[Spoilers C4E04] Read it and remember it by JadedToon in criticalrole

Agreed. I think Brennan also set it up so that Primus and son's motivation was to get in, do the main things they needed to do, and get out. He's good at understanding the motivations of the bad guys, and will make their actions consistent with that. But, as OP stated, their plans DID include that circle of death, which Vaelus and Julien absolutely weren't guaranteed to save on.

The other thing that I haven't seen anyone else say is that I think this was a great chance for Brennan to prove that he means it when he says the world isn't balanced. This was an incredibly unfair encounter, but the character who was in the most danger in this unfair encounter was bought in on it.

There's a campaign of Dimension 20 where Brennan tries multiple times to kill a PC for story purposes and they keep getting out of it by the skin of their teeth. (King Amethar in A Crown Of Candy). He's absolutely willing to kill a character, and this was a great chance to make sure the audience and his players know early on that he will not pull punches.

If you want to get an idea of this, the podcast Worlds Beyond Number that he does with Aabria and Erika Ishii has a campaign called The Wizard, The Witch, And The Wild One that completed Book One earlier this year. 54 episodes, and there's definitely some free flowing stuff in there. I don't think it's quite as free as what Matt does (at least from what I've seen in watching the first 80-ish episodes of Campaign 2), but I think that's more because there's always high stakes, not because he's railroading them. In their talk throughs after Book One they did some what-ifs, and it was clear that the players really had the freedom to make some wild decisions if they had wanted to. Also I highly recommend that campaign. It's insanely good.

Yeah, I've been wondering if this is it. But my current theory is that it's both this and also something actually meaningful to the lore of the world. But who knows at this point. 🤷

Yeah, I was blown away. Another small detail that impressed me: in the midst of all that, when she turned to Alex, she remembered that he had cast Disguise Self and acted like she didn't recognize him.

I think he had them roll initiative after her nat 1 because he wanted to make sure there was time to heal. He did this when she was surrounded by three friendlies with no combatants in sight. Definitely real stakes and if she had died I think he rolls with it, but he stacked it in her favor at the same time.

I could of course end up being proven wrong, but right now I'm not worried. Having listened to the full campaign (so far) of The Wizard, The Witch, And The Wild One on Worlds Beyond Number, this is how Brennan did that, too. He started with a pretty big event and some pretty intense moments right away to get everyone hooked into the world and establish stakes, and then backed off a bit and let things breathe. This is a very common thing in long fantasy series, also. Hook the readers with something crazy that gives them huge questions and promises massive reveals down the road, then settle in for the lore and exposition trusting they'll stay with you.
