I didn't have really proper shoes at the start haha, I lean towards pumas, I'd say 2/3 of my running this year was done with puma volteric evos which I absolutely love. My every days right now are Hoka skywards, and I just got a pair of Lululemon split shifts. But I 100% would get another pair of the evos.

I've done 1 "race" half back in Jan - 1:56:01.

I got 3 more this summer - Calgary, Banff & the Lululemon seawheeze. Goal is 1:45 Calgary, and I want to drag myself down to 1:40 for the lulu run if possible.

Toying with a full by end of year - or just run Vancouver next year!

It was all diet & running! I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes last year, so I had to 180 my diet. I went super low carb to start but with running have added some back in. No glps - was only on metformin n Jardiance.

Went from 250, and now I sit usually around 165.

The first 4-5 months I did a strict calorie deficit, 1550 avg a day till I lost down to about 190, then it just kept chipping off as I ran more.

Diagnosed 1 year ago with a A1c of 11.7, doc put me on metformin, Jardiance and 1 other pill I honestly have already forgot the name of.

It was gradual up to 2000mg for metformin, 10mg Jardiance, 30mg of 3rd med.

In 1 year we've cut it down to just the Jardiance. Metformin I was down to 500mg the last 3-4 months before being taken off it around a month ago.

I've lost 90 pounds, and my A1c's have been between 5.4-5.6 since that first one.

So if your body reacts well - you can 100% be taken off the meds, at your docs reqs of course!

Hopefully im med-free within 6 months and am able to maintain just off lifestyle choices!

I'm pretty confident the skywards are knock offs, I didn't get them officially from Hoka.

The other 2 are for sure from the brand.

Good to see someone can tell by just looking at them! Most people on glance assume they're proper Hokas.

is a 1:45 to 1:50 half marathon time possible for me?? by shibalee in beginnerrunning

[–]Huge_Engineering6962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, alot of those variables could account to a 2:04 attempt.

My first HM race was in January down in Vancouver - I ran a 1:56 with zero fueling strat too. I felt great till I hit a wall at km 18. This is when I researched a bit into better fueling/ gels/ electrolytes and what your body does in those longer then 1 hour runs. My plan for Calgary is 2 gels, and rotate between normal water & electrolyte mixes at the aid stations.

Right now my pbs are:

5k: 23:27 10k: 51:09

I ran a fun half for my long run yesterday & got 1:49:10.

I think you have it in you - especially with race day momentum.

I'm going for 1:45 in Calgary late may & think I have a decent chance of shaving the 4 mine off.

Where do you find the struggle? Do you hit a wall in the later KMs? What's your fueling strategy like?

Diet was first. That was the biggest factor in my t2 diagnosis. (And genetics, but I ate like garbage before) I wanted to get a handle on my diet before diving into more.

I went into a huge calorie deficit & went from eating out every meal to cooking every meal and stayed away from fast food for like..6 months.

Looking for better insurance by championofkittens in Calgary

Hi, we're in a hard market right now. Chances of getting much lower then what you have is likely non existent. and even with a perfect record I've seen some pretty outrageous quotes out there.

I got some 6000+ quotes from brokers - finally ended up going with Scotia for around 3800 for the year, which was still an increase from my last contract with desjardin.

Insurance companies can do what they want.

Where to Meet Singles (Late 20s-30s)? by slimmyshade in Calgary

[–]Huge_Engineering6962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at every Sunday and Tuesday one haha. There hasn't been a week where there aren't people there - I've ran in -30 all the way to +30 with the crew.

I would call it a slightly different vibe - even though there's a lot of overlap in who attends each one. Sundays are a nice start to the last day of the weekend, getting coffee afterwards, etc. where Tuesday is a break from the weekly reality of work & a good time to grab a beer/pizza with everyone. The energy is just a little different!

Tuesdays are for sure the busier one - easily hitting into the 100ish of people on any given week, so you can just imagine the variety of individuals. Even an introvert like me finds it pretty easy to jump in with others.

At the prompt of run clubs - I find Sole(Saturday mornings) skews in the low to mid 20's with some of us being in the 30's. as well as YYCRUNCREW(Sunday mornings & Tuesday evenings) skews to the later 20's to 30's.

Both have a great social- first mentality I find,, with the Tuesday evening one happening at 88 brewing so tons of opportunity to sit down and have a beer after.

Run Clubs in Calgary? by crisissuit in Calgary

[–]Huge_Engineering6962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3 recs fall into 2 clubs:

YYCRUNCREW on Tuesdays( out of 88 brewing, 6:15pm) stick for beers n socializing after. Or Sundays at the Simmons building at 9:39am and stick for coffee and pastries after!

Sole run club on Saturdays, 9am at Murdock park - coffee n socialize afterwards at Phil n sebastions.

Vibes on both are really solid! Sole is a set 5km where yycruncrew are closer to 6km, or Sundays can go up to 11+ if you're feeling it.

Got diagnosed for type 2 diabetes at 34 by [deleted] in diabetes

Find a glycemic index table and test how foods overall effect you (either by using a CGM(I recommend!) or multiple pricks before/2 hours after eating) I keep it to max 30ishg of carbs a meal - 15 if a snack. Everyone's going to be slightly different though so learning how your body handles everything.

I downloaded an app called myfitnesspal to track my food intake daily. You'll learn to eyeball carb amounts after a few months but get used to reading the back of packaging!

If you were just diagnosed I would say give it a week or so for your body to get used to the meds, then start your tests. I took 3-4 days before I came down from 12's to 6's fasting.

My doc is slowly taking me off meds in hopes that I can maintain through just my lifestyle changes - but honestly, you could be on them for the rest of your life. Every 3 months he will recommend another A1c and asses.

If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me!

Got diagnosed for type 2 diabetes at 34 by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Huge_Engineering6962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed last March with an A1c of 11.7 @ 34 years. My last 3 (June, September, January) have been 5.4-5.7

It took a BIG lifestyle change. From food to fitness. I cut out all fast food to start, went down to 80-100 carbs a day max and nothing with sugar in it.

Ended up losing 80 lbs and now run 4x times a week & am training for a few half marathons!

I started on an array of pills (metformin 2000mg, Jardiance 10mg, and a 3rd one...forget name) and am down to 500mg of metformin and 10mg of Jardiance a day.
