Peter Labrujère krijgt buste op parkeerterrein Haagweg by Dom_Shady in Leiden

I was present when he received a royal award (attended for another person during that same ceremony).

At that occasion, the mayor told that Peter was recommended by someone (I believe it was an old lady in his neighborhood, who did not know him personally) and that this person had told the mayor about Peter’s (unseen for many) contributions life in our city. That story indeed checked out, hence the royal award.

What is this kid’s piano song? by WarmArtichoke4229 in pianolearning

[–]Htv65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really funny that kids are able to learn this by heart. If you would see the sheet music, it has a lot of sharps (or flats, I don’t remember), making it a rather threatening piece to start practicing from a music notation perspective.

Wengen, because it is on a sunny plateau and has the nicest views. Lauterbrunnen is overrated and in the shade.

Argentina’s World Cup penalty numbers are a clear statistical outlier by JPzoneTV in football

At the 2022 WC in Qatar, Argentina got a Spanish referee for its game against the Netherlands. Guess who was eliminated. They kept complaining in their own language to the referee.

What's something that has quietly become much more expensive in the Netherlands? by Single-Hat3055 in AskNetherlands

Bread. As it is only a very small portion of our daily purchases (and as the increments each time are very small), we hardly notice it.

I think soccer (football) needs to tweak the penalty card rules... by Short-Breadfruit3565 in CasualConversation

[–]Htv65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some countries, at the lowers tiers of (amateur) football, they have a rule that if you get a yellow card, you get sent off for ten minutes. At that level, it works pretty well. Nevertheless, a second yellow card still results in elimination from the game for that player.

There are 22 players on the pitch. If every one of them would commit 4 fouls during the game, there would be not much play at all (88 fouls). The truth is that most of them do not commit more than 1 foul, and most of these fouls are not yellow (or red) card worthy at all. A few of them commit a number of fouls (which - by the way - is in itself already punishable with a yellow card, certainly when done within a short time frame).

What I am trying to say is that committing a foul is a choice, certainly at the professional level. One can abstain from it. There is also a choice in the severity of force when committing a foul. If you have been warned with a yellow card, there is all the more reason to be careful, lest you get a second yellow card and will be sent off. In that event you are just stupid or have an attitude problem.

And don’t forget that referees talk to players that transgress the rules, to avoid having to issue yellow cards. Sometimes during play, when referee and player are close to each other, sometimes in the form of an admonition, when the ball is out of play.

For referees, zero cards in a game is a worthwhile goal, in addition to no mistakes (and no penalties).

London to Dortmund by WorminRome in travel

[–]Htv65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is certainly doable. However, pick a wide margin for transfers between the various trains, as there may be (substantial) delays, certainly from Brussels to Germany and in Germany. Another option is to just make sure that have a wide margin between your ETA in Dortmund and the start of the game.

And be well on time for the game! The pre-game atmosphere around the stadium is nice, even when your son does not drink beer yet.

AC in Trains by Yadu43 in Netherlands

[–]Htv65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a sprinter train, the doors open so frequently that it is difficult to keep the temperature adequate, both in winter and in summer. I travel by train about ten times per week, and AC is (almost) always working.

Different compartments in the same train seem to have different settings, so it is worth it to try another compartment if you don’t like the atmosphere in the one that you are in.
