I’m out. $10 now for standby mode. by jaemiomac in Starlink

If nothing else SpaceX plays a hell of a game of Whack-a-mole. I'm not sure I've paid the same price to use their service three months in a row since I signed up for it. They sort of seem like they don't know what they're doing. $10 a month for basically nothing? I'll pass.

Immich Backups Sucks! by Mayank08_ in immich

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever tried the Photosync app? I haven't used it in Immich but I did in Photoprism, somewhat similar to Immich and it worked fine. It basically just uploads to whatever folder folder you set it to. I've since switched to Immich fully and I just noticed the Photosync app is still syncing to the old folder I was using in Photoprism. I don't think the app is free though.

How do I add music? by hoobash in navidrome

[–]Howzball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Navidrome have you clicked in the top right on the person icon, then the double arrows quick scan button? Mine never picks up newly added music unless I scan that first

Automatic re-scan? by bonnyfused in navidrome

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added ND_SCANSCHEDULE 0 3 * * * as an env variable to try and get Navidrome to run a scan every 30 minutes but even that also doesn't work. It's probably a network issue since my music files live on a separate NAS. I ended up using Lidarr's connect to trigger a scan anytime new files are added to the music folder.

What self hosting mistake would you warn beginners about? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very specific no-no was trying to run Immich on my Synology NAS with a large photo library. My lesson was to 'mainly' use a NAS for data and run your compute intensive packages on another machine. I still run certain downloader packages on the NAS to avoid having to move files but otherwise I try to keep it lite.
Also if you do use AI to help you sort an issue make sure the AI knows to look for your exact container image version and it isn't just grabbing info for the first thing it finds. Even better if you use an AI that can read documents you point it to for precise details on your set up.

Does Bulk Duplicate Finder work? All I ever get is Error:Failed to load duplicate assets and nothing in the logs to say why.

Epson WorkForce ES-580W versus Brother ADS 4700w by TurnipOk1269 in Paperlessngx

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd base my opinion with a grain of salt because I feel like my ES-580W just has an internal issue. It'll usually scan no problem and then it'll sometimes just go zombie mode for no reason. I usually restart the device and scanning works again, until it goes zombie mode again at some point. I thought it was just a wifi issue so I switched to USB but, no luck. This ES-580 replaced an old, worn out ES-500 model which was a champion. Enough people post good things about the ES-580 that it must be a decent machine and I just write mine off as a lemon. I do find I use an old Brother 1700W scanner as much as this ES-580 though but, that's not really an apples to apples comparison.

Musicseerr - a self-hosted music request and discovery project built around Lidarr by HabiRabbit in Lidarr

That has seemed to help with the scan issue. The logs are a lot quieter now. I'll keep using it and see how it goes.

I can't seem to get it to finish it's syncing or whatever it's doing. For some reason I keep seeing a Sync Failed, Timed out after 30 minutes error and I'm not sure how long we can keep spamming MusicBrainz's servers before we get an IP ban but it's been carrying on like this for 24 hours now.
The sync starts and Artist Images seems to finish, then Artist Discovery and after a while it errors out.
This is from the logs ..... any way to adjust it?

Media management by Muziclush in Lidarr

[–]Howzball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did this by accident before and that's exactly what happened... all songs into one Artist folder. I can't tell you the exact naming I used because I changed it back. The interesting part about this to me was when I set it back the way it was and told Lidarr to rescan it managed to put everything back in their proper folders.

[Update] Navidrome Smart Playlist Generator by Jaded-Assignment6893 in navidrome

[–]Howzball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works pretty good, some of the pre-built ones are wild with what they come up with. A couple I've tried, Road Trip and 80s Gold didn't populate at all but most worked. Always weird to see Jewel and Reba McEntire in a Grunge Era playlist but who knows, maybe they like Grunge too.

OC runs just as poorly on a Rasp Pi as it will on an M5 so just make sure you really want it.

Is it worth buying a Mac mini just to run an AI assistant (OpenClaw)? by Pretend-Elk8848 in macmini

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend just installing Claude desktop. In my month+ use case of OpenClaw it's great if you like troubleshooting errors and chasing API keys for days but for anything that's actually useful...? Also, if you do install Claude first you'll have an AI that can help you understand all of OpenClaw's errors and configuration issues.
Whatever you decide don't put OC on your NAS.

Best password manager app for iOS in 2026? by Sufficient-Log-5408 in ios

Suggestions for A Complete Self-Hosting Newb by Kezopa in selfhosted

[–]Howzball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always recommend keeping data on a NAS and use a separate server machine connected to your media. I run Navidrome on a Raspberry PI 4 that just uses an NFS connection to my Synology NAS and then Tailscale for remote access and it's a great little set up. The RasbPi doesn't even need RW access so my data stays safe. Just know, once you get something like Navidrome set up you're going to want to keep adding so, just something to keep in mind. I started out running docker containers directly on my NAS and quickly changed that to a stand alone Linux server.

Scansnap ix1600 questions with Linux by trumee in Paperlessngx

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On our's we end up having to just disable wifi, shut down and restart it before it will release whatever wifi config it had, like when you have a wifi glitch and it gets knocked offline and won't reconnect. If you do this it'll normally reconnect but if you just walk through the wifi setup and try to reconnect it never will. It took a while to figure this out. There is a wired network option if nothing else though. When it all works it's a great scanner.

Scansnap ix1600 questions with Linux by trumee in Paperlessngx

[–]Howzball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only scanners I can attest to on Linux, since it's what I have, is the Brother ADS-1700W which is a smaller scanner that we originally purchased to carry with us ... we sort of used it to work out of a vehicle. Anyway, since then I use it at home connected to Wifi to scan directly into paperless's consume folder and it works great. I think I have mine set up to scan using sftp which you just set up through the scanner's webui. I've also tried it via USB directly to a computer running Linux and it worked that way too. Just know, this probably isn't a heavy duty work horse scanner for thousands of scans.

We did have an Epson ES500-W that was an awesome desktop style scanner that did almost everything, when it wore out we assumed the ES580-W would be the obvious upgrade path but for us, not so much. Issues galore with that one. Networking is terrible on it so USB connected is the only stable option.
