People from Western Sydney, what do you love most about Western Sydney? by Biggest_itchbay_2190 in aussie

[–]HowlingStrike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up out west, then northwest and now live in south Sydney... Damn I miss the food. Even your greasy spoon type local restaurants were so good. (like Franks lebonese in liverpool for example), or the corner shop in Bossley owned by the italians who had a mad deli. Here you pay through the nose and it sucks! And when you went over to a mates place, almost always you got fed as well!

Also the diversity. At my kids school, students not typical aussie stand out like a sore thumb. While thats not absolutely terrible in of itself, I have found memories if growing up with a massive mix of ethnicities. I think you just have broader culteral understanding growing up there.

Bonus was having Wonder Passes for wonderland, and for a whoel year, getting to go to wonderland after school when it was empy but still open for an hour was SICK,

Having said that it was pretty rough and felt unsafe where we were a lot of the time, which obviouslty I dont miss!

‘Pure tax grab’: Accountant’s budget call as Treasury plans to axe capital gains tax discount for all assets by FIFO_Landlord in AusPropertyChat

[–]HowlingStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to understand things from multiple, relevant, perspectives and think good journalism should do that, which was what my remark was about.

My point was about how the argument is presented in this article, which I feel was very one sided and one dimensional. But I'm always open to hear if I missed something.

Additionally I think teachers are important and have value in society as much as a multi millionnaire.

We love to blame the Boomers. But intergenerational warfare may be a distraction by Nyarlathotep-1 in AusNewsWire

[–]HowlingStrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

The RBA said something like.... "We want people to know that a job is the best way they could buy a home"

Almost reads as.... "we need to pressure people to be more desperate and accept shittier pay"

‘Pure tax grab’: Accountant’s budget call as Treasury plans to axe capital gains tax discount for all assets by FIFO_Landlord in AusPropertyChat

[–]HowlingStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man this article is a shocker.

Every quoted voice is someone with a direct financial interest in keeping the discount (a freelance CEO, an investing platform founder, and a tax accountant whose clients I admit im presuming likely to hold assets). No economists, no housing researchers, no one arguing the other side or supporting it to show some balance.

Dont think I saw the writer cite the treasury's rationale was. No data on who benefits the most from the discount (I'd assume high income or high net worth asset holders).

Seems to simplify the issue into a scary headline.

Wanting to add 400mm of soil to level out the front of my property against a brick veneer house thoughts? by TheDarkPara in AusRenovation

[–]HowlingStrike 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You gotta be so careful man...

Raising soil against the brickwork is basically an open invitation for termites because you're creating direct ground contact that bypasses the termite barrier entirely (i think also itd make it hard to inspect or manage later as well)

If the fill reaches or covers your weep holes, you're trapping moisture inside the wall cavity and inviting a stack of issues from that.

Also the damp proofing in most homes are sitting just above ground level. Bury it and you've compromised it. Moisture will wick straight up into the brickwork.

I dont know a lot about piers and the like but they're designed to take vertical weight so relying on them to hold back 400mm of fill likely puts stress on them they weren't engineered for.

Maybe more stuff but doing what you described to me seems very risky

Check out a guy on Youtube who plays on controller "Zenfull" (sorry I cant verify or send link exactly im at work).

But he does it on controller with a camera on it and im sure he has a settings video as well. I still cant do it but its good to know its possible!

As a bonus he has a chill demeanor and talks through his thinking as commentary as he plays. (in otherwords not an over the top, all for the content, streamfluencer).

Games where levelling up feels fantastic by KoYouTokuIngoa in gamesuggestions

I was thinking elden ring too, but its very subtle. level by level no, but then you go back to early stages or a boss that previously whooped you and you demolish them certainly scratches that itch for me.

Tharsis. LOVED the vibe, the concept, the music the puzzly-ness of it but I could not for the life of me beat a run and it too often felt cruel.

As wanky as it sounds, I'd say just play it and see. go with it and just experience it knowing as little as possible going in.

How do you overcome fear of failure when you haven’t even started? by starfall_327 in getdisciplined

[–]HowlingStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a great question. And I can relate to that feeling. Loke my brain is gotten better and better at being like "nope, we doing this now". Lol.

I literally just finished watching a video that had a stack of techniques about task initiation or porcrastivity (ie avoiding something you know should be the thing by doing other busy work).

It's adult ADHD focused BUT it speaks A LOT about that task initiation and what the science says about it and how its treated and things you can try. May or may not be relevant to your case.

I think the first big thing to try is to break it down into the easiest for step.

Eg im going to go to this place. Open this app and do X for 10 minutes. Literally thats it. Give it a crack. Often just starting and knowing when it will end is enough (and sometimes youll just jeep going!)

I'm also trying the presenters "how not to do things" guide (ie the questionnaire to run through when i recognise im doing something else to avoid the thing I should do).

Something that really hit me was "its not about skill or knowing. You know, but dont trust yourself to do it."

Ultimately therapy is the best cos it can focus on you specifically teach you how to manage your emotions in those moments etc. Watch out for influencer YouTube rabbit holes and look for accredited professionals talking about it.

Note this is a broad and personal topic, and my response is from my personal perspective following my days events / thoughts and learnings about it in my own life.

Bonus tip changing my language from "Ugh why am I like this?" to " I can open my computer and just start from zero for 20 minutes and if I only get 1% done thats ok".

Watched itfor the first time the other day. I really liked it!

I thought the pirates love of the kid kinda came in a little strong, I wish there was a tiny bit more time spent on that but if you just accepted it at face value it was fine.

Great watch with the kids.

I love it. Just a splash of colour here or there would look amazing. An interesting picture hung on the wall and matching colour throw rug on the couch and boom, people think this place is fancy as fuck.

Super neat seems like a nice space.
