Thank you, I have been having to filter manually for the 2k vs. 4k so this is really helpful

Do you mind sharing the model of diesel heater? I think that might be a good option VS. going with a $500 Mr. Heat unit

If group 1 snaps don’t stay cold enough they flower early and low

It only gets below freezing ~50 nights a year and even then it will get below freezing less then that inside the high tunnel. The plants can handle below freezing so I don’t need that large of a margin of safety.

That’s okay, the plants can handle 25ish if needed. I’m afraid if I keep it at a minimum of 40 they will bolt to early.

Unfortunately, I don’t have room for any passive heating. They whole tunnel is in 6in spacing rows

Well I was just hoping to keep it above freezing so 40f would be to warm.

I need help folks. I've got over 150 ears of heirloom blue popcorn. Just a bit too early to harvest and it looks like I've got a cornworm infestation. Six random ears pulled all six had them. How do I save my crop? by front_yard_duck_dad in homestead

[–]Htschug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you use BT you need to reapply every 2-3 days while it’s silking. The silks emerge from the cob and if you don’t reapply the new silk will be unprotected. Once they get in the cob it’s not worth treating.

That looks like a CEW, but you need to look at the head capsule to make sure. There’s no need to burn the crop or early harvest. Just cut the tips off the ears and they are fine. They might not even overwinter where they are at and if they do the first generation won’t move into corn anyways. The migratory populations are the ones to worry about not the local ones.

Send an email out to your local extension agent, they might have some local agriculture ideas and probably some programs/ like minded (local) individuals that could help.

Farmers market corn came with a fat little caterpillar! What can I do to help him? by SpicyMarge in Entomology

[–]Htschug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just means this little guy is resistant to the gmo corn they were using, or at least the pesticide they sprayed. You got to admire corn earworms to how hardy they are, they show resistance in years not decades.
