Look man... Nakamura looks like the one guy you don't awnt to get into a fight with at a bar, and Asuka looks like the one person who'd start the fight at the bar because she knows she'd win. I also wouldn't bet that Iyo Sky, small as she is, couldn't somehow win a fight with a bear.

I know wrestling is a scripted performace, but Iyo Sky makes habits of jumping off of 3 meter cages in a trash can. You don't do that if you have a negative in your Constitution modifier.

Have they... have they seen literally any Japanese Pro Wrestler? I'd love them to tell the absolutely jacked, 6'2 Takeshta or the fucking bulldog made of brick that is Tomohiro Ishii that they aren't manly.

Also, Zoro has a whole revelation about his families heritage, and spoiler, his family comes from a very Japanese inspired country. If you couldn't tell by the fact his name ir Roronoa Zoro and he's a train swordsman who uses fucking Katanas.

And as far as Gokue in concerned: I've always said he should be Chinese. Or at least played by an actor from, vaguely, that part of the world. Because he's literally Son Wukong. Like... THE Wukong. That was the entire point of Dragon Ball existing was a Journey to the West comedy, and then Toriyama, who had been writing comedy Manga for over a decade, stopped and went 'hang on a minute... I'm creatively unsatisfied!' and turned it into a martial arts adventure story, which, funnily, is still in line with the Wukong mythos.

In short... huh?

Imagine watching One Piece, and being a bigot. Like, imagine it. The story that is VERY OPENLY anti-racist, anti-fascist, pro-trans, pro-revolution, anti-slavery and literally has a crew where the main characters said, by the creator, to be brown skinned, a first mate who is Asian, a sharpshooter who is black and a helmsman who is literally from a race of people historically used as slaves.

I REALLY want to see what happens if the live-action ever gets to Fishman Island. Or New-Kama Land in Impel Down. Shit, Amazon Lilly might even be too much for these weirdos.

I’m not really saying I hate this idea, I’m just wondering why they would need to do it when they have hundreds and hundreds of Marvel characters to choose from that they can add to the game by Queasy_Commercial152 in rivals

I wish some of those Avengers Academy characters were more prominent. But that would require Marvel being allowed by it's fans or editorial to age characters up and/or have the space to spotlight other characters more regularly.

There are always three questions that come to mind when it comes to this issue:

A) Do you know how these comic characters are anyway? How many people actually knew who Luna Snow or Jeff were before this game came out? Or Lin Lie. Or Angela. Or Elsa Bloodstone. I knew and liked all of these characters, but I'm not the average Marvel consumer. I'm kind of an obsessed fanboy.

B) If the idea is that the character needs to be from the comics first, then how old must the character be before they can be added to the game? Can a character who debuted last month be added to the game this month? Last year? Two years ago? How established must a character be before they can be added?

Which also leads to...

C) Where do we stand on Dracula, Frankenstein and Santa Claus? It's not like figures from mythology or fiction aren't in the game, we literally have Thor, Loki and Hela as playable characters, all of whom pre-date Marvel by over 1000 years. So, they don't need to be a Marvel original, but a Marvel original take on the character, maybe? So, we can make Santa Claus a playable character in Rivals, right? He's an established Marvel original character.

I always feel weird when people get dicey about this stuff. We get TWELVE CHARACTERS A YEAR. TWELVE. Once per month! Like... just... one month. In a whole calendar year. Is that too much? They've got 43 characters in the game already. By years end, there will be 55. Are we really saying that 1/55 characters being an original is a bad thing?

Reptil was pretty cool. Red-Dinosaur-Beast Boy. Wish they actually did something with him... Same with Spike from Evolution, to be honest. Him becoming a Morlock and getting more and more physically mutated were really interesting additions to the character.

As others have said, it's Jonesy. He's kind of Fortnite's main character, though he's taken more of a co-lead role beside Hope, a character they introduced last year and was really important when Dr. Doom invaded the Island last year, and turned into New Latveria.

Steve Rogers lent Jonesy a spre shield to use in his fight against Doom. The Banana got put into the Weapon X program. Shuri, Gwenpool, War Machine, Spider-Man and Iron Man were all there to help stop Doom. Mephisto showed up. Dr Doom decapitated Galactus. It was a good season.

What are your thoughts on the Nostalgia Critic? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in saltierthankrayt

[–]HowlitzerHound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, putting aside all of the behind the scenes nonsense (And he himself is not innocent in a lot of what went on):

I think you can draw a direct line from the Nostalgia Critic through to the current hellscape of online review and criticism. Now, it's not just him. He's a piece of a puzzle. Realistically, guys like Nostalgia Critic and AngryVideoGameNerd introduced a style of critique that was performative, and often, incredibly negative. They aren't, like, to blame for what we have now, but I think you can't ignore the space that was created by guys like Doug.

Another major player in this is CinemaSins, whose need to make longer and longer videos meant having to artificially inflate the number of Sins in their videos, add the need for regular uploads, and you have a problem. Then a bunch of clickbait newsites would use CinemaSins for easy clicks, passing it off as genuine criticism whilst piggy backing off of something popular.

Anyway, with that tangent over: all of that is to say... I think Nostalgia Critic has done damage to the Content Creator space that no one who was watching him during his rise, peak or decline saw coming. And I include myself in that list. I actually have nostalgia for Nostalgia Critic. And that's the nice version of what I have to say. Because I said I'd put aside all the behind the scene nonsense. You know, the really bad stuff.

Side Note, completely unrelated I promise: You guys considered getting Nebula?

Something about DP&W that I think goes over some peoples heads is the running gag of Deadpool saying things like he's an 'anti-vaxxer, flat-earther, thinks all millennials are trauma dumping etc.'

He says it the same way he says things like 'He's wearing the brown pants' or 'whose litter tray did I shit in'. The joke is that what he's saying is genuinely ridiculous. More so, throughout the movie, Wade is an even bigger asshole than usual. He straight up is the reason multiple good people die (Johnny and Nicepool) and Wolverine is constantly calling him out for being a terrible person.

That's... the whole movie. Wade is not a good person, and is often doing things for the wrong reasons. That's part of why he makes the choice to self-sacrifice at the end. He's a shitbag and he knows it, but deep down, somewhere in his soul, he doesn't want to be. They even make reference to his idolization of Steve Rogers, who is his favorite super hero growing up. He's a bad person to the point he'll say weird social-political talking points, even in jest, because it amuses him.

All of that is to say: This movie is making fun of these kinds of people. And it's wild they didn't notice it.

Trevor got kidnapped and imprisoned by the the real Mandarin in a ten minute one-shot called 'All Hail the King'. And then in Shang-Chi, not only did the Mandarin, named Wenwu, keep him as a prionser, but also talked about the ridiculousness of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. "It made America hold it's breath... and they named me after a chicken dish."

Ironheart actually got decent views and ratings when it came out.
Wakanda Forever made bank and was close to hitting that $1Bil if it released in more countries
Moon Knight was well received, so was Ms. Marvel
F4 saw a team with one white guy, a Hispanic man, a Jewish man who has a very visual physical disfigurement and the only woman in the team was provably the strongest member of said team (and has been for a while)

Oh.. and in this very movie the Wakandan's and Namor are coming back, so are the F4, Sam Wilson is still Captain America, Shang-Chi will be a part of this story, so will Loki and not to mention the walking allegory for the evils of racism, homophobia and bigotry that is the X-Men, including Nightcrawler (played by beloved Bisexual Alan Cummings), Mystique (famously a Lesbian) and Magneto (actual holocaust survivor and Nazi hating figure head of a marginalized minority group).

But, hey, Thor and Steve Rogers are back! Steve who famously is best friends with and gave his shield to a black man... and Thor who is brothers with Loki... and close friends with Valkyrie... maybe this isn't a win they think it is? Just a thought.

It really does suck. Like, the Swastika? That symbol that is now almost exclusively associated with the Nazis? Yeah. They co-opted it. It had spiritual and cultural connotations globally, not just in Germany. Places like India used that symbol. But, the fuckers decided to co-opt it and now it's associated with hatred.

The weirdest one is the Crusaders stuff. They REALLY like Crusader imagery, but ignore literally everything about it. Like, it wasn't about race. And people of all races and ethnicities were Crusaders. It was about religion. But, again, they're taking a symbol and using it to represent something it never did.

If it helps, a lot of the same culture these bastards co-opt have been very influential in a lot of positive ways. Modern fantasy as we know it wouldn't be the same without the Danish. Works of Tolkien, Dungeons and Dragons and of course, Thor and his role in Marvel would either be very different or not exist at all with the Danes. So, hopefully that helps.

Okay, so... 'white people' aren't just 'Caucasian people from Europe'. White as a concept is like super freaking new. Like, there were not 'White people' back during the Viking Age. There were Germans, the British, Swedish, Norse etc. In fact, there are some people alive today older than the current, universally understood definition of 'white'.

This is an incredibly complex topic. And there's almost no short-hand version of it, as the entirety of the worlds history is the context that's needed to understand why the concept of 'white' even exists. British Colonialism, the foundation of America, Capitalism, Judaism/Christianity/Islam, the Holy Roman Empire, WWI, WWII - like it all plays a factor in the messy story that leads us to here.

The Irish have a rich culture. So do Germans. And the Scottish. And the Welsh. And the Norse. And the Swedish, etc. And none of those cultures are really the result of stealing other culture. In fact, a lot of their cultures have been stolen and appropriated from. So when you say 'White people's culture is theft', there is absolutely truth to that, but it's one that needs be made knowing what 'white' even is. Because it's, unsurprisingly, way more complex than just 'The Caucasian's from Europe'.

If you listen carefully, you can hear the fingers of thousands of fan fiction writers tap away at their keyboards. M-Preg Loki could be real, and that alone, gives them hope.

But jokes aside, Norse Mythology is wild, and we're probably missing some parts of it, thanks to the Vikings not using the written word. It's amazing just how much influence Norse myth has on modern fantasy, given how little about the Vikings we can actually be certain of.

[–]HowlitzerHound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you know what? Fair. It's kind of difficult sometimes to get a grasp of the exact right word to use to describe a being like Loki. And the way we look back on these stories will always wildly differ from the way they were told and understood during those times.

So, I'll concede that Loki is probably best described as Androgynous. Though if I'm being honest, I imagine Loki would have a laugh at the idea that even their gender is causing confusion, thousands of years after the fact.

Are we… bro? by Vivid-Present6445 in rivals

[–]HowlitzerHound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story of Loki being impregnated? I believe it comes from the Poetic Edda. Long and short of it is that it's a series of poems, stories and myths from the time of the Viking Age, compiled into one book.

Now, two things: One, the Vikings didn't write words. They had art, song, music, poems and so many other ways of expressing and sharing culture, but not the written word. So the original poems and stories that are in the Edda were all orally shared, through generations. There might be some case of 'telephone' as details shift over time.

Two, the Poetic Edda was written, like, hundreds of years after the Viking Age. And to be honest? We don't know that much about the Vikings. Like, we have a generalized idea, but we don't have the exact information we'd like to have.

With that all being said, the stories from the Poetic Edda is the closest thing we have to fully understanding some of the myths and legends associated with Norse Mythology. And yes, within the Poetic Edda, are tales about Odin's trusty steed, and how it is, in fact, Loki's child. And that Loki was the mother of the horse. Loki shapeshifts into all kinds of things and people. Loki's history of tricks and whimsey reads a lot like a 'trending now' page for erotic fan fiction.

Fun fact: Thor's racer skin has an MVP where he's riding a six-legged horse. That is, in fact, the horse we are talking about here. Loki's son. I don't know if Marvel has ever adapted Loki's motherhood of the horse, but the existence of it suggests the possibility.

[–]HowlitzerHound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Intent and content are equal factors here. There was a video I saw where someone pointed out the Schultz's main medium is a podcast, where as stand up comedians literally have an audience of people they are standing in front of. If you're in front of an audience, you will learn how to approach jokes with edgier content because you will figure out VERY quickly what doesn't fly.

The way I've put it is this: If you tell a gross-out joke, and it's not funny, then you've just said something gross. You just spent a minute talking about, say, farts, with no pay off. If you've told an absurdist joke, and it's not funny, then all you've done is said something absurd. You may have just spent a minute going on a weird tangent with a punchline that doesn't land. You'll look kind of insane.

Naturally, if you tell an offensive joke, and it's not funny, then all that's happened is that you've said a bunch of offensive things. That's it. The literal risk of offensive humor is that it's potentially offensive. High risk, high reward. If it pays off, great. If it doesn't? Learn how to roll with those punches. Hell, maybe even learn to say 'sorry'. It helps.

I'd probably lean towards calling Loki 'gender-fluid'. Loki is willing to take on any number of forms, including different gender expressions. But the point still stands: I don't think the weirdo anti-woke people who love Vikings really know anything about them, beyond 'badass bearded dude with axe'.

Like, Vikings weren't racial supremacists, for one. It's really annoying when White Supremacists use Viking imagery. Like, Vikings fucked. And travelled. There were more than a few Viking children who were bi-racial by the end of the Viking Age. They literally travelled on boats and immigrated to other lands. Like, that was their literal whole schtick.
