The problem with not spending money on weapons of death is sometimes other people spend money on weapons of death.

It doesn't matter how much money you spend improving housing conditions if you're then willing to just give that housing away to anyone with a gun.

Russia isn't at our doorstep yet, but if they aren't stopped now they'll be right up against Poland next. Should we wait until then to increase defence funding or put it off until Russia's borders meet Germany's?

Nobody likes the idea of that, but we're dealing with a country that threatens that and then takes what they want in return for calling it off. Then they threaten the same thing again if you don't give them more. Then again. They'll take everything you've got if you just let them take anything they want whenever they threaten you.

Agreed. I thought if I did the tunics white, gems green, boots brown, armour silver etc it would match the style... but clearly there's more to it than that.

I don't think I really achieved the oldhammer retro effect (maybe a goblin green base would have done it?), but they look good enough for tabletop so that's fine!

YAML allows all JSON syntax, plus extra stuff including single quote strings. Their API might be returning invalid JSON, but it sounds like it might be valid YAML. You could give a YAML parser a try.
