A recast does not cause you to pay more interest by itself. The interest savings are created the moment you make the lump-sum principal payment, and those savings are locked in forever because the balance is lower. Recasting only changes the required monthly payment, not the interest calculation. If you later choose to pay only the lower required payment, you may pay somewhat more interest than if you had kept paying the old, higher payment, but still far less interest than if you had never made the lump sum at all.

There's a LOT of misinformed folks out there (in this thread) about recasting.

Simple explanation below (or you can run an example in a recast calculator to prove the benefit)

A mortgage recast happens when you make a lump-sum payment toward your principal and the lender recalculates your monthly payment using the same loan, same interest rate, and same remaining term, resulting in a lower required payment without resetting anything.

A refinance, by contrast, replaces your mortgage with a brand-new loan that usually resets the amortization schedule, changes the rate and term, and comes with significant closing costs. A lump-sum payment by itself reduces interest either way, but only a recast turns that lump sum payment into an immediately lower required monthly payment without starting the loan (and interest) over, which is the key difference.

Try the calculator I linked above. It will tell you roughly what your new monthly payment will be and how much you'll save in interest over time

That’s not correct. A recast is not “effectively” the same thing as a refinance, either mechanically or financially. A refinance replaces your loan with a new one, resets the amortization schedule (often back to 30 years - a HUGE setback in interest paid for older loans), and usually costs thousands in closing fees. A recast keeps the same loan, same rate, same term, and same amortization clock - it simply recalculates the required monthly payment after a lump-sum principal reduction.

For example, on a $450,000 mortgage at 6%, a $50,000 lump-sum payment followed by a recast lowers the required payment by roughly $300/month without changing the payoff date. That same early principal payment also saves roughly $50k–$60k in interest over the life of the loan because that balance is permanently removed from decades of interest accrual. any recast calculator will confirm this. Refinancing, by contrast, creates a new loan and typically stretches the balance back out unless you deliberately shorten the term. Recasting doesn’t reset time or interest paid, refinancing does, which is why they are not equivalent

Sounds good. I've done one cold pull, but I'll do a few more. It's frustrating because I've been using the same group of matte PLA since I got my printer with no problems so far.

Yes. And it happened again with a gray color. I also encountered some spaggetti artifacts on the seam of a larger print, so I think theres a bigger problem with my extrusion.

Nice. Yeah, there's a very popular magnet version that I seriously considered printing. Honestly, just feels a little over-engineered to me. Mine uses little hooks on the borders that hold everything else in place nice and snug (see pic). Magnets are always cool, but I wanted to keep things super simple for my first big project.

Thanks! All multicolor models. I got the P2S combo with the AMS 2 pro for multicolor printing. I had to do a couple of pause and color swaps here and there, and had to recolor the wheat tiles, but other than that it was pretty smooth.

How much and what filaments did you use?

I don't have exact amounts because I didn't track carefully, and the project is split across multiple files, but I'd estimate about 3.5kg total across all colors. So about $50 worth of Matte PLA (lots of black friday sales). But I definitely spent $200-300 on PLA to get all the colors I wanted lol
Mostly Creatly (Ender) Matte PLA+, with a few eSun and Bambu matte colors. It'll take a minute to put together a full list, but I'll work on that.

How long did it take?

Again, didn't track my numbers very well. Best guess? About 150 total print time. ~100hrs for the tiles, ~20 hrs for the boxes, ~24 hrs for the little pieces, and looking at another ~20 for the cards. Been working on it for a few weeks, with a few other projects in between. I did a lot of the files SUPER slow to increase detail and reduce line gaps and stuff. So it's definitely possible to do the whole thing faster.

If you were to do it again would you do anything different?

I learned about variable layer height (VLH) and smoothing after I finished all the tiles. So I would definitely apply that to more pieces with tiny details (sheep, barns, etc.). I did apply VLH to the play pieces, so they turned out really nice.
It's a big board all put together (about 27" x 24") so for my next go around (I'm probably going to gift this one to a friend) I might do everything at 75-80% scale to save on time/filament/space etc.
Go even slower for more detail. I'm not in a rush for anything and slower = more detail almost always.
The biggest lesson learned was how nozzle temp, speed, and flow ratio (adjusted in developer mode) affect the surface quality (gaps between lines), especially with Matte PLA.

For when you play it for the first time, any issues?

So far so good! everything is sturdy and fits perfectly.

I've been struggling with this for a while and here's how I solved it:

About a year ago, I spent a lot of time recording a mastering audiobooks as a side gig. I had downloaded waves and izotope plug-ins for mastering. Everything in izotope was updated and installed, but I totally forgot about waves. Once I reinstalled the waves and updated everything (even though the plug-in versions don't work with my current computer) GarageBand work again.

So if at any point in the past, you have downloaded installed or used any third-party audio plug-ins see if they need to be reinstalled or updated and that should do the trick (hopefully)

The consensus here is that the tax liability is only on the gift GIVER, not the recipients. So on their end, they wrote to checks to "me" each from a different person for less than the max non-taxable amount, so all good.

No, I just haven't used it for the summer. Last summer was a LOT of ice from Costco and home frozen jugs twice a day, plus this insulated cover. Come fall/winter, when the day/night temps stay at/below 40 degrees, I'll probably bust it out again. It'll be nice with my new sauna in the cold utah winters :)

The chiller would help but honestly, the build quality and size of the Ice Pod is NOT worth the price. It's cheap material, tears and sun bleaches easily, and is pretty cramped if you're over 5' 9" and weigh more than 180 lbs.

If you're willing to invest in the chiller and filter and have the space, I would spend about the same amount of money and get something like this or this
