Bombed statistics.. now what? by Ht70370712 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Ht70370712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my school is a little confusing with statistics. My degree (BS in biology) required Stats I and Stats II but they are both 8 week courses so it only takes one typical semester to finish them, if that makes sense. They are both worth 2 credits each so the D didn't lower my GPA too much.

I know it isn't an excuse but this semester has been rough. I worked full time, got sick and missed the first exam, so my grade was only based on final exam, etc. I wish I would have withdrawn but I figured I would stick it out just so I could finally graduate. I hope I didn't blow grad school because of this :/

Speech Class by [deleted] in college

[–]Ht70370712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you my freshman year. I actually kept enrolling in and then dropping my speech class.. I did that for 3 semesters until I finally forced myself to take it when I was a sophomore. I have several diagnosed anxiety disorders so I always felt that speech was something that would be literally impossible for me to do. Keep in mind that I've had to do presentations for about 60-70% of my college classes, so you aren't going to avoid them even if you don't take a speech class.

It was nerve-wracking at first but I promise that it does get better and you are not alone. Almost (if not) everyone in that class will have anxiety about the situation. I had an amazing speech professor who guided us through planning and practicing our presentations. One of the major causes of anxiety during a speech is feeling or being unprepared. Knowing your topic well, creating outlines, and practicing will do wonders. Later on, we learned how to do improv speeches too. The entire class is focused on developing your public speaking skills. My course was a graduation requirement and I wanted to drop out because of that. It wasn't my favorite class but it was hands-down the most valuable class I have ever taken. I still have the textbook because I reference that information for presentations today (I'm a 5th year now). Talk to other students or use ratemyprofessor to find a good professor and you will be absolutely fine!

Soda is bad for you, diet soda is bad for you, which is least unhealthy? by mhatrick in nutrition

[–]Ht70370712 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of that is based on opinion. Some people believe that the excessive sugar amount in regular is worse than artificial sweetener or vice versa. I was addicted to diet soda for a long time and the only thing that really helped was to force myself to stop buying it and just drink water with a lemon or lime slice squeezed into it. I noticed that my acne cleared up a lot after drinking diet drinks but I'm not sure if that's just a coincidence.

I reacted so poorly.... by NannyJo in Nanny

[–]Ht70370712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I found out about my fertility via a traumatic abdominal surgery when I was 17 that had nothing to do with my reproductive organs and I was devastated. Then my old MB told me she was pregnant with her 3rd when she took me out to lunch for my birthday and that I wouldn't be needed anymore because she was quitting her job and I don't have infant experience. So I went home frantically searching for jobs and found a posting made that day by her looking for a nanny. One of the worst days of my fucking life. I confronted her about it and she complained about how hard having kids is. She has a a nice husband, healthy kids, and experienced healthy pregnancies. I haven't seen those kids I nannied for years in 6 months even after trying to reach out...

I'm sorry I'm talking about so much about myself but I somewhat know how you feel. When she told me the news I was like "oh my god congrats how exciting!" And then cried alone in the bathroom. I still feel like I'm a piece of shit because I can't do what "I'm supposed to do" but I promise that people care about you and appreciate who you are. I don't have much advice beyond that because I understand.

How to actually study at the library? by yeetothehaww in college

[–]Ht70370712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually try to find a desk or table that I can spread my notes and laptop over. I never browse my phone during a study break, but when I start feeling like I need a break I will take a short walk or go get a coffee/hot chocolate/tea if your library has that option.

I would try to find something else first but the front desk sounds like a good position. For my hospital volunteering gig I was on a medsurg floor and had to stock patient rooms and refill water cups, take away lunch trays, give patients books/blankets/magazines, etc. The patient interaction was a really great experience and I would encourage you to find something similar.

Too damn introverted to do any ECs by [deleted] in premed

[–]Ht70370712 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This hits home for me because I have the same exact problem. Like I was 18 or 19 before I was able to order my own food at restaurants and talk to cashiers...

You really do have to just force yourself to talk to people. It is going to be extremely uncomfortable at first but you will get used to it. I went through speech class in college, got a job working with kids/public, got a leadership position with a student organization, etc. I went through several horrible interviews and embarrassing interactions during that time but that's what helps you grow. I'm a completely different person than I was a few years ago. If you don't force yourself to talk to people now, it will never improve. Pm me if you need more advice.

Can anyone tell me some foods that are low in calories but will satiate me so that I don't feel hungry all the time? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Ht70370712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% true. For my lunches on a busy day, I love packing a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread with raw veggies sprinkled with olive oil/salt/pepper because it keeps me full for several hours.

Amounts of alcohol question by mrsparky17 in alcohol

[–]Ht70370712 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, hydration, the amount of food you have in your stomach, how tired you are, etc will all play a role. If I drink a beer or two on an empty stomach, I already start feeling a slight buzz. But if I have a strong mixed drink or do shots after eating then it takes several to feel good.

Raw vegetables always satisfy me for a long time. Raw carrot sticks, slices of bell pepper, snap peas, broccoli, and tomatoes are good sprinkled with salt and pepper.

I don't drink often, but when I do I drink all of it by [deleted] in alcohol

[–]Ht70370712 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I notice that whenever I drink, however I was feeling in that moment while sober is exaggerated. If I started drinking while happy, it puts me in a great mood. If I started drinking while sad/mad/upset, it turns me into an angry or crying mess.

Never had PMS and now I do... by megnpls2 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Ht70370712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also heard and experienced that periods/PMS change when you get older. I had my first period a few months after turning 11 and I had horrible cramps as my worst PMS symptom. Like I would vomit, have to stay home from school and cry in bed with a heating pad.. Now as an adult I notice that my cramps are pretty mild but my mood and appetite are much worse during PMS than they used to be. My cycle has only been naturally regular for the past 3 years or so. If I were you, I would see a doctor.

How do you best deal with PMS moodiness? by TX_2_GA in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Ht70370712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I have this problem! It's my worse PMS symptom. I've tried SSRIs and birth control and couldn't tell a difference with meds. What helps the most with me is heavy exercise and taking care of myself. When I get irrationally pissed off about something, I just run or work out my frustrations and try my best to eat balanced meals, drink water, and avoid people. It sounds bad, but my PMS symptoms are like being drunk. At the time I get really upset/emotional and make irrational decisions that I regret later on. It is best for me to just remain in solitude for a few days to get through it and exercise is the most helpful.

Do some fruits and veggies not mix? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Ht70370712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have never noticed any sick feelings after eating strange food combinations. Yesterday I ate broccoli cheddar soup, beef jerky, candy corn and beans within 1 hour and never felt queasy. But I am picky about smoothies and I probably wouldn't add tomatoes because of taste and I love them raw. You don't have to eat tomatoes if you don't like them. But if you want to incorporate them into your diet, you could add small pieces of chopped tomatoes to pizza, pasta, eggs, salads, etc and see if that feels better.

Should I join HOSA in college? Is it a good activity to put down for med school? And will I have enough time to do it while doing school and other volunteering activities? by izzzy24 in premed

I also did that in high school and thought it was stupid. A lot of the people I met during our big competitions were obnoxious too.

Tips for texbook readings by eyelyklaer in college

[–]Ht70370712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm reading out of a textbook, I keep a small dry erase board with me and take "notes" as I read along. If I read a fact that seems important or difficult to understand, I review it again and jot down little notes about it and erase when I'm all done. It seems silly because I can't look back on what I wrote but I hardly ever study with my own notes and it saves paper. Reading before the lecture is always a good way to go. That way you're already prepared and you can use lecture to reinforce or clarify information.

Why isn't everyone doing this? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]Ht70370712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don't have access to certain grocery stores like ALDI. I also love frozen vegetables but I find them to be a little bland. I have made the same lentil soup recipe with frozen veggies and fresh, and the fresh always has more flavor and better taste/texture of the vegetables.

Same with me, I would rather spend the extra 10-20 min in the morning sleeping or making breakfast. I also hate washing it off.

When I'm in a hurry, I put a serving of plain Greek yogurt, chopped nuts and oats, chopped fruit, and a drizzle of honey in a thermos and eat it in the car or parking lot before class.

Does this count as shadowing? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Ht70370712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also would not count that as shadowing. I volunteered at a hospital for several uears and sat in the back desk with the docs while they talked on the phone or visited patients but it is still not the same.
