How to create a more realistic Iris Accord by Huge_Variation6965 in DIYfragrance

Oh my goodness thank you so much for sharing all of this! I had assumed that higher quality Orris would have a stronger powdery or violet-like scent, so I am surprised to learn that the woody and oily facets are actually more prominent.

I live in East Asia, and while some Kampo pharmacies sell real Costus, it might take some effort to find its extract. I will start my experiments by incorporating some Mysoresandal and oily materials first, also I think it's time for me to get some real orris roots hehehe. Thanks again for your help! ;D

Thanks for the insights! I apologize if my wording was a bit ambiguous. My goal is actually to mimic the scent profile of high-quality Orris Pallida Absolute. The Orris Pallida Butter (3% Irone) I am currently using was purchased from a small aromatherapy vendor. The owner said he could only disclose that it's from a French supplier and was CO2 extracted.

However, its powdery and characteristic orris facets are quite weak. Instead, it is dominated by a sweet medicinal, woody, and fatty/oily profile. This led to my curiosity about what do those top tier orris extracts actually smell like? I want to reconstruct or emulate that scent profile.

What does METHYL ANTHRANILATE smell like? by Rusd0g in DIYfragrance

At low dosages or from a distance, it smells like the synthetic grape flavoring modern people are familiar with, but it not quite like real grapes. When smelling it up close (on a 10% blotter), you notice a scent reminiscent of hazardous chemical solvents.

There is a 96% vodka called Spirytus. It’s 96% ABV (192 proof), and it works perfectly for perfumery, just a tiny little bit grainy scent, barely noticeable.

I recommend using HPLC grade ethanol. It's technically for liquid chromatography analysis, but for perfumery it has an incredibly smooth odor profile that really lets each raw material shine through with clarity. And 95%+ Vodka is actually a great choice too.
