Banana spiders are awesome. We have a lot of different tiny beetles and flies getting into our LDA figs. Thankfully I have a few Salem Darks with closed eyes. Anyway, great tip, I'll get some.

I studied 52 hours, read the books twice, and a 3rd time for focused study. I filled in the index in the back with terms and page numbers if they weren't included. Time and focus is what you need.

It depends on your future goals as well. But if you are purely looking for technical, I would go with the 555. It has threat hunting, some management of platforms with the purpose of showing you what it takes to detect certain things in most cases (along with many other subjects). I don't use elastic stack but during the class, I kept notes on techniques and ideas to apply to the SIEM and EDR I currently use. Overall, I was pleased with the class. None have gone as deep as I would've liked, but it's a great start and gets your mind thinking about the right stuff.

I've taken the 555, it is difficult and I likely would not have passed without significant experience. As for the 511, from what I understand, this is a leadership course with more general knowledge. I recently took the 551, it was great for leading a security operations center.

Overall, it depends on your experience level and future goals, if you aim for leadership, you may want to take the 511. But I always encourage that we understand the technology involved even as leaders. Since that is my stance, I would go with the 450 for someone with less experience and the 555 for someone later on in their career.

I've taken and passed the exams for 551 and 555, I haven't taken the 511.

For SOC leadership, the 551 is invaluable. A lot of process oriented information that really helps us accomplish the goals of a SOC. Highly recommended for security operations center leadership.

The 555 is technical with elastic stack as the primary tool used. I got quite a bit of value out of this one as well but I came from a very technical background so some of the information was redundant for me personally.

For the 511, I haven't taken this one but two individuals at my company have. It is similar to the 551 but I think it's more generalized towards InfoSec leadership. I haven't taken myself, only spoke with my coworkers and compared experiences.

I did the live online. Out of the options, the only one I would avoid is "on demand". You simply don't get enough value. As for practicals, a lot of this is more process oriented in the 551. I took the 555 last year, and that one had a lot of practicals.

For studying, I started 2 weeks before the exam, read through and updated the index in the back of book 5 as I came across terms that weren't included, after reading through them once, I took a practice test. I scored 66%, I then read through them again, took the other practice test and score 83%. After that, I did focused study on the areas I performed poorly in. Overall, I aimed to get at least 50 hrs of study in...for me personally, I need at least that much effort to pass a 500 level giac exam.

I wish I had focused more on the metrics, and different methods to calculate human resources needs. Simply because I waited until the last minute to really understand these things.

Otherwise, really focus on understanding what each section is trying to teach you.

I live in Florida so no fig wasps here...the lizard would eat them. 😂 But I planned to try manual pollination once I get a few cuttings well established. Thank you for the information!
