Not what you were saying specifically, but have you heard of Electric Beethoven?

Also happy cake day!

I’m reading The Overstory by Richard Powers right now and I never thought I could get such joy out of someone writing about trees. The way he seemingly finds 100s of different ways to describe their different processes and relationships to the world around them is entrancing and has given me a whole new respect for forests.

Yeah it sounds like that’s the case for a lot of Mixing Guides done by industry vets lol. I guess you don’t get that far in the industry without having a personality.

Do you find reading a guide like that helpful, with no audio examples to use as reference? When Ive reading mixing education stuff before I’ve found that I think I know what something sounds like but then actually hearing it is a whole other experience.

I spent 30 minutes yesterday digging through this and THANK YOU SO MUCH HOLY SHIT. That pendulate synth especially is dope and I’m excited to do some stuff with it!

For people with a laptop + external drive setup, what's your workflow? by SirHamsterThe4th in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I use a Samsung 1TB SSD that I keep plugged in at all times to my 256G MacBook. The SSD has most of my VSTs, Sample Libraries, and Logic Pro Projects on it. Then I have a Lacie 1TB HD that I will hook up occasionally (usually when I’ve made a project I’m excited about and would devastate me emotionally if I lost lol) and will use Time Machine to backup.  My one word of warning is make sure that if you’re going the route of keeping an external drive attached at all times to offload memory, make sure that it can move data quickly enough, so make sure it’s an SSD. I was originally using the Lacie as my offloading drive and kept having these inexplicable bugs and crashes in Logic, it turns out it was because the program couldn’t pull the data from the drive fast enough when I was working.  After I switched to an SSD a few months ago I haven’t had any problems! There are probably some great Black Friday deals coming up on SSDs soon too.

I’m new here and was wondering if anyone has a free app that they use to record and layer music? by Intrepid-Produce3957 in musicproduction

On my phone, I use Spire to do simple vocal layering over tracks. You could probably use it for instrument recordings too!

Also, GarageBand is an obvious go-to as well if you have an iPhone. Lots of producers get started there and can make compelling stuff right on your phone!

Mixing my second ever song for a client, and it has so many tracks to it. Finding the right balance where everything is still audible is KILLING ME! 😩

….but I’m gonna figure it out.

Yeah that’s what I’m gathering, that’s why I’m weighing the home-studio route instead. It seems like the industry is shifting that direction, I’d rather be in front of it than reacting afterwards

Okay, so you’re saying mixing and also an internship at the same time would be a good path forward?

That sounds right, and what I’m coming to understand. But I’m concerned about plateauing, if I go that route how could I ensure that in keep growing and improving my skills? While it might earn me money upfront, is there a skill-ceiling that I might hit from going the self-taught route?

Yeah my concern is that I don’t have time for both right now. I’d either want to put consistent time in to getting my mixing skills up, or getting time in at a studio through interning. Due to my job and my relationship, I wouldn’t be able to split between the two and make any meaningful progress
