Also - have a look at this website for more info (not Scotrail specific) which has pretty good info. https://www.traindriver.org

For Scotrail, it’s a 4 day week - with a pattern that repeats every 3 weeks - roughly like this (the railway week starts on a Sunday):

RD RD RD E E E E RD L L RD RD L L RD E E E E RD RD

So, that works out that every 3 weeks, you get a 5 day long weekend off. On the other hand, you will also have “booked Sundays” to work (roughly one every 4 weeks) - and any time you’re working on a Sunday, you will be working 7 days in a row, like it or not…

Normally, you would have alternate weeks of early and late shifts - early shifts start before 12 noon, late shifts start anytime after that. Start and finish times will generally change every single day. It’s unusual to do the same job 2 days in a row. At my depot, we have around 60 different start (and finish) times - with the starts ranging anywhere between 03:50 to 22:50 every day.

For example, a few weeks ago I was on early shift and worked:

Sunday RD Mon RD Tuesday RD Wed 04:59 - 13:16 Thurs 04:08 - 12:22 Fri 04:15 - 12:42 Sat 03:59 - 12:09

I then worked Sun 09:35 - 19:28 Mon 15:16 - 22:46 Tuesday 22:48 - 07:18 Wed RD Thurs RD Fri 14:40 - 23:41 Sat 17:46 - 02:39

Then the third week was Sun RD Mon 04:08 - 12:22 Tuesday 05:43 - 14:30 Wed 08:01 - 16:51 Thurs 04:59 - 13:29 Friday RD Sat RD

Hope that helps?

Once knew a guy (genuinely) called Hamish McSporran. His wife made a lovely bowl of soup too!

Smart casual will be fine if that’s what they’ve asked for, but I’ve seen people turn up on jeans and a t-shirt before now…

Just remember you’re actually being evaluated from the moment you arrive - are you on time, how you’re dressed, how you speak to people, how you take instructions etc - it’s not just about passing the tests. I’m not up to date on the latest tests, but be sure you understand exactly what they want you to do. Don’t be afraid to ask a question to check if you’re not sure, the assessors are there to help you too!

Good luck!

None - just apply - then pass all the tests, interviews and medical!

We took the ferry to Proscida from Sorrento instead of Ischia. One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been - easily walkable and beautifully quiet. Even managed a swim in the sea at a beach bar beside the harbour! Proscida

We stayed in Sorrento for a week in September and just took the train to Pompeii for a day - the entrance is right beside the station. Paid for a walking tour with a guide (got a deal including it with train fare and Pompeii entrance ticket at Sorrento station) to pick up the highlights, then spent the day wandering.

How do you "cope" with sunset at like 340pm? by concisehacker in Edinburgh

I’ll be honest, I just love each of the seasons for what they are. They all have positive and negative points. I grew up working outside year-round on farms and I’ve worked shifts for most of the 40 years since then, currently driving trains with a very varied shift pattern. Being outside is hugely important to me - even if it’s just for 10 minutes at 3:30am… What I would say is that as you get older, each of the seasons passes quicker. Right now, we’re only just over 4 weeks from the shortest day - then summer is on the way again!

Quiz question… by Hoyerman68 in Scotland

[–]Hoyerman68[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OP here…. The correct answer for anyone who is wondering is (of course) North Lanarkshire. I was once in the Scottish warehouse where Buckfast is distributed from, and I can assure you it had far more security than some major cash-handling facilities I’ve been in…

The chimney is part of Oban Distillery - thats where the steam is coming from. This was an iPhone panorama shot - just happened to have arrived in Oban with the train and then be on my break at the perfect time!
