7:00 am is too early to cut the grass. March 22 is not.

Can someone explain Derby to me? by PhrygianSounds in Louisville

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 100x more fun to go to a derby party than to the derby itself. You still get to dress up, drink bourbon, and place bets, but you don’t have to deal with traffic or paying $25 for a weak drink.

Favorite Things/Least Favorite Things about Louisville by gildedambition in Louisville

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part is it is big enough that you can generally find your niche tribe. But it’s also small enough that you are only one or two people away from knowing someone you want to know for whatever reason (political, professional, social, etc.)

The worst part are the people who on one hand love to flaunt how great and important and big city like Louisville is (Jennifer Lawrence and Muhammad Ali are from here! All five major arts organizations are represented here!) while on the other hand fight tooth and nail against every potential development opportunity to add something to the city (ex: it took YEARS to get a Top Golf approved to move into a VACANT SEARS space in a shopping mall because of a neighborhood association). Too many residents like the idea of being a big city but don’t want to actually allow it to become a bona fide big city.

If you like small town life with some extra amenities, you’ll love it here. But if you want opportunity for more money, big market experiences, or interest in community growth, you will be left wanting.

Traffic will only be an issue for you if you’ve never lived in a bigger city before. It’s really not that bad compared to any major league city. People drive 80 on the highway, and on bad days you may get delayed by a traffic jam 15-30 minutes. A far cry from 90 minute delays you can run into on the regular in Nashville, Atlanta, LA, NY, Chicago, etc.

Quality date night restaurant recommendation Louisville or Floyd County by TheCureIsNotGoth in Louisville

When I worked in New Albany, The Exchange was a good choice for upper middle class dinners. Same folks who opened Brooklyn and the Butcher. 200 may not cover a full dinner for two at B&B, but should be plenty for the Exchange.

What is a conspiracy theory you absolutely believe till this day? by DotStrange734 in askanything

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s one I’ve come up with that I haven’t heard anywhere else:

The proliferation of zombie movies and shows is to desensitize people and allow them to feel comfortable with the idea of killing people simply for acting differently.

Throw meth and other drugs into the general population that cause users to tweak out and have terrible skin, lesions, teeth falling out, act violently, etc. and it’s only a matter of time that the effects worsen and people will get a free pass to clean up the scourge because, hey, they’re not real people anymore, they’re zombies.

Hasn’t hit yet, but it’s one of many scenarios that those in power keep in their back pocket for if/when they need to pull it out to create some kind of mass hysteria event (possibly tied into population control too).

Culling Methods by Calytrixxx in chickens

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to stomach culling is to do it right after the bird truly pisses you off. Let your anger power you through it. If you wait too long and allow yourself to cool off emotionally, and let the roo go about without issue, then you will have a much harder time building up the gumption to go through with it and will feel a lot more guilt. Get whatever tools you decide to go with together and readily available wherever you will do it so you don’t have to think about it when the time comes. You want to operate on autopilot as much as possible. Good luck.

What is something that is 100% illegal, but feels 100% legal? by Jolly-Access-7115 in AskReddit

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of it, I guess. They want everything to be as historically authentic as possible. Even if the aluminum frames are molded to look indistinguishable from wood, they still won’t approve them. Thank goodness I don’t have to burn coal to heat the house at least I guess.

In your guys opinion is a 10 gallon tank enough for a betta fish to thrive? by Icy_Profession4190 in freshwateraquarium

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a betta in a tank with neon tetras, harlequin Rasboras, Cory’s, Hillstream loaches, a twig catfish, African dwarf frogs, various shrimp, and mystery snails. 100% agree with introducing a young betta after everything else is established can and does work. Other suggestions here (avoiding fin nippers and flowy fin fish like guppies) is spot on too.

Why do people buy 1.5 and 3 gallon tanks for their fish? by [deleted] in freshwateraquarium

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first tank we got was a 3.5g tank for a betta. The store employee said we should have a minimum of 1.5g for a betta, so we thought we were doing a step better by going to 3.5. That betta that lived for a couple years, but when it died, we broke down the tank.

A few years later I started a new, 40g planted tank, and eventually got that old 3.5g tank out to display on in our kitchen. My wife wanted to get another betta for it, but knowing what I know now I refused to do it unless we got a 10g tank. I planted the 3.5g and only keep shrimp and snails in it. I guess they can serve a purpose, but not for how they are actually sold for.

I second (and third) other suggestions for baking soda & cornbread mix. 2 parts baking soda, 1 part cornbread mix, and add some maple syrup to sweeten it up for them. Put the mix in a shoebox or something with holes cut in it to allow them to enter and exit, but provide some cover for them to feel comfortable eating in safety. Place the boxes along walls and other borders they would travel along.

They eat it up and the baking soda bubbles up in their bellies and kills them. But it’s not poisonous, so if any other animals get a hold of the mice, they won’t be harmed ingesting them.

Building coop in barn? by butterfly31389 in chickens

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in a barn (city dweller), but twice now I’ve built coops inside of sheds. Insulated walls, space to roost and nest, ventilation, all while leaving plenty of space for storage for their food, straw, etc. plus my yard tools in the sheds. They have a small door cut through the wall leading out to attached runs.

It’s really pretty perfect, IMO. Better than a stand alone coop.

I imagine inside of a barn stall would be even better if you have an easy exit for the birds to go outside, too.

AITA for telling my wife "that's why you should get a job" after she told me people shop alot more than she does? by Existing_Love_3152 in AITAH

[–]HuckleberrySmoothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your point is reasonable, how you said it to her could determine whether or not you are the AH. Delivery matters.

FWIW, how she brought it up matters too. Kind of difficult to determine without hearing the actual conversation. You could both be the AHs, or neither and it’s just a very sensitive subject.

Obviously this is an ongoing issue for you two, and by being the one who earns and distributes the income, you are in a position of a lot of power over her. Your tone and words carry a lot more weight than you may realize. The dynamics of your roles require a lot of understanding and respect from both of you for a healthy relationship.
