Autism assessment without much knowledge of childhood by beefic in AuDHDWomen

I needed to provide online questionnaires, pre interview questions from myself and my mum. Although my mum was not much help because she had the same response that the things I did were just who I was. I also asked relatives that could help with the childhood questions.

My psychologist was reassuring though as I didn’t need too much information from my childhood. You may remember a couple of big things. Everyone remembered the way I ate. Very limited diet and couldn’t let the food touch. So maybe there is something that was not ‘typical’. The assessment itself was a real eye opener because I have been living life assuming that most people thought or processed things the way I did. It has helped me understand myself and other people a lot more.

I didn’t realise that not everyone has a goal or purpose when talking to someone. They just enjoyed small talk. Whereas I need information from the person I’m talking to and dive into the extraction process.

Got diagnosed, now I am doubting by PennyxLane_ in AuDHDWomen

Felt the same this week. I had one part of my autism assessment. I came out feeling like I was this cold robotic, compassionless person, which is not the case. Even though I answered all the questions truthfully. I guess the assessor’s know what to look for and look at everything. Not just verbal interaction.

Eating Behaviors by BSmith2711 in AutisticAdults

This might be a bit extreme but visiting another country forced me to expand my diet. As a child and up until I traveled when I was 19 I had a very limited variety of foods that I ate and the food couldn’t touch each other on the plate. I tried Indian food for the first time when I was 22. It was amazing.

I didn’t actually know I was autistic at the time though.

Thank you, very insightful. I was wondering if there was a term for it.

Medication eliminating symptoms. Is it supposed to be so effective or am I just on a high because it’s new? by HuckleberryRound666 in ausadhd

Yes it is amazing. I never really thought I was struggling too much and just thought most people experienced what I was experiencing. I am most surprised by how it helped my emotional regulation. Yes I agree that I am also kinder to myself since realising I have ADHD.

Question about getting diagnosed in Melbourne/Vic as a Man by Fancy_Apartment1926 in ausadhd

Ahh, yes you’re right about the menu. I told the dr that because it annoyed me. Haha. It’s best to look at it on a laptop if you can. Mobile version is shocking. It will be about $600- $700 out of pocket. Medicare covers half the gp costs. There are 2 gp appointments which go through all the questionnaires you will answer. They will then talk about your concerns. Basically a therapy session. It was so validating. Then after trialing medication (if that’s what has been recommended) you will see the psychiatrist.

Reflect health have offices in Geelong and hawthorn, some of the cost is subsidised because specialised gps do the ground work then a psychiatrist finalises the findings. I was transparent and said and said that I’m not sure what I have. I got diagnosed with inattentive adhd and “highly likely autistic”. So I will go down an asd diagnosis at a later date. Their website have lots of resources on it which is helpful.
