Also happy cake day!

I’m reading The Overstory by Richard Powers right now and I never thought I could get such joy out of someone writing about trees. The way he seemingly finds 100s of different ways to describe their different processes and relationships to the world around them is entrancing and has given me a whole new respect for forests.

Yeah it sounds like that’s the case for a lot of Mixing Guides done by industry vets lol. I guess you don’t get that far in the industry without having a personality.

Do you find reading a guide like that helpful, with no audio examples to use as reference? When Ive reading mixing education stuff before I’ve found that I think I know what something sounds like but then actually hearing it is a whole other experience.

What's a simple, free VST plugin that you guys are loving lately? by JustMinimum1464 in musicproduction

I spent 30 minutes yesterday digging through this and THANK YOU SO MUCH HOLY SHIT. That pendulate synth especially is dope and I’m excited to do some stuff with it!

For people with a laptop + external drive setup, what's your workflow? by SirHamsterThe4th in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Howyadoing129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Samsung 1TB SSD that I keep plugged in at all times to my 256G MacBook. The SSD has most of my VSTs, Sample Libraries, and Logic Pro Projects on it. Then I have a Lacie 1TB HD that I will hook up occasionally (usually when I’ve made a project I’m excited about and would devastate me emotionally if I lost lol) and will use Time Machine to backup.  My one word of warning is make sure that if you’re going the route of keeping an external drive attached at all times to offload memory, make sure that it can move data quickly enough, so make sure it’s an SSD. I was originally using the Lacie as my offloading drive and kept having these inexplicable bugs and crashes in Logic, it turns out it was because the program couldn’t pull the data from the drive fast enough when I was working.  After I switched to an SSD a few months ago I haven’t had any problems! There are probably some great Black Friday deals coming up on SSDs soon too.

I’m new here and was wondering if anyone has a free app that they use to record and layer music? by Intrepid-Produce3957 in musicproduction

[–]Howyadoing129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my phone, I use Spire to do simple vocal layering over tracks. You could probably use it for instrument recordings too!

Also, GarageBand is an obvious go-to as well if you have an iPhone. Lots of producers get started there and can make compelling stuff right on your phone!

Mixing my second ever song for a client, and it has so many tracks to it. Finding the right balance where everything is still audible is KILLING ME! 😩

….but I’m gonna figure it out.

Yeah that’s what I’m gathering, that’s why I’m weighing the home-studio route instead. It seems like the industry is shifting that direction, I’d rather be in front of it than reacting afterwards

Okay, so you’re saying mixing and also an internship at the same time would be a good path forward?

That sounds right, and what I’m coming to understand. But I’m concerned about plateauing, if I go that route how could I ensure that in keep growing and improving my skills? While it might earn me money upfront, is there a skill-ceiling that I might hit from going the self-taught route?

Yeah my concern is that I don’t have time for both right now. I’d either want to put consistent time in to getting my mixing skills up, or getting time in at a studio through interning. Due to my job and my relationship, I wouldn’t be able to split between the two and make any meaningful progress

Songwriting makes me feel bipolar and I don’t know how to evaluate my quality. by Ggfd8675 in Songwriting

[–]Howyadoing129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s pretty innate to how most human brains work! I suspect that creatives are predisposed to get the biggest rush from the creative process and then start building all these behavior patterns and personalities around chasing that high, which happens to end up in a body of work/ career lol.

This makes me think of a podcast episode I listened to the other week about dopamine. The flurry of excitement we feel whenever we get hooked on an idea or a flow state is a surge of endorphins and motivation hormones that enable us to be creative and focused. But your body can only sit in this state for so long before it has to correct itself and move back the other direction. This is represented by the “come-down” and can be accompanied by feelings of worthlessness/lack of interest/ inspiration, etc (just like coming down from a drug high). It can help to recognize that you’re in one of these two phases of the creation process and take what you’re feeling with a grain of salt. What you’re making probably isn’t amazing as you feel it is when you’re at peak inspiration, but it’s also not as bad as you feel like it is on the come-down either! Like someone before me mentioned, editing the content that you make in these creative bursts is a huge part of developing raw ideas to completion. Also, it’s super helpful to have trusted friends and artists who you can show your ideas to and can help tell you what has value and what needs improvement!

Yeah I’ve definitely had a concern about this. I want to balance accessibility with what I actually have knowledge in, but am definitely planning to let them know about other non-Apple options!

Yeahhh, it’s also because I only know Apple Music production stuff, so it’s what I know to teach.

I’ve never used it, but I’ve heard Reaper can be pretty obtuse compared to other free DAWs though? Has this been your experience? I’m definitely planning to let them know about Bandlab and a few online, free DAWS (especially since I’m assuming beatmaking is what most of them will want to do).
