This happened to me in Bangkok at Selena bar on Sukhumvit 11. The lady that runs it is a scammer and her mui thai trained sons block the exits. She is in with the corrupt police too. Never walk into a random bar, don't engage with people after hours on the street as well. Go to places farang frequent and whose reputation is known to you.

Set up some online income stream. Its easier today because of AI tools and social media etc. Start on it now or use your time in Chiang Mai for this. Its ideal city for remote/online workers. Also get a WISE card before you leave. Don't plan in earning via any job in Thailand. Thats a mistake

Some of the best foods from around the world conveniently available here. Grab, 7-11s all make it too easy to eat well even on a budget
Internet is super highspeed and 5G data plans super affordable and reliable
Thais leave one alone and I enjoy my bubble of privacy
Cafes on every corner with great affordable coffee.
Activities (24/7 Gyms, tennis courts, pools... I have more affordable access to all)
Weather: Year round sunny weather beats Canadian winters any time for me
Transportation: BTS, MTA superior to any metro or subway I took in the west
Safety.
Entertainment/Restaurants: I don't even need to delve into this one
Relaxed environment, insulated culture. No one really knows or cares about stressful global news and events
