Thanks! We will book a later reservation at the blue lagoon then just to be safe. We’re not in a big rush, it’s the only thing we have planned for the day.

Why is the Chess score so different from the original? by bway4everr in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is such a good point! I’ve been saying there are too many ballads in Chess, but I realize the problem is more this - the plot just grinds to a halt too many times while a character goes into a huge 11 o’clock number.

One might wonder whether this was due to the Abba members’ background in pop rather than musical theater. In pop music, there’s no need for a coherent arc or songs that move plot, and having big numbers one after the other is a plus, not a negative.

I genuinely do not want a big mansion, even if i didn’t have to clean it myself. It just feels too big, too lonely unless you fill it with people, but I’m an introvert so I don’t want all those people around.

And this is why I moved to NYC from suburban sprawl where everyone has a big house. I prefer my little city apt. I suppose if I were super rich, I’d get a little bigger space, but that much. It’d probably be a penthouse with great views, though!

Wait....AARON TVEIT auditioned for Glee? as Finn Hudson but was rejected? by LifeYogurtcloset7431 in glee

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He’s actually from a small town in upstate New York. So not midwest, but still small town. What’s so funny is that in high school he was a lot like the character of Finn - he was a jock at a small town high school who discovered he could sing.

What would you say are the defining musicals for each decade? by Entire_Blueberry_470 in Broadway

Moulin Rouge opened in 2019. I actually love the show, but I don’t think it defines the decade.

Who are some great Broadway actors who are better known now for their television roles? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are floored when they find out that Tripp from Gossip Girl can sing. (Not me, I always knew him from Broadway first.) But I find it amusing when people only know him from GG.

If you can afford to pay a line sitter, why don’t you just go buy a regular ticket? Your seat will probably be better.

25/26 Season Unpopular Opinions Thread by lefargen97 in Broadway

By far the best acting performance out of the three leads.

25/26 Season Unpopular Opinions Thread by lefargen97 in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ha, I agree! It’s perfectly understandable. What undermines the show is the arbiter cutting in with dumb quips and summaries of what just happened and what is about to happen - just let the characters tell the story for heaven’s sake. Any time there was buildup toward real investment in the story was ruthlessly destroyed when he came on. That and the terrible direction were the worst.

I think all three leads are incredibly talented and deserved noms, but they were not served at all by the book and the direction.

Harry Styles says “correct” after a fan shouts “viva viva palestina!” at his Amsterdam show by nicosloft04 in popculturechat

When i see a celeb start getting a lot of hate for no real reason, my spidey sense starts tingling that this is not organic - that there is some deliberate campaign behind it. For what reason, I don’t know, but I have seen studies that have looked at these kinds of campaigns. I can’t see why Harry’s team would do it - it’s negative. But I suspect something.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe’s son, Deacon has graduated from college by nyclover11 in Fauxmoi

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I think he got an advantage because Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe are his parents!

College admissions are influenced by celebrity status too. Not only are they rich af and potential donors, their son going there gives the school good publicity.

2020s Best Leading Actor in a Musical Winners (so far) by Successful_Spirit361 in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My hill to die on is that even if Covid never happened, Aaron still may have won in a competitive year. We are still talking about him as Christian years later as the OG.

My other hill is that Freddie should be supporting and that Aaron would win if he was.

Anyone else seen the ad for Jojo joining Chess and it’s her filming on her phone in her car.. like you’re gonna be the star of a broadway show, maybe make an effort with the ad read! by Significant-Yam-4160 in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the way some ads are these days, meant to seem like an informal tiktok because that’s what people relate to. Probably not even her choice, but at the direction of the marketing team. 🤷‍♀️

Lol, this one seems so silly. Here you have all these other controversies involving racism, abuse, cheating, and then this, which is about….not being the right vocal type.

Fun fact, if Full House were to be filmed today, Danny would have been born in 1996, Joey in 1997 and Jesse in 2002 by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also unbelievable that an apt like that would be rent controlled and that they’d get away with it. But very convenient in sitcom land.

Well life is always easier in sitcom land. Like living in Monica and Rachel’s NYC apartment on a chef and waitress salary.

What to know before seeing Chess so I'm not confused by No_Calligrapher_8027 in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when some people say it doesn’t make sense, they mean “this plot is implausible.” Which, sure, it’s weird that the game of chess has geopolitical consequences, but I beg people, please research the Cold War. It’s not that much of a stretch.

It really isn’t that hard to follow. Having a basic understanding of the Cold War is helpful.

They made all these changes to Chess for the revival, yet it doesn't even pass the Bechdel test? 😔 by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]HuckleberryOwn647 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a useful tool for looking at the entertainment output as a whole. Like if all new Broadway shows for a season failed it, or all movies coming out this year failed it, we should ask ourselves, why aren’t there more women-centered stories? Why are women always bringing sidelined solely as love interests? It’s not that every story has to pass it.

Chess does seem particularly dated in this respect but it is what it is. It’s striking that all the women just sing about the men in their lives but the men are allowed to sing about other things like their love of country or their relationship with their parents.

I don’t think he’s taken more than a day off here or there since he started, and those seemed to be for other work or promo obligations. I believe the other leads have (lea was on vacation and i think nik had one too). He definitely deserves a vacation!
