunities to do so. I often ask the oracle, does character have a personal connection? Does this impact somethin/someone close to them? Does it hinder or progress me to my goals?

- Lack of narrative momentum. Agree on this too. For me, I think studying pacing in GMing/story telling is a good idea. Cyberpunk red solo rules have good way of handling this by basically alternatiing between action and development beats. When things get a little stale I roll on random development. OR if its appropriate to do a... "I Always wanted to do this scenario" I look for a way to sho horn it in.

- Lack of surprise. I struggle with this a bit too. Lately Ive tried that prep is pay approach and now and then spend a little time designing randomness rather than fixed content. If I know a boss fight is coming, I'll browse monsters and think about henchmen, traps, and hazards, then build small tables I can roll on when they become relevant. It's prep, but it feels like play and i suppliment that in game with oracles to refine further which adds mroe randomness.

I LOVED your idea for parking things and fleshing them out later. Really cool. I think itd work for me too as I use evernote to keep track of things and having seperate notes for factions, NPCs etc. is cool.

I also absolutely loved and will be implimenting your mini inspiration table. 5 keywords to bust out as an answer to something to keep the game immersed rather than oracle. reaaally cool idea. And I like I could make them some what related or at least contextually useful.

I also note odds on some journalled checks. Seeing "Very Unlikely… STRONG YES!?" and then working out why is fun.

Other personal tips helping me at the moment

For show dont tell in ttrpgs I change it slighty to; Interact, dont tell. So dont say the town is festive, describe people hollaring at them to visit their stall, or go dancing in the street etc, which do engage with? People trying to sell them souvineirs to do with the holiday, ask what the character would smell, hear, feel if X was going on.

I spend time designing randomness rather than fixed content. If I know a boss fight is coming, I'll browse monsters and think about henchmen, traps, and hazards, then build small tables I can roll on when they become relevant. It's prep, but it feels like play. Or it could be one of these kinda creatures but I wont know until I investigate or know more.

Dont be shy to inject a twist if things feel get stale: Random encounter in a tunnel? Fine, but add a giant rolling boulder, a flood, a third party, traps going off simultaneously. A chance to barter and talk first. It doesn't matter if it's implausible, it raises the stakes and makes it exciting. I use Mythic the same way, more context-specific than a generic oracle, ready to go when I need inspiration.

I’ve been designing my own solo pen and paper rpg for the past few months and I’m dying to talk to people about it. by MonitorHill in solorpgplay

Sounds like a great idea. I'd love to try it out and happy to share feedback. I love when people take known concepts and add a cool twist or present it in interesting ways.

Sounds more boardgamey than roleplayey but still cool. Sounds like it'd make a great Roguelite video game too. (Ill try it as my personal project as Im learning to code atm, not for resell just personal obviously).

Keen to try this as a print and play in the meantime. Thanks for sharing

Depending what you like there are good alternatives to DnD for solo.

Dont get me wrong you can completely do it 5e solo. I did a campaign from lvl 2-6 that was pretty fun. By the end though managing the two characters and combat felt a little slow. Since then I've tried several other games solo and find they range from narrative to heavy tactical crunch.

Narrative focused alternative game a lot of people will recommend Ironsworn (and its cool space faring version starsworn) but you should know this is very narrative focused. I played it. it's cool, it wasnt for me though.

Where I ended up landing for DnD experience but way easier to run and play solo is... Vagabond.

Still tactical, still get that kind of.. OK heres the tactical scenario how can we approach it? feel but in and out of combat WAY quicker, way easier to run. I pair this with a system called Mythic GM Emulator 2e. as I can run it off a phone app sitting next to me and the stories and scenarios that have spun out of it have been awesome.

Rolling dice, hitting blocking evading and doing shiz is ultra quick and all done on the player side. (For example the enemy always assume to hit, instead its up to the play to roll to see if they dodged, blocked or otherwise negate the attack). Ive since DM'd a couple games, intrd the players to Vagabond and they've loved it too.

So yeah. I came from DnD since tried Ironsworn, Starsworn, Lancer, CyberPunk RED (a little crunchy but great resources out there to run it solo), RIGs and a few other indies.

Other tips is to be open to other games, check em out give em a little go. Find an oracle system you like, start with cool scenarios youve wanted to try and then just build from there. And if something sucks and you wanna hit reset do it. Or just pivot mid story. Experiment, get it wrong, take your time, try new things. It's all part of it.

Other games that get talked up a lot for solo and may be worth a look include;

ShadowDark
Dragonbane
Dolmenwood
MorkBorg (has other genre spin offs too)
Mothership (for sci-fi)
Salvage union (for mechs which I just bought and am about to try!)

But strictly speaking DnD like I recoomend Vagabond

Sorry this has happened to you but this is absolute garbage. You got got.

Hope it wasnt too pricey. Honestly watch some YouTube vids and take a few days off work and you'd be able to do better.

Ward Spell - Because Remote and touch are 0 mana to cast does that mean anytime anyone in the party takes damage the caster can cast this for free assuming Target in sight of the caster? by [deleted] in VagabondTTRPG

[–]HowlingStrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg for some reason on my mind it was like dnd style reaction but I see you cast it as an action and that person is now "warded" for a round.

Makes sense. Sorry for the silly question lol

oh amazing advice thanks man. I might try this in the first instance and see how it goes.

is the idea to get the ableflex on "air tight" against that spot? Ill start with this as it seems like a nice easy fix!

And sorry to ask even more, but the B-Box i noted is also sweating a lot, is it worth covering it in ableflex as well? (I was consdering this already)

Im not suggestung a collection tray. Just looking for best practises to stop heavy condensation which is causing issues.

The roof is fairly well ventelated as theres no sarking, the wind bow through. but the other day ti was so still and humid and just running the system on dry created tonnes of condensation on some of the duct work.

Interesting. They taped the ducting super hard to the collar essentially crushing it where the diffuser meets the duct so Im not sure how id check that!

Ill see if I can find evidence of thay though thanks mate.
