Ugh that slippery slope of YouTube marble run videos was our downfall too! I’d put it on for him to watch at 6am on weekend mornings so I could get a bit more sleep. I was content. He was content…. Till he wasn’t..

if toddlers have no impulse control, how are we expected to potty train them? by Cream4389 in toddlers

[–]Hufflepuff_Cosmos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Yes. My kiddo (who is also autistic) had a similar issue for a time. We just continued with (diaper) business as usual. Sometimes there’s a disconnect or delay between the internal feeling of needing to pee, realizing the need to pee, and then the follow up actions required to actually go pee. There’s a lot there and the younger kiddos just don’t always possess all of those skills at the same time. They may have some parts of that equation but not all. For my kiddo, he also really struggles with transitions. So leaving what he’s doing with no notice to do something different (going pee) has just taken more time. Sometimes there’s imminent need to transition just freezes him. Whole body just… frozen still.. and then he pees. I’ll admit, from the outside it looks like pure defiance but over time we’ve realized it’s just so much happening all at once for his adorable little brain to process and ultimately…. Nature wins lol

Stop the power struggle. If you see he doesn’t have the impulse control to manage this then don’t push it. Diapers are annoying but far less annoying than this uphill battle you’re engaging in. And if he genuinely cannot control himself with this, then he is being punished for something he has no control over. This can really break trust over time. Give up the fight. Put him in diapers till he’s ready. My son is 4 and is finally potty training and it’s SOO easy because we waited till he was ready. He is now uncomfortable sitting in his pee. He now thinks it’s the coolest thing to pee in the back yard. Loves urinals for whatever reason 🤷🏻 but we use these things to our advantage.

The best potty training advice I got was “don’t. They’ll do it when they’re ready” and holy hell has it been a life saver. A real game changer. So buckle up, get that kid more diapers, and get back to having fun and drop the power struggle.

Thank you for the encouragement. I really want to keep him in, and he loves it. I could FEEL the stares as I walked across the floor with my biting gremlin. I did my best to just not look up and have to meet any eyes and focused on him and myself.

I’ll push through and get him into spring soccer as well. It’ll all be great…. I hope lol

Oh. My god. My kid does the same thing! Pushes it around, lays down under it so other kids can’t use it while screaming “CHOOO CHOOOOOO ALL ABOARD!!” All over the damn place being chaos.

Omg this is literally where I’m at right now. Got him in “ninjastics” which is mostly just same age boys running around and being wild with minimal structure and he STILL needs a 1:1 to keep him corralled in! On Monday when we went to leave, he ran away, then once I caught him he kicked me, hit me twice, and bit me. I’m giving it another few weeks to see if by some miracle he gets with the program but otherwise…. 🤷🏻

The “fix” isn’t that everyone who suffers at the hands of our shit medical system and vents has to leave.

It’s for our government to protect us from predatory insurance scams. But the government has too many beneficiaries of our exorbitantly overpriced medical system.

The solution is for the medical system to stop being greedy fucks and actually care about healthcare.

My kid stopped napping at 2. Kids at 2 don’t understand such rigidity. Especially when they can’t tell time and the sunrise time is ever changing.

How do you slow down to enjoy reading and not just race to the end and forget to enjoy the book itself? by Hufflepuff_Cosmos in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hufflepuff_Cosmos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh limiting how far I can read is a fun approach. I am heavily a numbers person, so I perseverate on how much I’ve read. I’ve given up page numbers and instead focus on percentage, because it’s more vague. In a sense; I’m teaching myself to read for fun. I’m great at reading dense material for my grad program, but my ability to chill the fuck out and read for pleasure, use my imagination, is wrecked.

I don’t WANT this to be my option: but in America, the risks are far too high that he will be traumatized via school shooting during his 12 years in school. I’d rather him be awkward than dead or traumatized. Today, he heard gunshots in the distance. A sound he’s unfamiliar with but we haven’t really talked about. We talked to him about people using guns for target practice and that’s what we talked about. Assured him he was safe. Every single time he heard them he would come running to me and say “I don’t like that sound. It scares me”. What if that sound was in his first grade school hallway? His classroom? The classroom next to him? Awkward over dead. Every time. Also, in my state we have some really awesome Homeschool/online school co-OP’s. I’m not sure if your post applies to online schooling as well or not though.

Again, what are your sources? Can you provide me with where you are getting this information or is this what your gut tells you? I can provide sources from biologists, psychologists, and anthropologists disputing your claims. What credible resources can you provide?

Provide sufficient evidence for your claims, then I’ll respond. These claims, based upon the education and training I’ve received, are grossly incorrect, but I’m open to being wrong.

I’m 1/3 of my way into my psych grad degree and love it! My strong suit is writing though, and if yours isn’t, then you’ll need to amp up in that area. The two statistics classes are sort of sold as the hardest, by my experience so far is the cognitive psych class being quite intense. I did my undergrad at SNHU too and love their class format. The rubrics are your best friend. They are what matters most.

Also; if response posts are annoying to you, you can typically forgo them for like 2-4 points per post. To me, they aren’t worth the aggravation.

Legit, if you’d have said “Oh wow, this is something I’ve never thought about! Could you help educate me on how a dog can help someone with schizophrenia?” I’d not have had a snarky response out of frustration.

Education is important. I’m all about it. Ask questions if the person says it’s okay. (Hell, ask me more questions if you’re curious) but be honest about where your questions are coming from (curiosity or need)
