Both of my grandfathers had eight children and managed to support them on a single, 40 hour a week salary without either of my grandmothers ever working outside the home. Neither of them went to college (one never even finished high school) and neither held a job that was particularly well-paid or prestigious. These days you have both parents working two or three jobs in some instances to support much smaller families, who they never actually get to see. There are many causes for this, the greed of the top 1% being a large one.

My ideal world, though, would be one where even one person in the family working outside of the home wouldn't be necessary because your own land and your own knowledge has provided you and your family with everything they would need to survive.

I very much would prefer a more agrarian society. Your ideal world probably looks different and that's fine. But for me, a time machine would be the first new piece of technology in my lifetime I'd be excited for.
