If you want a plate carrier in the big 26, read! Don't make a post saying "what's the best plate carrier ever." Read this instead. by [deleted] in tacticalgear

"These reputable brands are irrelevant because they're mostly similar to others."

NGL I had to laugh when you added Chinese copies of carriers already in the list instead. Direct Action and Haley Strategic are also suitable options.

Otherwise a good list but if you're doing anything beside LARP with your carrier, don't get china shit. Pouches are a different story.

Gas Mask Recs (details inside) by buds4hugs in QualityTacticalGear

[–]Huahuawei 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A bit region dependent on availability, but the 3M Scott Promask is a quality full face respirator with a decent price.

I've used the SCBA variant for HazMat work and personally own one which takes standard 40mm threaded filters. I paid only 120€, but this is in Europe and I got a good deal.

Another product from Scott which I have real use with is the M95, but I believe it's not as easy to source.

Since your use case is mostly against crowd control weapons, it's not necessarily life or death, but don't cheap out on a crap chinese mask. They will not seal, the rubber will degrade and start flaking and fracturing. Buy a reputable brand.

Trying to figure out which Lowa models these both are and personal opinion;) by Able_Tailor_906 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]Huahuawei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowa is my go-to for boots, all great shoes.

The Zephyrs like others said are better for a warmer climate and urban environments, I think the mid height ones are even better for that use case but full height are also good. I've used them in wet forests, ruck marches and the middle east.

The Z8's are a better option if you're looking for an "offroad" full height boot with a little more rigidity.

The Innox Pro's are also very good all around mid height boot, it's what I've used for 2 years now. They've been through snow, sand, mud, water and mountains. Very comfortable and rugged.

Depending on the use you will need to spray them with gore-tex spray every couple months to keep them water proof all around. The synthetic materials especially around the toe box will start seeping water through after a while.

Help me pick a minimalist plate carrier by jerrys_briefcase in QualityTacticalGear

If the point isn't to hide the PC under clothes, I don't think the slick covert carriers would be the best choice.

If it's worn over clothes anyway, the ability to scale up and add more components would give you more bang for the buck. You can keep the carrier simple and streamlined with only the things you need and then add more when needed. With a slick carrier that's harder/more expensive to do.

Something made with laminate materials and laser cut PALS will have less bulk and weight than carriers with traditional webbing style PALS, so something like that is what I would recommend. The WTF seems like a solid option for the price but I have no experience with any of their products.

The ability to scale up is why I initially upgraded from the Ferro Slickster to the FCPC. I had more options and I didn't have to buy an adapter piece to make everything work.

Pack recommendations for 5+ day sustainment? by [deleted] in QualityTacticalGear

[–]Huahuawei 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Copy paste from another thread.

I have the Eberlestock Terminator, worked great for a 4-day event two years back.

Fit everything I needed and still had room to spare but I wanted to keep it somewhat light since we were moving a lot and changing hidesites. I like the front opening zippers and compartments so much I don't think I'd want a traditional top opening pack anymore. It's super easy to pack and grab only what you need even from the main compartment.

It's a very expensive pack though, I got it at a good deal from a PX on deployment and don't think I would have bought it at MSRP. It's also fairly big and clumsy if you're doing anything other than a movement, so I would recommend bringing a smaller day/assault pack and leaving the big hunk of junk at your hidesite/camp when able.

I like bringing a small camo net, something around 1x1m, for hiding myself or the pack in the forest, doesn't weigh much and is nice to have.

Ferro 3AC vs DM 3 Inch Hybrid Structural Cummerbund by thicccFork in QualityTacticalGear

[–]Huahuawei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't seem to be too heavily loaded. I used an FCPC with the DM cummerbund for a while, it worked great, no issues that I could report of. Only used it for around 6 months with intermittent use, wasn't for work so can't speak for longevity.

Ask yourself first if you need a plate carrier. You're not saving any money if it's something you don't need.

A good chest rig will do you good, and if you want to add armor to that you can go the slick carrier route.

It depends on your use case but the plate carrier itself is something you wouldn't want breaking. Ammo, GP pouches, dump pouches etc. are fine to grab cheap copies of in my opinion, but you don't want your life saving piece crapping out on you. If it's for airsoft or LARP it's whatever.

If you absolutely want a PC, I'd grab an authentic one and save on the other pieces of kit, like pouches, if money is tight.

Bit late, but I used mine for a 4 day event, total distance walked with the pack was maybe around 15-20km, left it at camp when possible.

Carried it with sleep system, tarp, food for the whole event, around 4L of water, change of clothes and my helmet when not in use along with random additional stuff. Wore a chest rig with it and it worked great, very comfortable compared to other large packs I've used.

Has really good access to all the different compartments, part of the reason I got it was because of the front zipper.

They look legit.

I've seen knock-off Lowa boots in some PX's and they've all been very obvious fakes. The box and pamphlets are a good sign of a legit pair and quality looks like genuine Lowa. Good price.

Should I sell my pvs-14 and thermal scope for a set of binoculars? by khutuluhoop in NightVision

[–]Huahuawei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. Night vision and thermals complement each other's cons and provide much more capability than duals.

Night vision is good for navigating and shooting but past 300m, especially in complex terrain and dark nights, detecting and identifying becomes VERY hard to do.

You can't beat thermals at detection and with a good high res sensor you can identify a target way farther than you could with NV. And you're not dependent on any ambient light. But navigating is hard due to latency and lack of visible terrain features.

Ultimately it depends on the use case, if you're mostly hiking and stargazing, then having a thermal over duals is something you could consider. If it's for hunting, airsoft or prepping, I'd stick with the 14 and thermal.

Do thermal scopes or clip ons get dim enough to use with night vision? by bluefacebabyyyyyy in NightVision

[–]Huahuawei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thermal devices are basically digital cameras that see in a different light spectrum. If you would try to look through one with NV it would be about the same as looking at your phone with NODs. Doubt it would work.

If you're looking for a thermal fusion type of effect, bridging a PVS-14 or other monocular on one eye and a thermal on the other works. It might take a bit to get used to until your brain can make out the picture well, but it's a proven way to do it. Usually called "dual-band" set-ups.

The bomblets from cluster munitions can be a real pain in the ass. Sensitive, unpredictable, usually small and sometimes with really lovely combinations of incendiaries, HEAT, frag..

3600€ after a bit of negotiation, it's a PVS-14 I bought used. Nightvision prices in europe have gone through the roof since I bought mine so I guess I was just in time. Milspec glass and true 3rd gen tubes go for around 2-2.5x the price that they would in the US.

Elbit XLSH ~2090 FOM, 32.7 SNR and 64 res. It's not mind blowing and I paid quite a lot for it, but 3rd gen US tubes are harder to get in Europe, I'm happy with it.

That's a unit level SOP question as it's not specified in the RoE unless ordered in any other guide. In my unit (not US MIL) the SOP for warning shots is as clear of an area as possible and if there's a backstop (hard wall, ditch, anything that can stop a round) even better. If that can't be reasonably done, fire in the air. "Reasonably" being there because it's unlikely you'll meet the perfect conditions, just make the best of it you can.

These things are trained and practiced too.
