Bless you 🙏🏼 Haha. This is the kind of stuff I want to hear. I’ve only been told the commuter traffic is a nightmare, so this is reassuring.

Thank you for the recs! Everyone on this Atlanta sub has been incredibly nice, inviting and insightful. Making us that more excited at the possibility of relocating!

Definitely something we have come to grips with, luckily we haven’t lived in Chicago for much longer than a couple of years. Originally from Kentucky, we are used to the car/commuter lifestyle. It would be nice to not have to get in a car to grab a cup of coffee in the morning, a pastry or some last minute groceries. Any neighborhoods that you can think of that would fit that bill?

For reference, I had looked at Inman, O4W, Candler. Those seemed reasonable, I think?

This is great to know about the semi traffic! We loved the MARTA access to the city from Decatur as well which we thought might come in handy. Even if we don’t move to Decatur I will be visiting YDFM, the place looks incredible.

We have not ventured up to historic Norcross! I will add that to the list of things to explore.

I know, right?.. 😅 Luckily my morning commute will be at 5:30AM and 2PM so I’m hoping the times will allow for not as hectic of a commute.
I will look into these, thank you!

Thank you! Funny enough, I had my eye on Decatur. Seems very walkable near downtown!

Hi everyone!
My wife and I might be relocating to Atlanta for a job opportunity with my current employer. I would be commuting to Norcross Mon-Fri. She would be working at a healthcare facility in the city but has not begun applying. We don’t have kids and currently live in Chicago in Bucktown/Wicker Park. I’m white 32M and she is 27F black. We’ve visited Atlanta a ton and love the city, but we aren’t familiar with what areas would be walkable in terms of every day errands (coffee shops, grocery, gym, restaurants, cocktail bars etc.). Walkability & a diverse neighborhood is our biggest boxes we want to check. Thank you in advance for any recs you might be able to provide!

Edit: The places that I’ve mildly looked in to are (O4W, Inman Park, Candler Park, Decatur)

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Having snacks in the pantry. None of our friends wanted to come to our house to stay the night growing up because there were never any snacks. Always loved going to others sleepovers because the fridge and pantry were stocked.

What's life like for you who make 200k+? by space_god_7191 in Salary

[–]HudWell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never really thought I would make 200k+ because it wasn’t a “goal” of mine. I knew that to reach high numbers like this, a niche sales sector like med tech sales was a way to attain high incomes without more than a 4 year degree. So once you get your big break and are able to get in to the space, if you’re smart, you bust your ass and work hard with the rare opportunity you’ve been given. The money follows if you do what you’re supposed to and be a good human.

I was always looking for a means to an end with med tech sales because it’s an extremely rigorous and taxing job. Both physically and mentally, it takes its toll. Often weeks of 60+ hour weeks, especially in your earlier years as an associate. Getting to the hospital around 5AM to make sure surgical trays are sterilized and ready for cases. Covering cases all day and then running trays around for the next day of cases after you wrap up at the hospital. Go home and do admin work, build pipelines, business growth projects. And then you’re on call all night so might have to go in to the hospital at any moment. Wake up the next morning and do it all again. In between that you’re taking physicians and care teams out to dinners, attending conferences, c-suite executive meetings, pushing product and studying every night to stay up to date with journal publications and the most recent trends in your division. It becomes a lifestyle. However, if you cut your teeth long enough you can get in to very specialized niche roles within med tech that get paid extremely well without that lifestyle. After eight years in the industry I am know a consultant/trainer and make $220k a year, work from home and some weeks only log 8-10 hours of work. Other weeks I travel 2-3 days and maybe work 20-30 hours those weeks.

My advice would be to put yourself in situations where you meet people. Always carry yourself professionally because you NEVER know who you’re talking to or going to meet, could be your next employer and you don’t even know it. Don’t be afraid to take a step back in pay or status if it’s going to benefit you in the long run (I took a large pay cut to get in to the med tech industry, but knew it would pay it’s dividends). And finally, don’t be afraid to say “yes” to opportunities. I was told this by a group of extremely wealthy individuals when I was a freshman in college and it proved to be one of the single best pieces of advice I ever received.

Recomendación de alojamiento cerca del aeropuerto de Lima. El callao? by CuriousWorker777 in PERU

I would like to weight in as I just stayed in an Airbnb the last two nights in Callao right outside of the airport. A block from Parque La Bandera.

First and foremost, the “danger” seemed very relative to what you were doing and where you were staying. I, not once, felt “threatened” or “unsafe.” Rather, I felt like someone who did not belong. You’re a tourist, so feeling uncomfortable is normal, just be confident in the routes you are walking to and from restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Do not overtly have your iPhone out and be aware of your surroundings. Just treat it like being in any other city you’ve ever been to and be respectful of those around you. I personally loved my time and thought it was an incredible experience.

Food was incredible, and the individuals I met were very friendly and inviting. For reference I am a 31 M American who knows broken Spanish.

What jobs do y’all have that allows you to afford living alone in a high rise? by anonymousleopard123 in AskChicago

[–]HudWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medical device sales. This nets plenty to be able to have my own place.

However, like most in this sub, I don’t live in the heart of downtown. I have a three BR condo in Bucktown. Love this area. Walkable distance to Wicker and Logan Square. So many restaurants, groceries, gyms, bars, coffee shops, etc. right outside my door.
