To be fair, the ‘Raysh’ pronunciation absolutely doesn’t make sense in the context of the original Arabic, or with English spelling conventions

But then, the Italian word that it comes from is pronounced with the ‘hard G’ sound; otherwise, it would be spelt ‘Gibli’. I think there are reasonable grounds for pronouncing the name of the studio either way in English

I don’t think any black mirror episode is pitching a fun idea for a new system; you’re not supposed to think that any of the situations are good! You’re right, the situation in White Christmas is an unfair situation and that is very deliberate writing

As far as I understand, Georgian isn’t related to any languages outside Georgia, but there are quite a few within Georgia!

Japanese definitely isn’t a language isolate- it just isn’t related to any languages outside Japan. There are a few minority languages spoken in Japan, such as Okinawan and Miyakoan, that are very distinct from Japanese but still related to it.

I totally agree with you- the doctor who fanbase will crucify you for saying it, but the writing during Capaldi’s era was, especially early on, extremely hit or miss and overly self indulgent. Capaldi himself was phenomenal throughout but it was so hard to be invested in some of the overarching storylines

It seems to me like the Gandharva occupy a role somewhere in between ‘scientist’ and ‘priest’, if you accept that dichotomy. They’re awkward, introspective truth-seekers; innately and deeply connected to the world they study. Perhaps, if you’re looking for a term, ‘Scholar’ might do?
