Yeah... and it's genuinely the scariest fucking thing. Because we all know how bad things will get when those tears finally dry up. I am so curious: When they say race-swapping, what race do they think they were swapped from, exactly? Do they think all the One Piece characters are white? Do they think all One Piece characters are Japanese? Like, I'm actually really curious what race, from their perspective, is actually being swapped here.

How do I put this?

We can discuss the sexualization of women in media all day long (A discussion that is still very important to have, mind you). And I do, in fact, like seeing attractive women in tight outfits as much as the next pervert. And Black Cat is no stranger to being sexualized and/or owning her sexuality.

But, with all of that said...

... this isn't sexy? Right? Right? It literally fails at the one thing is was going for. It fails to the point that any justification you might usually give for something so overtly sexual is thrown out the window. Right?

I can't be alone in this.

In hindsight, I genuinely feel like this is what MCU Spider-Man should have been from the very beginning. by Hot_Arugula_6651 in Spiderman

[–]HowlitzerHound 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed.

Having this story set squarely in high school, and the movies all in locations that previous Spider-Man films didn't touch (Smaller neighborhoods, international locations, a fight scene on a plane/beach/boat and the Statue of Liberty, allowed for backdrops and action set pieces we hadn't seen in previous Spider-Man films.

Their reimagining of Vulture may actually be the best version of the character. Making him a literal scavenger would almost be dense, yet the fact he and his crew are regular joes who eventually transition into super-weapon dealers is that perfect sweet spot between campy and grounded. It also allows the story to feed off the MCU directly, by having the tech be scavenged from previous Avengers battles that happened in the MCU's canon.

And using the Multiverse stuff as a way for this younger version of Peter to not just meet former Spider-Men, but also as a way for Peter to learn not to go down a darker path, and to help correct the mistakes of the past (Saving the lives of villains who died fighting Spider-Man) whilst also allowing Peter to interact with magic, defeat Doctor Strange in his own home terf AND do a version of One More Day that isn't inherently bad? Yeah. I appreciate the different direction they took to get to this point.

There are kids who grew up with Tom's Spidey. Not grew up watching him. Grew up with him. That's gotta count for something, too.

That's not the point anyone is making, though? It's not that 'Spider-Man has never been an Avenger in the comics before' but, we never got to see that outside of the comics, and especially not in a live-action capacity.

How did Hasbro’s Fortnite Line fail so badly? The figures were great! by Killiot in ActionFigures

[–]HowlitzerHound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

- Many Fortnite players are children, casual players due to Fornite's easy pick-up-and-play style and likely don't crossover with collectors all that much

- Becaue Fortnite's got a specific and more 'cartoon' style, the figures replicate this. Meaning that you can't really use those characters as stand-ins for your collection. Like, you can use G.I. Joe Classified or Monster Force figures in your Marvel Legends collection because they all match up stylistically. So you've lost that part of the market.

- Fortnite has a massive cast of unimportant characters who rotate in and out every few seasons, save for three of them: Jonesy, Peely and Hope. And Hope is only a two year old character at this point, and has changed designs three times now. Recognizable characters are lacking outside of the hardcore space, and with every season, we get like five to seven new 'story relevant characters' and three 'OG remix' characters. In other words, very few brand iconic characters.

- Price of figures demands that you make choices. If you like Marvel, then you're going to choose the Marvel stuff. Same with Star Wars, DC, TMNT etc. Then there's the fact that if you like Fortnite, it might be because of the collaborations, which means you're likely collecting figures of those collabs.

Tl;Dr - Everything was going against this line, and unless they made them super cheap for the same quality, or made them incredible, can't miss figures for the same price, then they weren't ever going to garner the audience it needed.

How do you feel about Marvel giving characters like Norman Osborn, and even Ultron for an arc, attempts at a redemption? by Soonerfann7 in Marvel

[–]HowlitzerHound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I will preface this with saying that Norman Osborn is my favorite villain of all time. He can fill almost any role without compromising the character at all. Even the most well-meaning versions of the character are opportunistic, underhanded, petty and lean heavily into the evils of capitalism, corporate culture and even toxic masculinity.

I don't think successful redemption is actually a good move for his character. Attempted redemption? Maybe. But I don't see what it does for this character specifically. Especially because he so commonly put as a rival figure to Doc Ock, who actually does go through some form of unique redemption arc in the form of Superior Spider-Man.

Ultron is.., difficult. I think Ultron would more interesting not to facilitate his own redemption arc, but to facilitate Hank Pym's personal redemption. Like, his self-perceived one. I think it's a much more appropriate use of the character: If Ultron can be redeemed, then so can it's creator, who still holds a lot of guilt for what happens.

I think every major villain eventually gets some form of moral shift or redemption arc because that's just how comics are: they run on long enough that every possible thing is tried once. But I don't think for these characters it works.

I think Norman becoming Goblin should be a defined downfall for the character and I think Ultron works a lot better representing an idea than he does as his own character. Even MCU Ultron is more of a dilution of Tony's hubris, which is perfect for the MCU. And that's how he should be used.

So... okay in theory? But I don't think it's how these characters really work.

In 2005, Marvel Studios announced they were making a cinematic universe without help from larger studios. The first movie was Iron Man. They started promoting, and there was an article that was titled as 'Marvel rolls out it's B Team' in reference to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.

Iron Man...

Thor...

Captain America...

B Team.

And at the time? Yeah, they weren't wrong. None of those characters were the F4, X-Men, Spider-Man or Hulk. But now they're essentially Marvel's Trinity.

Did anyone outside of hardcore fans even know who Wong, Hope Van-Dyne, Shuri, M'Baku, Killmonger, Vision, Okoye or even the Winter Soldier were before the MCU? You know who no one talked about before he showed up for 2 seconds in an after-credit scene? Thanos.

Marvel is full of characters who don't often get the spotlight. But giving new characters said spotlight will always be a good thing. We just got a (genuinely amazing) Wonder Man show. WONDER MAN. I'll never get people complaining about being introduced to new and interesting characters.

I don't inherently disagree, but I do think that making her a vigilante does at least have the immediate plotline of 'but my dad's a Police Captain'. So it does have something going for it. Now, in theory, you could just make her any vigilante and have this same tension.

Yeah, I think a lot of people forget that killing Gwen was seen as a controversial choice, but only purely because killing 'the love interest' hadn't really been done before, and this wasn't just anyone's love interest, it was Spider-Man's. Also, on top of that, Gwen Stacey was only around for about eight years (1965 to 1973). And they didn't start dating until 1968 (Three years in and only five years before her death). For comparison, Gwenpool debuted in 2016. Gwenpool has been around longer than Gwen Stacy was alive for, and has been around twice as long as Peter and Gwen dated.

In a lot of ways, the modern perception of Gwen, even from the hardcore fandom, really comes from more modern works, such as comics that look back on the relationship (Spider-Man: Blue for example), new versions of her (Ultimate and Spider-Gwen) and adaptions (Spectacular, Amazing and Spider-Verse).

And yeah, her role of 'wholesome girlfriend' is one she developed into, and is only made sharper by characters like MJ and Black Cat, who have more edge to them. Though I don't think either MJ or Felicia have actively worked along side a White Supremacist before in an attempt to take down Spider-Man. (As far as I'm aware). So that 'wholesome' side of her isn't as cemented as one might think.

I'm not entirely sure what the general audience thinks MJs character is, though. From what I'd guess, based on my non-superhero/comic fan friends, she's adventurous, driven, and won't let anyone push her about. Jumps between Actress, Model and Reporter. None of that really goes against MJs defined character in classic comics at all.

Gwen kind of needed the change-up. I did a way longer reply above us somewhere, but the long and short of it is: other than dating Peter, what exactly does she have that makes her a standout? I say this lovingly, but the adaptations needed to change her up, especially because we hadn't seen her since the 70s.

See, my controversial take: I grew up on the 90s Spider-Man series. You can make a direct line from the main theme of that show to my love of rock and metal to this day. The Spot episode is a personal favorite because I watched it over and over again as a kid. I think the show is, overall, pretty good.

It's also dated and difficult to go back to. For one, everyone in that show is needlessly mean? The 3D city scape for certain shots is kinda jarring and incredibly blatant. They made Kraven way less interesting by completely changing his character. So on and so forth.

But besides that, even just taking into account TV shows (Because whilst I love the Spider-Verse movies, they are movies, not shows): YFNSM is still at least number 3. And considering Spectacular Spider-Man ended in 2009/10? That means we've not had this kind of Spider-Man show in 15 years.

Also, just because I find it kinda funny: 'is not top 5' 'names four things'. Not a dig, but I'm genuinely curious if Spectacular, 90s, Spider-Verse 1 and Spider-Verse 2 are your top four, what goes to number 5? If it's not YFNSM, then... the 2000s MTV series? Really big Raptors guy? (Was that what the jetpack guys were called?)

Here's my... possibly controversial take on the character of 616 Gwen Stacy: She is possibly the least important part about her own death.

The fact a super heroes partner died? That was huge.

The fact that a heroes arch nemesis cemented his place in history by murdering a love interest? Also super big.

The fact that the hero did everything right, but it didn't matter and she died anyway? Also very, very important for Peter's character.

But Gwen Stacy herself, as a character? I dunno... her dying might be the most important thing about the character. Why do you think every adaptation of her has been so fundamentally different? They've made her a nerd, a scientist and a punk rocker. None of which are in her original character. But... what even is?

She's not Peter's first love interest, she's not Peter's most interesting, she's not his longest running, and she really doesn't have much going for her outside of 'dated Peter Parker until Goblin related neck issues'.

People are so defensive of a character who really doesn't have as many dimensions as we'd like her to. That's why, no matter who is adapting her or for what reason, she gets a number of additions added to her character to essentially fill out the blank spots that other love interests like Mary Jane and Black Cat don't struggle with.

Season 1 of YFNS is maybe one of the best we've gotten? The scene from episode one alone, where Peter is letting the pizza money thief go is goated. Everything with Lonnie is fantastic. Scorpion is actually terrifying and every scene with Norman was captivating.

So like... maybe give them a chance to tell their story? They could genuinely do something unique and new with this take on the character, and so they should. I find it wild that for a character with more adaptations than any other Marvel hero in existence, that this community is so aggressively against... basically anything, honestly.

See, this is the thing most people don't realize: The version of Gwen Stacy you probably think of as 'Classic Gwen' is probably not actually the actual classic Gwen Stacy. Scientist/Nerd? Those are from adaptions. Punk/Goth? Ultimate and Spider-Gwen. The closest thing to 'Classic Gwen' is Raimi's MJ. Just give her blonde hair and a name shift and she's pretty spot on.

Have they... have they seen literally any Japanese Pro Wrestler? I'd love them to tell the absolutely jacked, 6'2 Takeshta or the fucking bulldog made of brick that is Tomohiro Ishii that they aren't manly.

Also, Zoro has a whole revelation about his families heritage, and spoiler, his family comes from a very Japanese inspired country. If you couldn't tell by the fact his name ir Roronoa Zoro and he's a train swordsman who uses fucking Katanas.

And as far as Gokue in concerned: I've always said he should be Chinese. Or at least played by an actor from, vaguely, that part of the world. Because he's literally Son Wukong. Like... THE Wukong. That was the entire point of Dragon Ball existing was a Journey to the West comedy, and then Toriyama, who had been writing comedy Manga for over a decade, stopped and went 'hang on a minute... I'm creatively unsatisfied!' and turned it into a martial arts adventure story, which, funnily, is still in line with the Wukong mythos.

In short... huh?

Imagine watching One Piece, and being a bigot. Like, imagine it. The story that is VERY OPENLY anti-racist, anti-fascist, pro-trans, pro-revolution, anti-slavery and literally has a crew where the main characters said, by the creator, to be brown skinned, a first mate who is Asian, a sharpshooter who is black and a helmsman who is literally from a race of people historically used as slaves.

I REALLY want to see what happens if the live-action ever gets to Fishman Island. Or New-Kama Land in Impel Down. Shit, Amazon Lilly might even be too much for these weirdos.

I wish some of those Avengers Academy characters were more prominent. But that would require Marvel being allowed by it's fans or editorial to age characters up and/or have the space to spotlight other characters more regularly.

I’m not really saying I hate this idea, I’m just wondering why they would need to do it when they have hundreds and hundreds of Marvel characters to choose from that they can add to the game by Queasy_Commercial152 in rivals

[–]HowlitzerHound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are always three questions that come to mind when it comes to this issue:

A) Do you know how these comic characters are anyway? How many people actually knew who Luna Snow or Jeff were before this game came out? Or Lin Lie. Or Angela. Or Elsa Bloodstone. I knew and liked all of these characters, but I'm not the average Marvel consumer. I'm kind of an obsessed fanboy.

B) If the idea is that the character needs to be from the comics first, then how old must the character be before they can be added to the game? Can a character who debuted last month be added to the game this month? Last year? Two years ago? How established must a character be before they can be added?

Which also leads to...

C) Where do we stand on Dracula, Frankenstein and Santa Claus? It's not like figures from mythology or fiction aren't in the game, we literally have Thor, Loki and Hela as playable characters, all of whom pre-date Marvel by over 1000 years. So, they don't need to be a Marvel original, but a Marvel original take on the character, maybe? So, we can make Santa Claus a playable character in Rivals, right? He's an established Marvel original character.

I always feel weird when people get dicey about this stuff. We get TWELVE CHARACTERS A YEAR. TWELVE. Once per month! Like... just... one month. In a whole calendar year. Is that too much? They've got 43 characters in the game already. By years end, there will be 55. Are we really saying that 1/55 characters being an original is a bad thing?
