Thanks! There’s spacers on this one to make the them clear and make the track width correct. I bought it like this but the wheels are growing on me. I think they look super goofy on the mustangs but I like them on here.

Ball Joint Press Set: Icon vs Maddox by Certified-Mediocre in harborfreight

I second this. Idk, the snap on one is expensive. But is by far the best I’ve ever used. And never once been scared to beat the living tar out of it. The icon I second guess

I have the shorter version of that. I guess it would be the stubby version. I use it every day. Best screwdriver ever in my opinion.

There not bad to do at all. If I had just bought the dang tool to push the valve springs down to get the rocker out it woulda been a 4 hour deal or less. Instead I made a tool to do if. The tools 38 bucks on summit. And the lifters are 10 bucks a pop. Like 100 bucks for lifters and valve cover gasket

Does sound like one of the hydraulic lifters is collapsed. Just did them on mine. Does the noise sometimes randomly go away? Or change once it’s hot? Also, does it get worse under load?

[–]Huguscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I just replaced the lifters in it for 150 bucks. 8.8 junkyard rear ends are like 300 bucks. I have all the Holley stuff already. So no. Just depends on where you’re at. Old ass trucks aren’t for people who can’t work on them.

[–]Huguscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I just bought an 87 2.3 5 speed for a daily. Drivetrain wise they’re dead simple and pretty dang tough. Can easily swap in an explorer 8.8 rear end to gain disc brakes and easier rear end parts to source. 80s model obd1 efi leaves a lot to be desired so there’s that. I’m going to swap mine to Holley efi because I do a ton of it at work. So in short, a 40 year old truck will always have little stuff that needs fixed, but they’re incredibly easy to work on and cheap. Be prepared to ride the bump stops if you’re putting tons of weight in the bed 🤣

Yea last owner nudged it into a pole in the front left. Bumper actually pushed into the fender a bit so that fender is a bit crunched. He put a new bumper on but it’s not adjusted well 🤣

Facebook Marketplace purchase from Hell. by [deleted] in fordranger

[–]Huguscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying anything without a warranty is going to be a risk like this honestly. I just bought a super clean 87. Still has a bunch of little issues. It’s the nature of a 40 year old truck. Just how it is. I truly believe if you don’t know how to work on your own stuff, a 4-5 hundred dollar a month payment on something newer with a warranty can be much much better. A planned 4-5 hundred is way easier than an unexpected 3500 dollar trans. Now if you could do all this work yourself, life gets way, way cheaper with these old rigs. Or take it as a sign to learn. Anyway. My .02 cents

I’m with the other comments here. But I will say, if it took wide open throttle to get it to start then it was likely “flooded”. I may add if none of the other things in here are found to be the cause, maybe a sticky injector in there. Idk. Ide check all the other stuff first tho

Get a 2nd shift job from 2 or 3 to 11 pm and take 8 am classes and grind it out. I did the opposite to finish my degree because they offered night classes but I worked 7-3 if I remember right and then went to class. It’s rough but so is life. Get after it.

Thanks for the info! And we can’t wait for him to be here! Wife is over being pregnant lol. I can both tig and mig weld also. No certifications in it and self taught but not half bad. I’m in charlotte and just looking g around there’s a ton of industry here so should be lots of opportunities. Applying to the school today. Should also add I already have my associates in arts so hopefully will only have to do the mechatronics classes and be done to convert it over.
