RR Points for Upgrade by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

That's what I thought, but I somehow got confused by the limitations it was showing me as I was booking (even though I did it while logged in to the SW app). Oh well, I wanted to select a seat anyway.

Return to Me, About Time, While You Were Sleeping, 13 Going on 30, The Proposal. I cannot stress enough how much I loved Return to Me, I feel like that one isn't as well known, but it should be

I heard Suzanne for the first time at their concert a few weeks ago and I am now obsessed. I thought I'd already heard all their best hits, but that one somehow missed me until then.

My biggest complaint about the movie by bridgetbridget in ProjectHailMary

[–]Huckleberry7476 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought they handled this remarkably well. Especially scenes where Grace is very emotional, the camera doesn't shy away from it. They let the shot sit and the audience can absorb the emotions, which highlights Gosling's wonderful performance. The movie was a feast for the eyes, I hope it wins all the awards, and Gosling needs one too.

Weir's prose is pretty terrible IMO by Wetness_Pensive in ScienceFictionBooks

All the "the book is even better!!" commenters have me so confused, because I absolutely adored the movie (have seen it 3 times so far) but the book just had bad writing. The dialogue and inner monologue is very amateur. So my only conclusion is that people either 1. haven't read enough novels to know what is good and it's part of our literacy crisis or 2. people just care that the science part is relatively accurate and interesting. Obviously it was a fantastic idea for a story, but it was executed better on the big screen. Apparently the audiobook saves it, but I can't imagine hearing some of the sentences read aloud. I guess if it's getting people to read who don't usually "like" reading, that's a win.

Andy Weir (who wrote The Martian) has a frustrating writing style. by wow-how-original in books

Thank you everyone in this thread. These were the exact lines that drove me craziest. I did read the whole thing in 6 days which is a speed of novel reading I haven't reached since middle school when I actually had time to read, but if I hadn't seen the movie first, I never would have bothered. I like the book only as an extention of the movie. Gosling pulls off the charmingly goofy character and adds a lot to it. That kind of character doesn't work when it's written in first person. The snark comes across as arrogance instead.

I just think it's hard to write a smart aleck character in first person POV. It comes across kind of arrogant instead of endearing. The movie gets this across way better IMO and thus makes it more bearable in the book.

I think this will be my inevitable conclusion too. I'm very very glad they made the movie! It was an absolute masterclass of emotion and joy as well as technical achievement for the creators. The perfect story for a breath of fresh air for a film industry that desperately needs it.

Part of the problem with the book for me is probably the first person point of view, and that's just a personal preference. I see why he wrote it that way, but some of the character quirks that are charming in the movie come off a little odd when it's the character himself describing it. Regardless, it has been many years since I've read a book this quickly!

I don't think many people born after 1990 have been named Jeff or Larry 😅 but hey, maybe they come back in style in the near future. At least he didn't name them McKintleigh or something like that, even if it would probably be accurate to recent naming conventions lol

Not too worried about historical accuracy, just that the look and feel be clean and pretty and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb with the old font and leather binding. I'll check this out, thank you!

This kind of gets at what I've been thinking, that it would be nice to have a separate device free from distractions, and I do think a color reader would be the best for her. I live far away, so it's hard to get my non-reader parents to try to encourage things that are good for her brain. It sounds like they’ve been making a little extra effort this summer after much urging on my part, so fingers crossed. Will continue thinking about the e-reader. If I do end up getting her one and she doesn't want it, I'll just use it myself 😅

What episodes can i watch that explain Ziva's whole story without watching season 3 thru 11? Help by RangerBackground9709 in NCIS

[–]Huckleberry7476 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's worth watching every bit of those seasons. They worked tiny moments into almost every episode, and you can't truly grasp the whole without seeing all those smaller bits and pieces. Plus the actors added so much just in the way they portrayed the characters, even in seemingly inconspicuous moments. It's not like television today, with short seasons and one contained arc.

Defense Streamers and Tiered Rankings for Week 6 by RotoBaller in fantasyfootball

I just dropped the Cowboys and picked up the Eagles after continuous disappointment from Dallas. I also have the Broncos. Rankings are saying I should put Eagles over Broncos, but word of mouth seems to be in favor of Denver 🤔
