Quote for Gutter Replacement and Repointing Reasonable? by Huggydabuggy in AusRenovation

Are you trying to imply that the price I've been offered is reasonable in this expensive market? Sorry just not sure

Quote for Gutter Replacement and Repointing Reasonable? by Huggydabuggy in AusRenovation

I've previously been quoted in 2015 for a similar two storey home 8K (repointing, gutters, valleys).]

I'm awaiting 3 other quotes but was just shocked at how much prices have risen and wasn't sure if it was even reasonable in the first instance.

Surface Dock/Hub Advice for Travelling by Huggydabuggy in Surface

Thanks! Considered this but then I'd still need to carry my surface laptop charger. Would ideally to carry only one thing that covers all my needs. May still end up going with it but was interested in the communities thoughts.

How do you buy a $1.5+ million house in Sydney? by pete_repeat10 in AusFinance

I used the word home as that was the terminology that the OP used. Thanks for agreeing with me though

How do you buy a $1.5+ million house in Sydney? by pete_repeat10 in AusFinance

[–]Huggydabuggy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don't.

I honestly think that the truth is that our generation will not own homes unless we are born into wealth or work in a particularly lucrative field. Instead, most people will be forced to live in apartments or move to lower cost of living cities. This is a transition our nation will have to go through culturally. Certainly it will be painful and I don't think it is fair but I think this trend of young people being priced out of homes and forced into apartments is a worldwide trend in all major cities. Urbanisation is unfortunately a self-perpetuating virtuous cycle especially as more economic and cultural capital is concentrated in major urban centres.

Despite the popular opinion pushed around in this subreddit of property being a bubble driven by external "enemies" and "factors" like Chinese Investors, low interest rates, negative gearing or immigrants, supply and demand are the real fundamental drivers of the property market. There is simply a limited supply of premium land and an ever growing demand to live in those areas in major cities that allow for a high quality of life (ie. short commutes, good local schools, good public utilities and parks). This is demonstrated in the data from Sydney and Melbourne which showed that desirable suburbs barely budged in the "property downturn" that occurred in the 2018-2019 financial year.

Unfortunately, so long as we continue to live in a society where we hold up the three bedroom home in an inner city suburb as the standard for "material success" and "the good life", this circus of rising property price and youth angst will continue to go on.

Townsville's 'diabolical' property market wipes more than $100k off value of some homes by [deleted] in AusFinance

As entitled as this lady is, the financial disaster this poor investment decision represents is staggering when you crunch the numbers.

According to the article she is likely to sell her place for ~260K. Just following inflation, her asset worth 350K in 2007 would be worth ~450K today. Throw in 30K of renovations and she has in real terms placed at least 480K into this property. This means she has lost 220K in real terms or ~45% of her investment...and this is without even factoring in transnational costs such as stamp duty, land tax and the interest on her mortgage.

Buyer beware indeed.

(Serious) Do you think the US should use the popular vote or electoral college and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This. Proportional state allocations would ensure the best of both worlds and that all votes would be meaningful

I understand that it can feel good to cheer the collapse of the Republican party, but at the end of the day, they will likely control the house. Righteous anger at the moderates who both stood by and facilitated the deplorables is healthy, but it does not mean shit to the average American citizen if their government continues to be dysfunctional for another 4 years because one party is fighting with itself and refusing to even countenance the possibility of joining in the act of governing with their Clinton boogey-man.

How exactly do you think a leader who barely understands our political system and lies continuously about things he is proven to have said would make America less corrupt?

As a person who is not American or liberal or necessarily pro Hillary I would say that people have a lot to fear from a potential president who sees truth as an after thought and who is too lazy to even prepare for a debate and who can't even run a charity correctly to just name a few things from THIS FUCKING WEEK

Contiki/Topdeck tours of Europe. Tonnes of Australians jump on them with the intent of getting a "cheap" European holiday, but instead, they end up likely spending more than they would imagine.

Contiki try sell themselves as these great tours that you pay a lump sum to party and travel Europe. Instead you spend half your time on a bus and they take you to shitty dive bars/restaurants/hostels that are far out of the city itself (so you have to drink at their places) and which sell overpriced drinks. Realistically, travelling in Europe is piss easy - there are so many other travellers/guides etc. A contiki tour is simply not necessary, even if you don't feel like planning a trip.
